    How organisations generate and use customer insight

    The generation and use of customer insight in marketing decisions is poorly understood, partly due to difficulties in obtaining research access and partly because market-based learning theory views knowledge as a fixed asset. However, customer insight takes many forms, arrives at the organisation from increasingly diverse sources and requires more than mere dissemination if it is to be useful. A multiple case study approach is used to explore managerial practices for insight generation and use. Multiple informants from each of four organisations in diverse sectors were interviewed. Findings reveal the importance of value alignment and value monitoring across the insight demand chain, to complement the information processing emphasis of extant research. Within the firm, the study suggests the importance of customer insight conduct practices including insight format, the role of automation and insight shepherding, to complement the much-researched process perspective. The study provides a basis for assessing the effectiveness of insight processes by both practitioners and scholars

    Prospects And Challenges of Women's Right Against Domestic Violence Under International Law

    In addition to being a violation of human rights, domestic violence against women and girls has been seen as the most extreme example of gender inequality. Due to its widespread nature, the consequences for children, families, and communities, as well as the significant economic costs to society, it has been recognized as a violation of human rights under international law. Numerous international legal instruments were adopted and ratified to assure women’s protection from domestic violence. The study looked at domestic abuse’s status as a human rights violation under these treaties. It was found that victims of domestic violence in the family now have a chance to enforce their rights because it is recognized as a violation of their human rights. However, because these tools are not legally binding, victims find it difficult to rely on them. Therefore, we are unable to coerce state compliance. As a result, it is recommended that instruments of international law have a single standard that has the legal power and is applied to all parties who violate them on a global scale.     A field experiment on gamification of physical activity – effects on motivation and steps

    Gamification is finding growing application in the field of physical activity, promising engaging and motivating experiences that foster behavioural change. Yet, rigorous empirical work substantiating favourable claims is limited. Our study sought to find evidence for the effects resulting from gamification of physical activity on the users’ motivation, perceived usefulness, and the behavioural change in terms of step counts. We employed a four-week randomised controlled field experiment to investigate how the choice of different gamification designs affects outcomes. Participants were provided with a wearable physical activity tracker and randomly assigned to either a: 1) competitive gamified group; 2) cooperative gamified group; 3) hybrid gamified group; or 4) control group. Data gathered includes a panel dataset of step counts and self-reported data on the users’ intrinsic motivation and perceived usefulness. We found that at the end of the intervention, gamification made no difference to self-assessed intrinsic motivation or perceived usefulness compared to a non-gamified self-tracking experience. Yet, despite the lack of psychological effects, the use of gamification did result in stronger behavioural outcomes relative to the control group - in the form of increased step counts. Indeed, all groups treated with gamification recorded an increase in step counts during the intervention period. Furthermore, among the gamified treatments, it was the hybrid design that generated the largest difference in step counts (relative to the control group). The finding that gamification can stimulate a stronger behavioural outcome without stimulating a stronger psychological one merits further investigation as to the mechanisms at play.peer-reviewe

    Protocol for a randomised controlled field experiment on the effect of different gamification designs of physical activity

However, existing empirical work has insufficiently scrutinised whether the reported positive outcomes emerge because of gamification and what type of gamification design leads to optimal results. This protocol for a parallel four-arm randomised controlled field experiment was purposely designed to investigate the effect of different gamification designs on motivation, perceived usefulness, and the intended behavioural change in physical activity (increase in step counts). Participants were randomly assigned to either: 1) a competitive gamified group; 2) a cooperative gamified group; 3) a hybrid (competitive-cooperative) gamified group; or 4) a control group. The design of the gamified interventions was guided by gamification design frameworks identified in literature. The data gathered includes: 1) a longitudinal panel dataset of step counts to investigate the causal effect of gamification on physical activity behaviour; and 2) self-reported data to examine the effect of gamification on the users’ intrinsic motivation and perceived usefulness of the experience. This protocol outlines the procedure and processes followed during this experiment to facilitate replicability for future studies.peer-reviewe

    Fine-scale spatial and temporal variations in insecticide resistance in Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes in rural south-eastern Tanzania.

