Wormhole Cosmic Censorship
We analyze the properties of a Kerr-like wormhole supported by phantom
matter, which is an exact solution of the Einstein-phantom field equations. It
is shown that the solution has a naked ring singularity which is unreachable to
null geodesics falling freely from the outside. Similarly to Roger Penrose's
cosmic censorship, that states that all naked singularities in the Universe
must be protected by event horizons, here we conjecture from our results that a
naked singularity can also be fully protected by the intrinsic properties of a
wormhole's throat
The ALMaQUEST Survey XIV: do radial molecular gas flows affect the star-forming ability of barred galaxies?
We investigate whether barred galaxies are statistically more likely to harbour radial molecular gas flows and what effect those flows have on their global properties. Using 46 galaxies from the ALMA-MaNGA QUEnching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) survey, we identify galaxies hosting optical bars using a combination of the morphological classifications in Galaxy Zoo 2 and HyperLEDA. In order to detect radial molecular gas flows, we employ full 3D kinematic modelling of the ALMaQUEST 12CO(1-0) datacubes. By combining our bar classifications with our radial bar-driven flow detections, we find that galaxies classed as barred are statistically more likely to host large-scale radial gas motions compared to their un-barred and edge-on galaxy counterparts. Moreover, the majority of barred galaxies require multi-component surface brightness profiles in their best-fit models, indicative of the presence of resonance systems. We find that galaxies classed as barred with radial bar-driven flows (âbarred + radial flowâ subset) have significantly suppressed global star-formation efficiencies compared to barred galaxies without radial bar-driven flows and galaxies in the other morphological sub-samples. Our âbarred + radial flowâ subset galaxies also possess consistently centrally concentrated molecular gas distributions, with no indication of depleted gas mass fractions, suggesting that gas exhaustion is not the cause of their suppressed star formation. Furthermore, these objects have higher median gas mass surface densities in their central 1Â kpc, implying that a central gas enhancements do not fuel central starbursts in these objects. We propose that dynamical effects, such as shear caused by large-scale inflows of gas, act to gravitationally stabilise the inner gas reservoirs
From modular to centralized organization of synchronization in functional areas of the cat cerebral cortex
Recent studies have pointed out the importance of transient synchronization
between widely distributed neural assemblies to understand conscious
perception. These neural assemblies form intricate networks of neurons and
synapses whose detailed map for mammals is still unknown and far from our
experimental capabilities. Only in a few cases, for example the C. elegans, we
know the complete mapping of the neuronal tissue or its mesoscopic level of
description provided by cortical areas. Here we study the process of transient
and global synchronization using a simple model of phase-coupled oscillators
assigned to cortical areas in the cerebral cat cortex. Our results highlight
the impact of the topological connectivity in the developing of
synchronization, revealing a transition in the synchronization organization
that goes from a modular decentralized coherence to a centralized synchronized
regime controlled by a few cortical areas forming a Rich-Club connectivity

Urban Heat Island and Vulnerable Population. The Case of Madrid
The Urban Heat Island effect shows the differences among temperatures in urban areas and the surrounding rural ones. Previous studies have demonstrated that temperature differences could be up to 8 °C during the hottest periods of summer in Madrid , and that it varies according to the urban structure. Associated to this effect, the impact of temperature increase over dwelling indoor thermal comfort seems to double cooling energy demand . In Madrid, fuel poor households already suffering from inadequate indoor temperatures can face important overheating problems and, as a consequence, relevant health problems could become more frequent and stronger. This poses an increment in mortality rates in risk groups that should be evaluated. This research is aimed at establishing the geospatial connection between the urban heat island and the most vulnerable population living in the city of Madrid. Hence, those areas most in need for an urban intervention can be detected and prioritized
Sample Size under Inverse Negative Binomial Group Testing for Accuracy in Parameter Estimation
Background:The group testing method has been proposed for the detection and estimation of genetically modified plants (adventitious presence of unwanted transgenic plants, AP). For binary response variables (presence or absence), group testing is efficient when the prevalence is low, so that estimation, detection, and sample size methods have been developed under the binomial model. Methodology/Principal Findings: This research proposes three sample size procedures (two computational and one analytic) for estimating prevalence using group testing under inverse (negative) binomial sampling. These methods provide the required number of positive pools (rm), given a pool size (k), for estimating the proportion of AP plants using the Dorfman model and inverse (negative) binomial sampling. We give real and simulated examples to show how to apply these methods and the proposed sample-size formula. The Monte Carlo method was used to study the coverage and level of assurance achieved by the proposed sample sizes. An R program to create other scenarios is given in Appendix S2.
