Versatile Graphene-Based Platform for Robust Nanobiohybrid Interfaces
Technologically useful and robust graphene-based interfaces for devices
require the introduction of highly selective, stable, and covalently bonded
functionalities on the graphene surface, whilst essentially retaining the
electronic properties of the pristine layer. This work demonstrates that highly
controlled, ultrahigh vacuum covalent chemical functionalization of graphene
sheets with a thiol-terminated molecule provides a robust and tunable platform
for the development of hybrid nanostructures in different environments. We
employ this facile strategy to covalently couple two representative systems of
broad interest: metal nanoparticles, via S-metal bonds, and thiol-modified DNA
aptamers, via disulfide bridges. Both systems, which have been characterized by
a multi-technique approach, remain firmly anchored to the graphene surface even
after several washing cycles. Atomic force microscopy images demonstrate that
the conjugated aptamer retains the functionality required to recognize a target
protein. This methodology opens a new route to the integration of high-quality
graphene layers into diverse technological platforms, including plasmonics,
optoelectronics, or biosensing. With respect to the latter, the viability of a
thiol-functionalized chemical vapor deposition graphene-based solution-gated
field-effect transistor array was assessed
Evolution of the threshold temperature definition of a heat wave vs. evolution of the minimum mortality temperature: a case study in Spain during the 1983–2018 period
An area of current study concerns analysis of the possible adaptation of the population to heat, based on the temporal evolution of the minimum mortality temperature (MMT). It is important to know how is the evolution of the threshold temperatures (Tthreshold) due to these temperatures provide the basis for the activation of public health prevention plans against high temperatures. The objective of this study was to analyze the temporal evolution of threshold temperatures (Tthreshold) produced in different Spanish regions during the 1983–2018 period and to compare this evolution with the evolution of MMT. The dependent variable used was the raw rate of daily mortality due to natural causes ICD X: (A00-R99) for the considered period. The independent variable was maximum daily temperature (Tmax) during the summer months registered in the reference observatory of each region. Threshold values were determined using dispersion diagrams (annual) of the prewhitened series of mortality temperatures and Tmax. Malária transfusional: relato de caso de doador assintomático infectado por Plasmodium malariae
Malaria in Brazil is endemic in the Amazon region, but autochthonous cases with low parasitaemia occur in the Atlantic Forest area of the country. According to Brazilian legislation no test is mandatory for blood donors from non-endemic areas. However if they have traveled to malaria transmission regions they are deferred for six months before they can donate. This report describes a transfusion-transmitted malaria case in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where one recipient received infected blood and developed the disease. He lived in Sao Paulo and had no previous transfusion or trips to endemic areas, including those of low endemicity, such as Atlantic Forest. Thick blood smears confirmed Plasmodiummalariae. All donors lived in Sao Paulo and one of them (Donor 045-0) showed positive hemoscopy and PCR. This asymptomatic donor had traveled to Juquia, in the Atlantic Forest area of S ao Paulo State, where sporadic cases of autochthonous malaria are described. DNA assay revealed P. malariae in the donor's (Donor 045-0) blood. Serum archives of the recipient and of all blood donors were analyzed by ELISA using both P. vivax and P. falciparum antigens, and IFAT with P. malariae. Donor 045-0's serum was P. malariae IFAT positive and the P. vivax ELISA was reactive. In addition, two out of 44 donors' archive sera were also P. vivax ELISA reactive. All sera were P. falciparum ELISA negative. This case suggests the need of reviewing donor selection criteria and deferral strategies to prevent possible cases of transfusion-transmitted malaria.No Brasil a malária é endêmica na Amazônia, porém casos autóctones com baixas parasitemias ocorrem na área costeira de Mata Atlântica. De acordo com a legislação brasileira, não são obrigatórios testes para detecção de malária em doadores de sangue de áreas não-endêmicas; entretanto são excluídos por seis meses aqueles com relato de deslocamento para áreas de transmissão. Este trabalho descreve um caso de malária transfusional ocorrido em São Paulo, Brasil, em que um paciente recebeu sangue infectado, desenvolvendo a doença. Ele residia em São Paulo e não apresentava histórico de transfusão anterior ou deslocamentos para áreas endêmicas, incluindo as de baixa endemicidade, como a Mata Atlântica. A gota