Unveiling the prehistoric landscape at Stonehenge through multi-receiver EMI
YesArchaeological research at Stonehenge (UK) is increasingly aimed at understanding the dynamic of the wider archaeological landscape. Through the application of state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, unprecedented insight is being gathered into the buried archaeological features of the area. However, applied survey techniques have rarely targeted natural soil variation, and the detailed knowledge of the palaeotopography is consequently less complete. In addition, metallic topsoil debris, scattered over different parts of the Stonehenge landscape, often impacts the interpretation of geophysical datasets. The research presented here demonstrates how a single multi-receiver electromagnetic induction (EMI) survey, conducted over a 22 ha area within the Stonehenge landscape, offers detailed insight into natural and anthropogenic soil variation at Stonehenge. The soil variations that were detected through recording the electrical and magnetic soil variability, shed light on the genesis of the landscape, and allow for a better definition of potential palaeoenvironmental and archaeological sampling locations. Based on the multi-layered dataset, a procedure was developed to remove the influence of topsoil metal from the survey data, which enabled a more straightforward identification of the detected archaeology. The results provide a robust basis for further geoarchaeological research, while potential to differentiate between modern soil disturbances and the underlying sub-surface variations can help in solving conservation and management issues. Through expanding this approach over the wider area, we aim at a fuller understanding of the humanâlandscape interactions that have shaped the Stonehenge landscape
Evaluatie en waardering van de archeologische sites Rooiveld-Papenvijvers(Oostkamp, provincie West-Vlaanderen)
Dit rapport beschrijft de resultaten van het waarderend onderzoek op de archeologische sites Rooiveld-Papenvijvers in Oostkamp (West-Vlaanderen). De oudste sporen van menselijke activiteit in dit gebied gaan terug tot het mesolithicum. De bewoning tijdens het neolithicum is goed gedocumenteerd. Naast de opgegraven nederzetting te Waardamme Vijvers, leverde het proefsleuvenonderzoek te Papenvijvers een finaal-neolithische site (3de millennium cal BC). Verder leverden de beperkte prospecties op verschillende plaatsen, waaronder Oostkamp Nieuwenhove en Hertsberge Papevijvers, lithische artefacten op die naar alle waarschijnlijkheid tot een niet nader te bepalen fase van het neolithicum behoren. Deze situatie is vrij uniek voor Vlaanderen. Neolithische bewoning in de zandige delen van Vlaanderen ontbrak tot nog toe vrijwel, met uitzondering van enkele graven van de Klokbekercultuur. De opgraving te Waardamme Vijvers is bijzonder vanwege de ontdekking van de eerste en vooralsnog enige huisplattegrond uit het neolithicum in Vlaanderen. Sporen uit de bronstijd zijn dankzij de luchtfotografie heel talrijk in het gebied. Het desktop onderzoek leverde in totaal een negental cirkelvormige structuren op die naar alle waarschijnlijkheid mogen geĂŻnterpreteerd worden als resten van grafheuvels uit de vroege en midden-bronstijd. Het is ook duidelijk dat de regio in de bronstijd bewoond was, o.a. door de opgraving op de site Waardamme Vijvers. Voor de ijzertijd is de situatie vermoedelijk gelijklopend. De enige nederzetting die uit deze periode werd aangetroffen komt eveneens uit de opgraving in Waardamme Vijvers. Voor de Romeinse periode beschikken we slechts over de sporen van een grafveld op Waardamme Vijvers en keramiekvondsten. Latere periodes zijn alleen via cartografische bronnen gedocumenteerd. Het rapport eindigt met aanbevelingen voor verder onderzoek en beheer van dit gebied
French Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire Compared with an Accelerometer Cut Point to Classify Physical Activity among Pregnant Obese Women
Given the high risk for inactivity during pregnancy in obese women, validated questionnaires for physical activity (PA) assessment in this specific population is required before evaluating the effect of PA on perinatal outcomes. No questionnaire was validated in pregnant obese women. The Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ) has been designed based on activities reported during pregnancy and validated in pregnant women. We translated the PPAQ to French and assessed reliability and accuracy of this French version among pregnant obese women. In this cross-sectional study, pregnant obese women were evenly recruited at the end of each trimester of pregnancy. They completed the PPAQ twice, with an interval of 7 days in-between, to recall PA of the last three months. Between PPAQ assessments, participants wore an accelerometer (Actigraph GT1M) during 7 consecutive days. Fourty-nine (49) pregnant obese women (29.8±4.2 yrs, 34.7±5.1 kg.mâ2) participated to the study. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) between the two PPAQ assessments were 0.90 for total activity, 0.86 for light and for moderate intensity, and 0.81 for vigorous intensity activities. It ranged from 0.59 for âTransportationâ to 0.89 for âHousehold and Caregivingâ activities. Spearman correlation coefficients (SCCs) between the PPAQ and the Matthewsâ cut point used to classify an activity of moderate and above intensity were 0.50 for total activity, 0.25 for vigorous intensity and 0.40 for moderate intensity. The correlations between the PPAQ and the accelerometer counts were 0.58 for total activity, 0.39 for vigorous intensity and 0.49 for moderate intensity. The highest SCCs were for âOccupationâ and âHousehold and Caregivingâ activities. Comparisons with other standard cutpoints were presented in files S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7. The PPAQ is reliable and moderately accurate for the measure of PA of various intensities and types among pregnant obese women