    BACKGROUND: Culex mosquitoes cause considerable biting nuisance and sporadic transmission of arboviral and filarial diseases. METHODS: Using standard World Health Organization procedures, insecticide resistance profiles and underlying mechanisms were investigated during dry and wet seasons of 2015 and 2016 in Culex pipiens complex from three neighbouring administrative wards in Ulanga District, Tanzania. Synergist tests with piperonyl butoxide, diethyl maleate, and triphenyl phosphate, were employed to investigate mechanisms of the observed resistance phenotypes. Proportional biting densities of Culex species, relative to other taxa, were determined from indoor surveillance data collected in 2012, 2013, and 2015. RESULTS: Insecticide resistance varied significantly between wards and seasons. For example, female mosquitoes in one ward were susceptible to bendiocarb and fenitrothion in the wet season, but resistant during the dry season, while in neighbouring ward, the mosquitoes were fully susceptible to these pesticides in both seasons. Similar variations occurred against bendiocarb, DDT, deltamethrin, and lambda-cyhalothrin. Surprisingly, with the exception of one ward in the wet season, the Culex populations were susceptible to permethrin, commonly used on bednets in the area. No insecticide resistance was observed against the organophosphates, pirimiphos-methyl and malathion, except for one incident of reduced susceptibility in the dry season. Synergist assays revealed possible involvement of monooxygenases, esterases, and glutathione S-transferase in pyrethroid and DDT resistance. Morphology-based identification and molecular assays of adult Culex revealed that 94% were Cx. pipiens complex, of which 81% were Cx. quinquefasciatus, 2% Cx. pipiens, and 3% hybrids. About 14% of the specimens were non-amplified during molecular identifications. Female adults collected indoors were 100% Cx. pipiens complex, and constituted 79% of the overall biting risk. CONCLUSIONS: The Cx. pipiens complex constituted the greatest biting nuisance inside people's houses, and showed resistance to most public health insecticides possible. Resistance varied at a fine geographical scale, between adjacent wards, and seasons, which warrants some modifications to current insecticide resistance monitoring strategies. Resistance phenotypes are partly mediated by metabolic mechanisms, but require further evaluation through biochemical and molecular techniques. The high densities and resistance in Culex could negatively influence the acceptability of other interventions such as those used against malaria mosquitoes

    Is Overweight in Stunted Preschool Children in Cameroon Related to Reductions in Fat Oxidation, Resting Energy Expenditure and Physical Activity?

    Recent studies suggest that early modifications in metabolic pathways and behaviour, leading to energy conservation and reduced linear growth, could represent adaptations to nutritional constraints during foetal life and infancy. Impaired fat oxidation, low resting energy expenditure and reduced physical activity, resulting from these adaptations, could facilitate fat storage and development of overweight in growth-retarded children that consume more energy-dense food. This study aims at assessing whether: (1) dual-burden preschool children (simultaneously stunted and overweight) of Yaounde (Cameroon) have low birth-weight (indicator of foetal undernutrition) and reductions in fat oxidation, resting energy expenditure (REE) and physical activity, (2) fat oxidation, REE and physical activity are associated with foetal growth.162 children (24-72 months) were considered: 22 stunted-overweight (SO), 40 stunted (S), 41 overweight (O), and 59 non stunted-non overweight (NSNO). Nutritional status and body composition were assessed using anthropometry and multifrequency bioimpedance analysis. Fasting respiratory quotient (RQ) and REE were measured by indirect calorimetry. Physical activity was determined using accelerometers, food questionnaires were used for diet assessment and birth-weight was noted. Mean RQs and REE (weight adjusted) did not differ between stunted children (SO and S) and non-stunted children (O and NSNO). SO and S children spent more time in sedentary activities than O children (p = 0.01 and p = 0.02, respectively) and less time in moderate-to-vigorous activities than NSNO children (p = 0.05 and p = 0.04, respectively). SO children's diet was less diverse (p = 0.01) with less animal products (p = 0.006). Multiple linear regressions model revealed that birth-weight is predictive of RQ (β = 0.237, p<0.01, R(2) = 0.08).This study showed that growth retardation in stunted-overweight children could be associated with postnatal nutritional deficiencies. Overweight in stunted children could be associated with reduced physical activity in the context of nutrition transition. High birth-weight was a predictor of reduced lipid oxidation, a risk factor of fat deposition

