he Study on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Rubber Latex Composites with SiO2 addition have two main objectives which are to study and establish the physical and mechanical properties of the rubber wood lignin composites and evaluate the oil resistance effect of RWL composites with SiO2 addition. Silica sand that used in this project is collected from around Tronoh and has the particles size of less than 43μm. There is a derivation of process of new lignin from Malaysian Rubber tree but there is still no establishment on their relevant properties. This project will investigate the good property of rubber wood lignin and silica sand by produce a newly improved rubber and establish on relevant physical and mechanical properties of the rubber wood lignin composites with silica sand addition. This study will cover the understanding of composites advantages. The preparation of silica sand to produce 43μm size is by using ball milling. This silica will through the mixing process with sulphur as cure agent and zinc oxide as activator and lignin as additive in rubber. After mixing, the rubber composites will be stored in the bottle for maturation for two days, and casting. The rubber film will be rinse off with water and hanging for one day. The last process is drying in oven at 100oC for 30 min and stamping into the dumbbell and circular shape for further testing. The result obtains is elastic modulus increasing from 0.043MPa for Batch 1 to 0.095MPa for Batch 2 and 0.142MPa for Batch 3. The same pattern can be observed for Batch 4 which has a value of 0.085MPa and 0.100 for Batch 5. The FESEM study shown us that in Batch 2 and Batch 4 there have silica agglomerates caused by the non-uniform distribution of silica in rubber compound which leads to brittlement of the material. Based on swelling testing results, Batch 1 (control) was less resistance to oil, 125% due to unsaturated polymer which is degrades in oil. Oil resistance was far worse when the percentage of silica content was 6%, 141.7% for Batch 2 and 120.4% for Batch 4 as compared to 111.6% for Batch 3 and 92.1% for Batch 5 which has 12% of silica contents which were improved. Therefore, the good physical property in oil resistance was established in Batch 3 and Batch 5 will give huge contribution in industrial and automotive industry

Currently, conventional wastewater treatment process used chemical coagulant such as Aluminium sulphate. However, the residual aluminium in treated wastewater causes toxicity and serious health issues such as Alzheimer’ disease. Thus, in this study the potential of nanosized Carica Papaya (CP) seeds treated by silane coupling agent incorporated to pullulan on wastewater treatment was investigated. The biocoagulant produce prepared at a different composition of CP range from 1% to 9% was used to treat sewage wastewater. The biocoagulant was characterized by particle size analyser, FTIR and FESEM. The treated wastewater was analyzed by jar test in term of turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen and Total Suspended Solid with biocoagulant dosage at 0.6 g/L. The size of nanosized biocoagulant was obtained at 608.9 nm. Silane treatment provides well dispersion of nanosized Carica Papaya seed powder in the pullulan matrix phase. FTIR analysis shows the presence of O-H, C=O and Si-O-CH3 bond. The highest turbidity reduction observed at the composition of nanosized CP5/P and silane treated nanosized CP5/P up to 93.89% and 93.98% respectively. However, no significant changes observed on turbidity reduction with increasing CP seeds content for both biocoagulant. Further, at these compositions, the TSS reduced up to 20% and 60% respectively. The DO value of wastewater decreased from the initial value and the increased the pH from 6.58 to 6.69 lead to the neutral condition. Therefore, the effectiveness of both untreated and silane treated biocoagulant were further confirmed upon textile wastewater with turbidity reduction achieved up to 7.84% and 14.54 % respectively. Overall, silane treatment enhanced the effectiveness of nanosized CP modified pullulan as biocoagulant

    Get PDF
Due to the reliance of the world on fossil fuel as major source of energy, the CO2 emission to the environment is inevitable which is responsible for global warming. Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to fuel, such as methanol, methane etc. is a promising way to address the CO2 emission and energy crisis. The methanol produces from the photocataytic conversion can be used as source of fuel. CdS is a classical photocatalyst shows high activity under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. UV light covers only 4% of the solar light spectrum, hence visible light active photocatalyst for CO2 conversion is important. In the present work, Bi2S3/CdS was synthesized as an effective visible light responsive photocatalyst for CO2 reduction. The Bi2S3/CdS photocatalyst was prepared by the hydrothermal reaction between the precursors. The prepared powder was calcined at 250 in the muffle furnace. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The product has been analysed by using gas chromatograph flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The photocatalytic activity in methanol production as a function of time has been investigated. The maximum yield of methanol was obtained after 6 hours of reaction. The effect of CdS concentration in Bi2S3/CdS photocatalyst was investigated and the yields of methanol were increased with increasing of CdS concentration. The maximum yield of methanol was obtained with Bi2S3/CdS with 45 % of CdS. The present works shown the potentially of Bi2S3/CdS for CO2 reduction under visible light

Introduction: Giant cell tumour of bone is an aggressive benign bone tumor composed of unstable spindle shaped neoplastic mononuclear stromal cells and reactive components osteoclast like giant cells. GCT in Asian population including Malaysia, presented with more aggressive tumour and higher rate of lung metastasis. Although numerous attempts have been made to predict the behavior of GCT, there are no definite biological or histological parameters to determine the prognosis or aggressiveness of this lesion. Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the presence of RANKL activity in aggressive type (stage III) GCT and its effectiveness as a prognostic marker in predicting risk of local recurrence and lung metastasis in GCT of bone. Material and method: We evaluated 39 cases of stage III GCT of bone for RANKL expression using immunohistochemical staining. There were 21 males and 18 females patients and the mean age was 36.2 (ranged between 11 to 66 years old). Majority of the patients were Malays (85%) followed by Chinese (15%). 46.2% of the tumour occurred at a knee region followed by distal radius (17.9%). 35 out of 39 (90%) patients were treated with wide resection, 3 by intralesional resection and 1 cases of metacarpal GCT with extensive soft tissue involvement were treated by rays amputation. 10% of cases had local recurrence and 20% presented with or eventually developed lung metastasis. 5% of the cases presented with local recurrence and lung metastasis. Expression of RANKL was evaluated by immuno-histochemical staining techniques using the rabbit polyclonal antibody RANKL representing full-length RANKL human origin from Santa Cruz Biotechnology. The scoring was done by counting the positively stained cell in the background of 1000 mononuclear stromal cells. Data was analyzed using PASW version 18.0. Result: RANKL expressions were evaluated by percentage of expression (75%), staining intensity (1 to 3) and final score of the two value (1-2= weak, 3-4= moderate, 5-6= strong). 82% of the sample expressed RANKL >75% from whole stromal cell population. Base on staining intensity, 48% scored 2, and only 23% had maximum intensity (3). 66.6% demonstrate strong RANKL expression. The mean value for RANKL according to percentage of staining, staining intensity and final score was 2.79 (SD 0.47), 1.95 (SD 0.72) and 4.77 (SD 0.99) respectively. The mean percentagestaining between no recurrence and with recurrence group was significantly different (p=0.009). Conclusion: RANKL expression is generally high in stage III GCT and is a reliable prognostic markers in predicting the risk of local recurrence but not in lung metastasis
