    The Semantics of Graph Programs

    Get PDF
GP (for Graph Programs) is a rule-based, nondeterministic programming language for solving graph problems at a high level of abstraction, freeing programmers from handling low-level data structures. The core of GP consists of four constructs: single-step application of a set of conditional graph-transformation rules, sequential composition, branching and iteration. We present a formal semantics for GP in the style of structural operational semantics. A special feature of our semantics is the use of finitely failing programs to define GP's powerful branching and iteration commands

PRODUÇÃO HIDROELÉCTRICA EM CENÁRIOS DE ALTERAÇÕES CLIMÁTICAS. CASO DE ESTUDO MINI-HIDRICA DO ALVITO

    Get PDF

It addresses the concept of practice discussing the balance between the collective and individual component of practices and its implications to comprehend some transformations and consolidations of mathematics teachers practice in the Portuguese contemporaneous context.FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologi

Developing statistical literacy: a design experiment approach in middle school

    Get PDF
The main objective of this poster is to present an ongoing research to enhance statistical education in middle school for further development of statistical literacy. Statistics plays a key role preparing young people to interpret and make critical evaluations about media information and to develop students’ capacities for reasoning and communication, providing them with techniques and procedures. Different views and goals for Statistics teaching, the latest ideas about statistical literacy (Batanero, 2002; Watson, 2006), and the new Portuguese Mathematics Curriculum (Ponte et al., 2007) were considered to develop a teaching experiment within a three years intervention project implemented in two classes, and the follow up by the teacher/researcher for three academic years. In the first phase (7th grade) tasks were implemented to detect potential problems in the organization and interpretation of dummy data, plan a statistical study involving real data and analyze the ability of application of statistics to everyday situations. The second phase (8th grade) included tasks aiming at studying the advancements made and examining how the statistical expertise is mobilized to other areas of knowledge and situations. The research will continue in 9th grade, implementing tasks of communication skills in probabilistic context and characterizing how students apply Stochastic reasoning to genetics and gambling situations. Preliminary results show improvements in students’ critical sense, however, statistical thinking, especially when the data relates to everyday situations, continues to have shortcomings. Statistical work with real data, proved to be fruitful taking into consideration the improvements identified in the written and oral performance of students, which meets the ideas of other researchers mentioned in the theoretical context. Results obtained in the first two years will be presented in a poster with pictures of the project phases and extracts of the implemented tasks

    Integração contínua no 5GinFIRE

With the current evolution of network connectable devices, traffic demands are becoming very high. Network operators need to ensure that they can provide new services faster but with the same quality while keeping the costs low. Given the traditional network architecture, that is not possible because the high demands require new hardware, and its substitution is costly and not flexible. By introducing the decoupling of network functions from traditional hardware, NFV is the technology that enables the step that network operators are trying to take. However, this approach also brings reliability concerns since it is mandatory to ensure that the virtual network functions (VNFs) behave as expected. 5GinFIRE is a project that aims to provide a 5G-NFV enabled experimental testbed. As this project handles multiple VNFs from the various experimenters, it is necessary to have an automated mechanism to validate VNFs. This dissertation provides a solution for the stated problem by having a system that verifies the syntax, semantics, and references of a VNF in an automated way without needing any further human interaction. As a result, a fully integrated testing platform is deployed in the 5GinFIRE infrastructure, and the results of the tests are issued in this Document.

Sex differences and correlates of poor glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes: a cross-sectional study in Brazil and Venezuela.

OBJECTIVE: Examine whether glycaemic control varies according to sex and whether the latter plays a role in modifying factors associated with inadequate glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Brazil and Venezuela. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional, nationwide survey conducted in Brazil and Venezuela from February 2006 to June 2007 to obtain information about glycaemic control and its determinants in patients with diabetes mellitus attending outpatient clinics. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level was measured by liquid chromatography, and patients with HbA1c ≥7.0% (53 mmol/mol) were considered to have inadequate glycaemic control. The association of selected variables with glycaemic control was analysed by multivariate linear regression, using HbA1c as the dependent variable. RESULTS: A total of 9418 patients with T2D were enrolled in Brazil (n=5692) and in Venezuela (n=3726). They included 6214 (66%) women and 3204 (34%) men. On average, HbA1c levels in women were 0.13 (95% CI 0.03 to 0.24; p=0.015) higher than in men, after adjusting for age, marital status, education, race, country, body mass index, duration of disease, complications, type of healthcare, adherence to diet, adherence to treatment and previous measurement of HbA1c. Sex modified the effect of some factors associated with glycaemic control in patients with T2D in our study, but had no noteworthy effect in others. CONCLUSIONS: Women with T2D had worse glycaemic control than men. Possible causes for poorer glycaemic control in women compared with men include differences in glucose homeostasis, treatment response and psychological factors. In addition, sex modified factors associated with glycaemic control, suggesting the need to develop specific treatment guidelines for men and women
