    Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) for scramjet inlet-isolator investigation

    Background-oriented Schlieren (BOS) technique is a recently invented non-intrusive flow diagnostic method which has yet to be fully explored in its capabilities. In this paper, BOS technique has been applied for investigating the general flow field characteristics inside a generic scramjet inlet-isolator with Mach 5 flow. The difficulty in finding the delicate balance between measurement sensitivity and measurement area image focusing has been demonstrated. The differences between direct cross-correlation (DCC) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) raw data processing algorithm have also been demonstrated. As an exploratory study of BOS capability, this paper found that BOS is simple yet robust enough to be used to visualize complex flow in a scramjet inlet in hypersonic flow. However, in this case its quantitative data can be strongly affected by 3-dimensionality thus obscuring the density value with significant errors

    Flow characteristics of various three-dimensional rounded contour bumps in a Mach 1.3 freestream

    Streamwise and spanwise flow pattern over three rounded contour bumps with different flow control strategies employed have been experimentally investigated in a Mach 1.3 freestream. Surface oil flow visualisation, Schlieren photography and particle image velocimetry measurements were used for flow diagnostics. Experimental data showed that in a Mach 1.3 freestream over the baseline plain bump, significant flow separation appeared at the bump crest that led to the formation of a large wake region downstream. In addition, two large counter-rotating spanwise vortices were formed in the bump valley. It was observed that the use of the passive by-pass blowing jet in the bump valley showed no obvious effects in reducing the sizes of both the wake region and the spanwise vortices in the bump valley. In contrast, it was found that the size of the wake region and the spanwise vortices could be reduced by blowing sonic jet in the bump valley. This approach of flow control found to be the most effective when the total pressure of the blowing jet was 2 bar. It is deduced that the active blowing jet hindered the formation of the spanwise vortices in the bump valley as well as deflected the shear layer downwards so that a smaller re-circulating bubble was formed downstream of the bump crest

    Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: clinical and practical guidelines

    Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe adverse drug reaction, consisting of progressive bone destruction in the maxillofacial region of patients. ONJ can be caused by two pharmacological agents: Antiresorptive (including bisphosphonates (BPs) and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand inhibitors) and antiangiogenic. MRONJ pathophysiology is not completely elucidated. There are several suggested hypothesis that could explain its unique localization to the jaws: Inflammation or infection, microtrauma, altered bone remodeling or over suppression of bone resorption, angiogenesis inhibition, soft tissue BPs toxicity, peculiar biofilm of the oral cavity, terminal vascularization of the mandible, suppression of immunity, or Vitamin D deficiency. Dental screening and adequate treatment are fundamental to reduce the risk of osteonecrosis in patients under antiresorptive or antiangiogenic therapy, or before initiating the administration. The treatment of MRONJ is generally difficult and the optimal therapy strategy is still to be established. For this reason, prevention is even more important. It is suggested that a multidisciplinary team approach including a dentist, an oncologist, and a maxillofacial surgeon to evaluate and decide the best therapy for the patient. The choice between a conservative treatment and surgery is not easy, and it should be made on a case by case basis. However, the initial approach should be as conservative as possible. The most important goals of treatment for patients with established MRONJ are primarily the control of infection, bone necrosis progression, and pain.     Odd properly colored cycles in edge-colored graphs

    It is well-known that an undirected graph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. A less obvious, but similar result holds for directed graphs: a strongly connected digraph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. Can this result be further generalized to more general graphs such as edge-colored graphs? In this paper, we study this problem and show how to decide if there exists an odd properly colored cycle in a given edge-colored graph. As a by-product, we show how to detect if there is a perfect matching in a graph with even (or odd) number of edges in a given edge set

    The prevalence of compulsive buying: a meta-analysis

    Aims: To estimate the pooled prevalence of compulsive buying behaviour (CBB) indifferent populations and to determine the effect of age, gender, location and screening instrument on the reported heterogeneity inestimates of CBB and whether publication bias could be identified. Methods: Three databases were searched(Medline, PsychInfo, Web of Science) using the terms 'compulsive buying' 'pathological buying' and 'compulsive shopping' to estimate the pooled prevalence of CBB in different populations. Forty studies reporting 49 prevalence estimates from 16 countries were located (n=32000). To conduct the meta-analysis, data from non-clinical studies regarding mean age and gender proportion, geographical study location and screening instrument used to assess CBB were extracted by multiple independent observers and evaluated using a random-effects model. Four a priori subgroups were analysed using pooled estimation (Cohen's Q) and covariate testing (moderator and meta-regression analysis). Results: The CBB pooled prevalence of adult representative studies was 4.9% (3.4–6.9%, eight estimates, 10 102 participants), although estimates were higher among university students: 8.3% (5.9–11.5%,19 estimates, 14 947 participants) in adult non-representative samples: 12.3% (7.6–19.1%, 11 estimates, 3929 participants) and in shopping-specific samples: 16.2% (8.8–27.8%, 11 estimates, 4686 participants). Being young and female were associated with increased tendency, but not location (United States versus non-United States). Meta-regression revealed large heterogeneity within subgroups,due mainly to diverse measures and time-frames(current versus life-time) used to assess CBB. Conclusions: A pooled estimate of compulsive buying behaviour in the populations studied is approximately 5%, but there is large variation between samples accounted for largely by use of different time-frames and measures

    Nanoparticle Network Formation in Nanostructured and Disordered Block Copolymer Matrices

    Incorporation of nanoparticles composed of surface-functionalized fumed silica (FS) or native colloidal silica (CS) into a nanostructured block copolymer yields hybrid nanocomposites whose mechanical properties can be tuned by nanoparticle concentration and surface chemistry. In this work, dynamic rheology is used to probe the frequency and thermal responses of nanocomposites composed of a symmetric poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (SM) diblock copolymer and varying in nanoparticle concentration and surface functionality. At sufficiently high loading levels, FS nanoparticle aggregates establish a load-bearing colloidal network within the copolymer matrix. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal the morphological characteristics of the nanocomposites under these conditions