espessa revelou Plasmodium malariae. Os doadores eram residentes em São Paulo e um deles (045-0) apresentou hemoscopia e PCR positivos. Este era assintomático com PCR positiva para P. malariae e viagem para Juquiá, Mata Atlântica de São Paulo, onde são descritos casos esporádicos de malária autóctone. Amostras de soro do receptor e de todos os doadores foram ensaiadas por ELISA com antígenos de P. vivax e P. falciparum e RIFI com P. malariae. O doador 045-0 apresentou RIFI positiva para P. malariae. ELISA-P. vivax foi reagente no doador infectado (045-0) e em dois dos 44 doadores. Todos os soros foram negativos com antígeno de P. falciparum. Este caso aponta a necessidade de revisão dos critérios de triagem clínico-epidemiológica para evitar casos transfusionais e também adequar as estratégias de exclusão de doadores de sangue
Strict Selection Alone of Patients Undergoing Liver Transplantation for Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma Is Associated with Improved Survival
Liver transplantation for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (hCCA) has regained
attention since the Mayo Clinic reported their favorable results with the use
of a neo-adjuvant chemoradiation protocol. However, debate remains whether the
success of the protocol should be attributed to the neo-adjuvant therapy or to
the strict selection criteria that are being applied. The aim of this study
was to investigate the value of patient selection alone on the outcome of
liver transplantation for hCCA. In this retrospective study, patients that
were transplanted for hCCA between1990 and 2010 in Europe were identified
using the European Liver Transplant Registry (ELTR). Twenty-one centers
reported 173 patients (69%) of a total of 249 patients in the ELTR. Twenty-six
patients were wrongly coded, resulting in a study group of 147 patients. We
identified 28 patients (19%) who met the strict selection criteria of the Mayo
Clinic protocol, but had not undergone neo-adjuvant chemoradiation therapy.
Five–year survival in this subgroup was 59%, which is comparable to patients
with pretreatment pathological confirmed hCCA that were transplanted after
completion of the chemoradiation protocol at the Mayo Clinic. In conclusion,
although the results should be cautiously interpreted, this study suggests
that with strict selection alone, improved survival after transplantation can
be achieved, approaching the Mayo Clinic experience
Indications and practical approach to non-invasive ventilation in acute heart failure
In acute heart failure (AHF) syndromes significant respiratory failure (RF) is essentially seen in patients with acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema (ACPE) or cardiogenic shock (CS). Non-invasive ventilation (NIV), the application of positive intrathoracic pressure through an interface, has shown to be useful in the treatment of moderate to severe RF in several scenarios. There are two main modalities of NIV: continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and pressure support ventilation (NIPSV) with positive end expiratory pressure. Appropriate equipment and experience is needed for NIPSV, whereas CPAP may be administered without a ventilator, not requiring special training. Both modalities have shown to be effective in ACPE, by a reduction of respiratory distress and the endotracheal intubation rate compared to conventional oxygen therapy, but the impact on mortality is less conclusive. Non-invasive ventilation is also indicated in patients with AHF associated to pulmonary disease and may be considered, after haemodynamic stabilization, in some patients with CS. There are no differences in the outcomes in the studies comparing both techniques, but CPAP is a simpler technique that may be preferred in low-equipped areas like the pre-hospital setting, while NIPSV may be preferable in patients with significant hypercapnia. The new modality 'high-flow nasal cannula' seems promising in cases of AHF with less severe RF. The correct selection of patients and interfaces, early application of the technique, the achievement of a good synchrony between patients and the ventilator avoiding excessive leakage, close monitoring, proactive management, and in some cases mild sedation, may warrant the success of the technique
Volume modulus inflection point inflation and the gravitino mass problem
Several models of inflection point inflation with the volume modulus as the
inflaton are investigated. Non-perturbative superpotentials containing two
gaugino condensation terms or one such term with threshold corrections are
considered. It is shown that the gravitino mass may be much smaller than the
Hubble scale during inflation if at least one of the non-perturbative terms has
a positive exponent. Higher order corrections to the Kahler potential have to
be taken into account in such models. Those corrections are used to stabilize
the potential in the axion direction in the vicinity of the inflection point.