Open Data for Global Science
The global science system stands at a critical juncture. On the one hand, it is overwhelmed by a hidden avalanche of ephemeral bits that are central components of modern research and of the emerging âcyberinfrastructureâ4 for e-Science.5 The rational management and exploitation of this cascade of digital assets offers boundless opportunities for research and applications. On the other hand, the ability to access and use this rising flood of data seems to lag behind, despite the rapidly growing capabilities of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to make much more effective use of those data. As long as the attention for data policies and data management by researchers, their organisations and their funders does not catch up with the rapidly changing research environment, the research policy and funding entities in many cases will perpetuate the systemic inefficiencies, and the resulting loss or underutilisation of valuable data resources derived from public investments. There is thus an urgent need for rationalised national strategies and more coherent international arrangements for sustainable access to public research data, both to data produced directly by government entities and to data generated in academic and not-for-profit institutions with public funding. In this chapter, we examine some of the implications of the âdata drivenâ research and possible ways to overcome existing barriers to accessibility of public research data. Our perspective is framed in the context of the predominantly publicly funded global science system. We begin by reviewing the growing role of digital data in research and outlining the roles of stakeholders in the research community in developing data access regimes. We then discuss the hidden costs of closed data systems, the benefits and limitations of openness as the default principle for data access, and the emerging open access models that are beginning to form digitally networked commons. We conclude by examining the rationale and requirements for developing overarching international principles from the top down, as well as flexible, common-use contractual templates from the bottom up, to establish data access regimes founded on a presumption of openness, with the goal of better capturing the benefits from the existing and future scientific data assets. The âPrinciples and Guidelines for Access to Research Data from Public Fundingâ from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), reported on in another article by Pilat and Fukasaku,6 are the most important recent example of the high-level (inter)governmental approach. The common-use licenses promoted by the Science Commons are a leading example of flexible arrangements originating within the community. Finally, we should emphasise that we focus almost exclusively on the policyâthe institutional, socioeconomic, and legal aspects of data accessârather than on the technical and management practicalities that are also important, but beyond the scope of this article
Characterization of Granulations of Calcium and Apatite in Serum as Pleomorphic Mineralo-Protein Complexes and as Precursors of Putative Nanobacteria
Calcium and apatite granulations are demonstrated here to form in both human and
fetal bovine serum in response to the simple addition of either calcium or
phosphate, or a combination of both. These granulations are shown to represent
precipitating complexes of protein and hydroxyapatite (HAP) that display marked
pleomorphism, appearing as round, laminated particles, spindles, and films.
These same complexes can be found in normal untreated serum, albeit at much
lower amounts, and appear to result from the progressive binding of serum
proteins with apatite until reaching saturation, upon which the mineralo-protein
complexes precipitate. Chemically and morphologically, these complexes are
virtually identical to the so-called nanobacteria (NB) implicated in numerous
diseases and considered unusual for their small size, pleomorphism, and the
presence of HAP. Like NB, serum granulations can seed particles upon transfer to
serum-free medium, and their main protein constituents include albumin,
complement components 3 and 4A, fetuin-A, and apolipoproteins A1 and B100, as
well as other calcium and apatite binding proteins found in the serum. However,
these serum mineralo-protein complexes are formed from the direct chemical
binding of inorganic and organic phases, bypassing the need for any biological
processes, including the long cultivation in cell culture conditions deemed
necessary for the demonstration of NB. Thus, these serum granulations may result
from physiologically inherent processes that become amplified with calcium
phosphate loading or when subjected to culturing in medium. They may be viewed
as simple mineralo-protein complexes formed from the deployment of
calcification-inhibitory pathways used by the body to cope with excess calcium
phosphate so as to prevent unwarranted calcification. Rather than representing
novel pathophysiological mechanisms or exotic lifeforms, these results indicate
that the entities described earlier as NB most likely originate from calcium and
apatite binding factors in the serum, presumably calcification inhibitors, that
upon saturation, form seeds for HAP deposition and growth. These calcium
granulations are similar to those found in organisms throughout nature and may
represent the products of more general calcium regulation pathways involved in
the control of calcium storage, retrieval, tissue deposition, and disposal
