    Health-related quality of life impact of a triple combination of olmesartan medoxomil, amlodipine besylate and hydrochlorotiazide in subjects with hypertension

    Background A post-hoc analysis was performed on the data from a 54 weeks phase III study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00923091) to measure changes in the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of 2,690 patients aged ≥18 with moderate-to-severe hypertension who received one of six doses of olmesartan/amlodipine/hydrochlorothiazide (OLM/AML/HCTZ), using the MINICHAL and EQ-5D instruments. Methods Descriptive statistics were used to assess blood pressure and HRQoL scores over the study period. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to identify those factors that could possibly have influenced HRQoL. Linear regression was used to assess the relationship between changes in blood pressure and HRQoL scores. Results Patients’ baseline MINICHAL mood and somatic domains scores were 5.5 and 2.6. Over the study period HRQoL improved as both MINICHAL scores decreased by 31-33%. Patients’ baseline EQ-5D index and VAS scores were 0.9 and 73.4 respectively, increasing by 6% and 12% over the study period. Patients’ QALY gain over the 54 weeks study period was estimated to be 0.029 QALYs. The ANCOVA showed that changes in patients’ HRQoL was likely to have been influenced by patients’ achievement of blood pressure control, the amount of concomitant medication and patients’ last used dosage strength of antihypertensive. Linear regression showed that blood pressure improvement may have been associated with improved HRQoL. Conclusions This study showed that OLM/AML/HCTZ reduced blood pressure and significantly increased blood pressure control whilst improving patients’ HRQoL.     Water bodies contaminated with pesticides is a major constrain faced by every agriculturebased country. Providing safe potable drinking water to public has proved to be a challenge insuch situations. Rutile is found in enormous concentrations in the Pulmoddai beach sanddeposit, and is exported as raw material since 1968, without utilising the deposit for any otherpurpose.There were number of reports published regarding the photocatalytic effect of rutile and useof pure titanium dioxide to remove pesticides globally, but according to the availableliterature, no studies on the potential effect of natural rutile sand in Sri Lanka has beencarried out for water purification facility. Therefore, this is the first record on profitableutilisation of the rutile mineral deposit for development of water treatment technology in SriLanka. The naural rutile sand for the experiment was supplied from the mineral deposit ofPulmoddai, Eastern Province.The photocatalytic activity of natural rutile sand was induced by providing ultra violet (UV)illumination. In vitro laboratory experiments were carried out to assess the photocatalyticability of natural rutile sand on carbofuran. The results revealed the potential photocatalyticdegradation of carbofuran by natural rutile sand. The carbofuran removal efficiency ofnatural rutile was compared with pure titanium dioxide (TiO2). The results showed thatremoval rates of carbofuran by natural rutile sand with UV illumination was 72%, whereaspure granular/powder TiO2 showed 74% and 76% of degradation of carbofuran respectively.When carbofuran was exposed to only UV light treatment, 33% of carbofuran reduction wasdetected.Based on the results obtained, a filter model was designed using natural rutile sand andevaluated the potential use of natural rutile sand to remove carbofuran. The filter modelshowed that there were 46%, 50%, 61%, 65% and 71% removal of carbofuran at 60, 120,180, 240 and 300 minutes respectively, for a water circulation rate of 500l /h.The study showed that there is an enormous potential of utilising natural rutile sand toremove hazardous pesticides from water and the result will help to improve a water filter infuture as well.Keywords: Carbofuran, Photocatalysis, Rutile, Water purificatio

    Identifying and prioritising services in European terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems

    Ecosystems are multifunctional and provide humanity with a broad array of vital services. Effective management of services requires an improved evidence base, identifying the role of ecosystems in delivering multiple services, which can assist policy-makers in maintaining them. Here, information from the literature and scientific experts was used to systematically document the importance of services and identify trends in their use and status over time for the main terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems in Europe. The results from this review show that intensively managed ecosystems contribute mostly to vital provisioning services (e.g. agro-ecosystems provide food via crops and livestock, and forests provide wood), while semi-natural ecosystems (e.g. grasslands and mountains) are key contributors of genetic resources and cultural services (e.g. aesthetic values and sense of place). The most recent European trends in human use of services show increases in demand for crops from agro-ecosystems, timber from forests, water flow regulation from rivers, wetlands and mountains, and recreation and ecotourism in most ecosystems, but decreases in livestock production, freshwater capture fisheries, wild foods and virtually all services associated with ecosystems which have considerably decreased in area (e.g. semi-natural grasslands). The condition of the majority of services show either a degraded or mixed status across Europe with the exception of recent enhancements in timber production in forests and mountains, freshwater provision, water/erosion/natural hazard regulation and recreation/ecotourism in mountains, and climate regulation in forests. Key gaps in knowledge were evident for certain services across all ecosystems, including the provision of biochemicals and natural medicines, genetic resources and the regulating services of seed dispersal, pest/disease regulation and invasion resistance

    Field Evaluation Of Safety During Gestation And Horizontal Spread Of A Recombinant Differential Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (bohv-1) Vaccine

    Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) is recognized as a major cause of respiratory, reproductive disease and abortion in cattle. Vaccination is widely applied to minimize losses induced by BoHV-1 infections; however, vaccination of dams during pregnancy with modified live virus (MLV) vaccines has been occasionally associated to abortions. We have previously reported the development of a BoHV-1 recombinant virus, constructed with basis on a Brazilian BoHV-1 (Franco et al. 2002a) from which the gene coding for glycoprotein E (gE) was deleted (gE-) by genetic manipulation. Such recombinant has been previously evaluated in its potential as a differential vaccine (gE-vaccine) that allows differentiation between vaccinated and infected animals. Here, in the first part of the present study, the safety of the gE-vaccine during pregnancy was evaluated by the intramuscular inoculation of 107.4 tissue culture 50% infective doses (TCID50) of the virus into 22 pregnant dams (14 BoHV-1 seronegative; 8 seropositive), at different stages of gestation. Other 15 pregnant dams were kept as non-vaccinated controls. No abortions, stillbirths or fetal abnormalities were seen after vaccination. Seroconversion was observed in both groups of previously seronegative vaccinated animals. In the second part of the study, the potential of the gE-vaccine virus to spread among beef cattle under field conditions was examined. Four heifers were inoculated intranasally with a larger amount (107.6TCID50) of the gE-vaccine (to increase chances of transmission) and mixed with other sixteen animals at the same age and body condition, in the same grazing area, at a population density equal to the average cattle farming density within the region (one cattle head per 10,000 m2), for 180 days. All animals were monitored daily for clinical signs. Serum samples were collected on days 0, 30, 60 and 180 post-vaccination. Seroconversion was observed only in vaccinated heifers.