Models with only negative exponents require uplifting and in consequence have
the supersymmetry breaking scale higher than the inflation scale. Fine-tuning
of parameters and initial conditions is analyzed in some detail for both types
of models. It is found that fine-tuning of parameters in models with heavy
gravitino is much stronger than in models with light gravitino. It is shown
that recently proposed time dependent potentials can provide a solution to the
problem of the initial conditions only in models with heavy gravitino. Such
potentials can not be used to relax fine tuning of parameters in any model
because this would lead to values of the spectral index well outside the

Power-law solutions for TeVeS
The dynamics of TeVeS in a homogeneous and isotropic universe is shown to be
equivalent to the dynamics of an interacting two-component system, consisting
of a scalar field and a "fluid", related to the matter part, with explicitly
given coupling term. Scaling solutions (solutions with a constant ratio of the
energy densities of both components) in the "Einstein frame" are found which
are exponentially expanding or contracting with no remaining freedom for
Bekenstein's function. In the "physical frame" these solutions are of the
power-law type. An equivalent General Relativity (GR) picture of the dynamics
suggests that it is the scalar field which plays the role of dark matter, while

Inflammation in metabolically healthy and metabolically abnormal adolescents: The HELENA study
On behalf of the HELENA study group.[Background and aims] Inflammation may influence the cardio-metabolic profile which relates with the risk of chronic diseases. This study aimed to assess the inflammatory status by metabolic health (MH)/body mass index (BMI) category and to assess how inflammatory markers can predict the cardio-metabolic profile in European adolescents, considering BMI. [Methods and results] A total of 659 adolescents (295 boys) from a cross-sectional European study were included. Adolescents were classified by metabolic health based on age- and sex-specific cut-off points for glucose, blood pressure, triglycerides, high density cholesterol and BMI. C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL-6), complement factors (C3, C4) and cell adhesion molecules were assessed. [Results] Metabolically abnormal (MA) adolescents had higher values of C3 (p < 0.001) and C4 (p = 0.032) compared to those metabolically healthy (MHy). C3 concentrations significantly increased with the deterioration of the metabolic health and BMI (p < 0.001). Adolescents with higher values of CRP had higher probability of being in the overweight/obese-MH group than those allocated in other categories. Finally, high C3 and C4 concentrations increased the probability of having an unfavorable metabolic/BMI status. [Conclusions] Metabolic/BMI status and inflammatory biomarkers are associated, being the CRP, C3 and C4 the most related inflammatory markers with this condition. A new approach to cosmological perturbations in f(R) models
We propose an analytic procedure that allows to determine quantitatively the
deviation in the behavior of cosmological perturbations between a given f(R)
modified gravity model and a LCDM reference model. Our method allows to study
structure formation in these models from the largest scales, of the order of
the Hubble horizon, down to scales deeply inside the Hubble radius, without
employing the so-called "quasi-static" approximation. Although we restrict our
analysis here to linear perturbations, our technique is completely general and

Curvaton Dynamics in Brane-worlds
We study the curvaton dynamics in brane-world cosmologies. Assuming that the
inflaton field survives without decay after the end of inflation, we apply the
curvaton reheating mechanism to Randall-Sundrum and to its curvature
corrections: Gauss-Bonnet, induced gravity and combined Gauss-Bonnet and
induced gravity cosmological models. In the case of chaotic inflation and
requiring suppression of possible short-wavelength generated gravitational
waves, we constraint the parameters of a successful curvaton brane-world
cosmological model. If density perturbations are also generated by the curvaton
field then, the fundamental five-dimensional mass could be much lower than the