    Ontological Security and Public (Mis)Recognition of International Crises: Uncertainty, Political Imagining, and the Self

    Public narratives of unexpected international events frequently help (re)imagine uncertainty as something familiar or predictable. This process underlies social and political responses and is deeply significant in relation to identity and boundary security. I propose to read early perceptions of international crises through a reformulation of ontological security principles that find motivation for behaviour in self-identity needs. Political imagining is shown to seek continuous self-concepts and to routinize new encounters within familiar and self-affirming frames. This article suggests a new approach to ontological continuity: instead of an unchanging narrative its security may rest in a continuously positive version of the self, with narratives of others balancing and securing the relationship. In the second half of the paper I draw on interviews about the ‘Arab Spring’ to show how illusions of recognising unexpected events and the political imagining this produces can be motivated by self-concepts in need of security

    Obeticholic acid for the treatment of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis: interim analysis from a multicentre, randomised, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial

    Background Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common type of chronic liver disease that can lead to cirrhosis. Obeticholic acid, a farnesoid X receptor agonist, has been shown to improve the histological features of NASH. Here we report results from a planned interim analysis of an ongoing, phase 3 study of obeticholic acid for NASH. Methods In this multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, adult patients with definite NASH,non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) activity score of at least 4, and fibrosis stages F2–F3, or F1 with at least oneaccompanying comorbidity, were randomly assigned using an interactive web response system in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive oral placebo, obeticholic acid 10 mg, or obeticholic acid 25 mg daily. Patients were excluded if cirrhosis, other chronic liver disease, elevated alcohol consumption, or confounding conditions were present. The primary endpointsfor the month-18 interim analysis were fibrosis improvement (≥1 stage) with no worsening of NASH, or NASH resolution with no worsening of fibrosis, with the study considered successful if either primary endpoint was met. Primary analyses were done by intention to treat, in patients with fibrosis stage F2–F3 who received at least one dose of treatment and reached, or would have reached, the month 18 visit by the prespecified interim analysis cutoff date. The study also evaluated other histological and biochemical markers of NASH and fibrosis, and safety. This study is ongoing, and registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02548351, and EudraCT, 20150-025601-6. Findings Between Dec 9, 2015, and Oct 26, 2018, 1968 patients with stage F1–F3 fibrosis were enrolled and received at least one dose of study treatment; 931 patients with stage F2–F3 fibrosis were included in the primary analysis (311 in the placebo group, 312 in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group, and 308 in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group). The fibrosis improvement endpoint was achieved by 37 (12%) patients in the placebo group, 55 (18%) in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group (p=0·045), and 71 (23%) in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group (p=0·0002). The NASH resolution endpoint was not met (25 [8%] patients in the placebo group, 35 [11%] in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group [p=0·18], and 36 [12%] in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group [p=0·13]). In the safety population (1968 patients with fibrosis stages F1–F3), the most common adverse event was pruritus (123 [19%] in the placebo group, 183 [28%] in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group, and 336 [51%] in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group); incidence was generally mild to moderate in severity. The overall safety profile was similar to that in previous studies, and incidence of serious adverse events was similar across treatment groups (75 [11%] patients in the placebo group, 72 [11%] in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group, and 93 [14%] in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group). Interpretation Obeticholic acid 25 mg significantly improved fibrosis and key components of NASH disease activity among patients with NASH. The results from this planned interim analysis show clinically significant histological improvement that is reasonably likely to predict clinical benefit.
