Impacts of Meals on Wings (MOW) Program on Volunteers\u27 Perceptions and Motives

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is a problem in the subpopulation of older adults and the elderly. The following study aimed to explore the perceptions and motives such as career benefits, impacts experienced through volunteering, skills in dietetics, comfort level with seniors, social responsibility, peer modeling, and empathy of student volunteers participating in a food recovery-meal delivery program known as Meals on Wings (MOW) on a college campus in the Southeast. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted during July 2021. Semi-structured interviews were administered over the video conference program Zoom to 10 (n=10) student volunteers who volunteered with MOW for at least one semester. Once saturation was reached, answers and self-reflections of volunteers were analyzed following the thematic analysis qualitative study design. RESULTS: Four major themes were revealed: 1) realization of food insecurity, 2) importance of group work, 3) skills relating to future dietetic practice, and 4) interaction/connection with older clients. Volunteers of MOW realized profound impacts regarding helping the needs of seniors and self-growth in future career settings. Feelings and actions including empathy, self-gratification, social responsibility, and peer modeling were recognized. CONCLUSIONS: Altruistic and career-building motivations for volunteering were realized from the results of this study. Finding out the reasons and perceptions for why students volunteer may help to acquire more students to join the world of volunteering, provide help to the community, and show that volunteering can be immersed as a part of the educational experience. The inclusion of a school-driven, food recovery-meal delivery program to help meet the needs of seniors may help to get more students to volunteer in the community

En el presente artículo tratamos de exponer el modo en que algunas premisas éticoontológicas implícitas en la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos han imposibilitado la construcción de discursos morales verdaderamente inclusivos con respecto a la discapacidad. Así, defenderemos que gran parte del reto filosófico de pensar la discapacidad debe pasar necesariamente por la revisión de algunas premisas generales que a través de su paulatina asimilación histórica han terminado por desdibujarse en el debate ético y político. Por ello, en este artículo trataremos de evidenciar las insuficiencias conceptuales tradicionales para enfrentar moralmente la realidad de la discapacidad psíquica y plantearemos a modo de hipótesis algunos presupuestos desde los cuales esperamos reconstruir una moralidad eficazmente inclusiva con aquellas personas que padecen algún tipo de discapacidadIn this paper we aim to expose how some tacitly-assumed ontological and ethical premises in The Universal Declaration of Human Rights have historically hindered the construction of moral paradigms inclusive with disability. En el presente artículo tratamos de justificar la presencia de una hermenéutica existencial en uno de los textos fundacionales de nuestra tradición: el Prólogo del Evangelio de Juan. Para ello, planteamos una interpretación crítica de las traducciones clásicas de dicho texto e intentamos defender que la escatología joánica no atiende a un emplazamiento cronológico sino a otro preferentemente espacial. The University as purpose. A Mission for our institution

This paper aims to update a finalist definition of the university taking into account its social mission. In the initial assessment, this research will consider the qualities, functions and objectives that are specific to the university and so cannot be replaced by other institutions or alternative practices in our society. Therefore, we suggest offering a functional definition for university institutions, preferably non-profit ones, that is based on their purpose. Our research will fundamentally consider data relating to the Spanish university system and will favour classical frameworks for contemporary thought to establish the institutional purpose of universities. Methodologically, we will refer to quantitative data and their sources, although this research aspires to provide a critical reflection, albeit one with an eminently practical vocation. It is, therefore, a reflection articulated from philosophy (or, more generally, from humanities) and not from the social sciences in a strict sense. The theoretical suppositions from which we will start owe a particular debt to Max Weber, Jacques Derrida and, especially, José Ortega y Gasset, although they will also dialogue with more contemporary references such as Anne Applebaum and Jonathan D. Haidt. Likewise, throughout this text, references to classical and medieval philosophy will be incorporated, which we believe can continue to claim objective validity. From these theoretical premises we will try to bring the mission of the contemporary university up to date, underlining its social and cultural implications and claiming a specific political responsibility in the promotion and custody of certain epistemic hierarchies within the framework of a plural and democratic societyEl presente artículo intenta actualizar una definición finalista de la universidad en virtud de su misión social. En su diagnóstico inicial, esta investigación se interrogará por las cualidades, funciones y objetivos que son específicos de la universidad y que, por este motivo, no pueden ser sustituidos por otras instituciones o prácticas alternativas en nuestra sociedad. Proponemos, por ello, brindar una definición funcional y de propósito para las instituciones universitarias, preferentemente aquellas que no tienen ánimo de lucro. Nuestra investigación atenderá, fundamentalmente, a los datos relativos al Sistema Universitario Español y se servirá de marcos preferentemente clásicos del pensamiento contemporáneo en el establecimiento del propósito institucional de las universidades. Metodológicamente referiremos algunos datos cuantitativos y sus fuentes, aunque este trabajo aspira a proponerse como una reflexión crítica aunque con eminente vocación práctica. Se trata, por lo tanto, de una reflexión operada desde la filosofía (o, más genéricamente, desde las humanidades) y no desde las ciencias sociales en un sentido estricto. On Passion and Desire: Confronting an Ambiguity in Aristotle’s Ethics

One of the most relevant topics in the Aristotelian moral philosophy for contemporary ethics is the reflection about emotional motivation and the link established between emotions and moral virtue. The Aristotelian vocabulary, that said, is unfortunately quite unclear as to that respect. In this paper, we will try to outline a taxonomy of the emotional lexicon in order to set up the semantic borders between desire and passions. Having established these limits, we may advance some of the most relevant features without which we would not be able to interpret correctly the Aristotelian theory of action and his conception of virtue. In order to attain this goal we will examine the motivational role of passions, the epistemological implications of desire and the occasional relation of synonymy between these notions.Uno de los asuntos de la filosofía moral de Aristóteles que tiene más relevancia para la ética contemporánea es la reflexión sobre la motivación emocional, así como sobre el vínculo que se establece entre las emociones y la excelencia moral. El vocabulario aristotélico, por decirlo de alguna manera, es desgraciadamente algo ambiguo en este punto. En este trabajo, trataremos de desarrollar una taxonomía del léxico emocional aristotélico para así poder establecer las fronteras semánticas entre deseo y pasiones. Una vez establecidos dichos límites, podremos proponer algunos de los rasgos más sobresalientes sin los cuales no sería posible interpretar correctamente la teoría aristotélica de la acción ni su concepción de la excelencia. Para conseguir dicho objetivo, examinaremos el rol motivacional de las pasiones, las implicaciones epistemológicas del deseo y la relación ocasional de sinonimia entre estas dos nociones

Estudio del impacto del uso de las turbococinas en San José Villanueva, departamento de La Libertad, El Salvador, C.A.

Las dificultades de la deforestación y las de los padecimientos respiratorios, causados por la inhalación del humo y los costos de tiempo y recursos ligados a tratarlos, tanto para los ciudadanos como para el Estado, deben solventarse de manera tecnológica, reemplazando las cocinas tradicionales de leña por las de nueva tecnología. A través del programa de desarrollo local de CARE en El Salvador, con el apoyo de la Universidad Francisco Gavidia y de Tecnologías Ecológicas Centroamericanas, S. A de C.V., se propuso la ejecución del proyecto piloto de innovación: Turbococinas y carbón social, cuyas actividades consistieron en capacitar en el uso de las turbococinas a mujeres beneficiarias de San José Villanueva. Con las turbococinas se ahorran el tener que recoger leña; son fáciles de encender, no hay q soplar, ni llenan de ceniza, gasta muy poca energía, no producen humo, la comida sabe mas rica y además, son mas higiénicas
