Consciousness And Self-Identity: A Phenomenological View on a Cognitive Issue

    Get PDF
The paper aims at analyzing the inner development of self-identity from its pre-reflective level to the full awareness one. The recent findings of neurosciences and cognitive studies suggest focusing attention on the complex relation between self as consciousness and self as subjectivity, both with regard to their interdependency and to their reference to a shared context. Phenomenology, thanks to the careful consideration of the issues regarding the constitution of mental life articulated by its classic researches and current inquires, offers a valuable opportunity to set the scientific outcomes in an authentically philosophical perspective

Gender Equality Politics in the Changing European Union: The European Union Anti-Discrimination Directive and Sexual Harassment. CES Working paper, no. 134, 2006

The European integration process has provided both challenges and opportunities to domestic women’s movements. One such ambivalent success is the European Union anti-discrimination directive of 2002 that is the outcome of the lobbying efforts of an emerging European transnational advocacy network on gender. The 2002 Directive prohibits sex discrimination, including sexual and gender harassment. It calls on member states to better protect the rights of victims of sexual harassment and to ensure the integrity, dignity, and equality of women and men at work. This paper examines the 2002 Directive and its potential to effect significant changes in EU member states, in particular, to improve victims’ rights in member states laws. It addresses the main question: “Is the EU Directive an opportunity to progress in the direction of protecting victims’ rights?” The argument advanced here is that the 2002 Directive is the outcome of a political compromise among the member states, on which feminist discourses did have some bearing. On the one hand, the 2002 Directive can be interpreted as a success of feminist activism around sexual harassment, in particular, in the very definition, linking the problem to sex discrimination. On the other hand, it has limitations and does not go as far as feminists had hoped; for example, the EU has left it up to member states to deal with the most difficult aspects of the problem, , prevention, implementation, and enforcement of the laws

This issue is dedicated to an unusual subject and scope for The Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy. Instead of our customary focus on the Pacific Northwest, this book considers issues of international environmental justice. The articles published herein arose out of a symposium sponsored by the Journal at the University of Washington, titled Climate-Migration: Food Security, Land Tenure and Gender. The purpose of the symposium was to encourage the interdisciplinary discourse on the human and environmental impacts of climate change worldwide, specifically focusing on disproportionately affected groups. The book features unique articles from authors personally qualified to speak to these issues—many come from the affected regions themselves. The Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy is proud to present articles by Sumudu Atapattu, Sara Curran, Deng Haifeng, and Medhanit Adamu

A Sinking Ship: EPA Regulation of the Navy Training Program SINKEX under the Ocean Dumping Act and the Toxic Substances Control Act

    Get PDF
The EPA currently regulates the Navy program Sink Exercise (SINKEX) under a permit issued under the Ocean Dumping Act. The Navy regards SINKEX as both a “live fire exercise,” important for the training of sailors in tactics and operations, and as a ship disposal program. Due to the toxic materials used to construct the derelict ships–including PCBs, asbestos, and lead–a case was filed in San Francisco District Court alleging that the EPA is required to regulate and permit SINKEX under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). This comment addresses the complexities arising from EPA permitting of SINKEX, including a comparison of the Ocean Dumping Act with the TSCA, military waivers and exemptions present in both statutes, and a discussion of possible interagency cooperation and enforcement measures this may implicate. This comment concludes that the most effective method for disposing of derelict ships while maintaining environmental and human health as well as national security is legislative reform and an increased budget for disposal

The Development of a Reading Readiness Program Designed to be Implemented into a Kindergarten Curriculum

    Get PDF
The goal of this project was to develop a reading readiness program which could be implemented into a given kindergarten curriculum. The focus of the paper was to identify the basic, skills necessary for successful reading and to list activities that the classroom teacher could use to increase a child\u27s level of ability in each area. The seven basic skills identified as necessary pre-reading skills were; language development, listening skills, visual discrimination, visual memory, auditory discrimination, auditory memory and perceptual motor development. Over all goals for the project were also developed. Each of the seven areas discussed included; objectives, activities and assessment inventories. Recommendations for the project were discussed In terms of possible other approaches toward reading readiness

Revisit Sparse Polynomial Interpolation based on Randomized Kronecker Substitution

In this paper, a new reduction based interpolation algorithm for black-box multivariate polynomials over finite fields is given. The method is based on two main ingredients. A new Monte Carlo method is given to reduce black-box multivariate polynomial interpolation to black-box univariate polynomial interpolation over any ring. The reduction algorithm leads to multivariate interpolation algorithms with better or the same complexities most cases when combining with various univariate interpolation algorithms. We also propose a modified univariate Ben-or and Tiwarri algorithm over the finite field, which has better total complexity than the Lagrange interpolation algorithm. Combining our reduction method and the modified univariate Ben-or and Tiwarri algorithm, we give a Monte Carlo multivariate interpolation algorithm, which has better total complexity in most cases for sparse interpolation of black-box polynomial over finite fields

Skeletal Editing—Nitrogen Deletion of Secondary Amines by Anomeric Amide Reagents

    Get PDF
Late-stage modification is highly desirable for the diversification and modification of biologically active compounds. Peripheral editing (e.g., C−H activation) has been the predominant methodology, whereas skeletal editing is in its infancy. The single-atom N-deletion using anomeric amide reagents constitutes a powerful tool to modify the underlying molecular skeletons of secondary amines. N-pivaloyloxy-N-alkoxyamide is easily prepared on a large scale and promotes C−C bond formation in good yields under the extrusion of N2 for a variety of (cyclic) aliphatic amines. The exploitation of widely available amines allows the use of existing amine synthesis protocols to translate into the construction of new C−C bonds, enabling ring contraction and the potential for structure optimization of biologically active compounds