Conclusions: The three methods ensure precision in the estimated proportion of AP because they guarantee that the width (W) of the confidence interval (CI) will be equal to, or narrower than, the desired width (v), with a probability of c. With the Monte Carlo study we found that the computational Wald procedure (method 2) produces the more precise sample size (with coverage and assurance levels very close to nominal values) and that the samples size based on the Clopper-Pearson CI (method 1) is conservative (overestimates the sample size); the analytic Wald sample size method we developed (method 3) sometimes underestimated the optimum number of pools
Scalar-field Pressure in Induced Gravity with Higgs Potential and Dark Matter
A model of induced gravity with a Higgs potential is investigated in detail
in view of the pressure components related to the scalar-field excitations. The
physical consequences emerging as an artifact due to the presence of these
pressure terms are analysed in terms of the constraints parting from energy
density, solar-relativistic effects and galactic dynamics along with the dark

Olanzapine-Induced Hyperphagia and Weight Gain Associate with Orexigenic Hypothalamic Neuropeptide Signaling without Concomitant AMPK Phosphorylation
The success of antipsychotic drug treatment in patients with schizophrenia is limited by the propensity of these drugs to induce hyperphagia, weight gain and other metabolic disturbances, particularly evident for olanzapine and clozapine. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in antipsychotic-induced hyperphagia remain unclear. Here, we investigate the effect of olanzapine administration on the regulation of hypothalamic mechanisms controlling food intake, namely neuropeptide expression and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation in rats. Our results show that subchronic exposure to olanzapine upregulates neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti related protein (AgRP) and downregulates proopiomelanocortin (POMC) in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC). This effect was evident both in rats fed ad libitum and in pair-fed rats. Of note, despite weight gain and increased expression of orexigenic neuropeptides, subchronic administration of olanzapine decreased AMPK phosphorylation levels. This reduction in AMPK was not observed after acute administration of either olanzapine or clozapine. Overall, our data suggest that olanzapine-induced hyperphagia is mediated through appropriate changes in hypothalamic neuropeptides, and that this effect does not require concomitant AMPK activation. Our data shed new light on the hypothalamic mechanism underlying antipsychotic-induced hyperphagia and weight gain, and provide the basis for alternative targets to control energy balance
Development of a vehicle track interaction model to predict the vibratory benefits of rail grinding in the time domain
Imperfections in the wheel-rail contact are one of the main sources of generation of railway vibrations. Consequently, it is essential to take expensive corrective maintenance measures, the results of which may be unknown. In order to assess the effectiveness of these measures, this paper develops a vehicle-track interaction model in the time domain of a curved track with presence of rail corrugation on the inner rail. To characterize the behavior of the track, a numerical finite element model is developed using ANSYS software, while the behavior of the vehicle is characterized by a unidirectional model of two masses developed with VAMPIRE PRO software. The overloads obtained with the dynamic model are applied to the numerical model and then, the vibrational response of the track is obtained. Modeling relationships between calving traits: a comparison between standard and recursive mixed models
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The use of structural equation models for the analysis of recursive and simultaneous relationships between phenotypes has become more popular recently. The aim of this paper is to illustrate how these models can be applied in animal breeding to achieve parameterizations of different levels of complexity and, more specifically, to model phenotypic recursion between three calving traits: gestation length (GL), calving difficulty (CD) and stillbirth (SB). All recursive models considered here postulate heterogeneous recursive relationships between GL and liabilities to CD and SB, and between liability to CD and liability to SB, depending on categories of GL phenotype.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Four models were compared in terms of goodness of fit and predictive ability: 1) standard mixed model (SMM), a model with unstructured (co)variance matrices; 2) recursive mixed model 1 (RMM1), assuming that residual correlations are due to the recursive relationships between phenotypes; 3) RMM2, assuming that correlations between residuals and contemporary groups are due to recursive relationships between phenotypes; and 4) RMM3, postulating that the correlations between genetic effects, contemporary groups and residuals are due to recursive relationships between phenotypes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>For all the RMM considered, the estimates of the structural coefficients were similar. Results revealed a nonlinear relationship between GL and the liabilities both to CD and to SB, and a linear relationship between the liabilities to CD and SB.</p> <p>Differences in terms of goodness of fit and predictive ability of the models considered were negligible, suggesting that RMM3 is plausible.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The applications examined in this study suggest the plausibility of a nonlinear recursive effect from GL onto CD and SB. Also, the fact that the most restrictive model RMM3, which assumes that the only cause of correlation is phenotypic recursion, performs as well as the others indicates that the phenotypic recursion may be an important cause of the observed patterns of genetic and environmental correlations.</p
Flavor violating leptonic decays of Ď and Îź leptons in the Standard Model with massive neutrinos
We have revisited the computations of the flavor
violating leptonic decays of the Ď and Îź leptons into three
lighter charged leptons in the Standard Model with massive
neutrinos. We were driven by a claimed unnaturally large
branching ratio predicted for the Ď
â â Îź
â
l
+
l
â (l = Îź, e)
decays (Pham, Eur Phys J C 8:513 1999), which was at odds
with the corresponding predictions for the Îź
â â eâeâe+
processes (Petcov, Sov J Nucl Phys 25:340 1977). In contrast
with the prediction in [17], our results are strongly suppressed
and in good agreement with the approximationmade
in Ref. [15], where masses and momenta of the external particles
were neglected in order to deal with the loop integrals.
However -as a result of keeping external momenta and
masses in the computation of the dominant penguin and box
diagrams- we even find slightly smaller branching fractions.
Therefore, we confirm that any future observation of such
processes would be an unambiguous manifestation of new
physics beyond the Standard Model.Finally, we also
