A praxis and pedagogy, decoloniality can play a critical role in students’ understanding of systems of oppression and their role in creating systemic change. As decoloniality emphasizes the importance of undoing and unlearning, it is critical that a decolonial pedagogy (Buttaro, 2010; Lissovoy, 2010) provide students an opportunity to engage in these actions. One possibility that should be explored is how youth participatory action research projects-taught within a decolonial pedagogical curriculum- can be used in schools to enhance students’ understanding and commitment to the decolonial project (Cammarota, 2014, 2009; Morrell, 2008). Using autoethnography (Anzaldúa, 2002), the paper discusses the process that a group of Latinx high school students went through to create “Soy Yo” and draw upon decolonial theory to analyze how learning about decoloniality and YPAR led them to begin the process of decolonizing their school. The concludes with risks and rewards that these stakeholders encountered during this ongoing project

Low cost integration of IoT technologies for building automation

    Get PDF
Internet of Things (IoT) envisages a reality in which people and objects are interconnected in such a way that a series of services, previously unthinkable, become real. The impact of IoT technologies is already tangible in industry, particularly under the Industry 4.0 initiative, but yet far to be fully exploited in other areas, such as building automation. This paper highlights the importance of using IoT and other emergent technologies to develop building automation applications that serves as base in smart cities, particularly supporting the interoperability among home automation solutions provided by different manufacturers. For this purpose, a low cost IoT enabler solution for building automation is presented, based on the use of cyber-physical systems, as backbone to integrate different IoT technologies and building automation technologies. The proposed approach was successfully implemented in an open space laboratory.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Seaweeds are a source of natural antioxidants having potential application in oxidative stress and associated diseases. In this work, anti-atherogenic properties associated with the antioxidant activity from the hydrophilic extracts of Halimeda incrassata were studied. The phenolic content assessed inthe aqueous extract and fraction phenolic acids (FPA) was 0.13 ± 0.05 and 0.47 ± 0.09 mg of gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry seaweed, respectively. In DPPH?, radical scavenging assay fractions exhibited a dependent concentration. The seaweeds extract inhibited the desoxirribose oxidation in the presenceor absence of EDTA (IC50 = 1.91± 0.09 mg/mL) (IC50 = 2.95 ± 0.01 mg/mL). In vivo antioxidant properties of FPA-H.incrassata were investigated in rats with a CCl4-induced liver injury. Pre-treatment with H.incrassata led to approximately 50% reductions in liver TBARS levels. The treatment with H. incrassataFPA also increased the activity of the CAT enzyme, which in turn resulted in an enhanced antioxidantdefense. The expression of Catalase by PCR-RT technique demonstrated a higher gene expression when compared with that which was observed in the CCl 4-treated group. Antiatherogenic properties were studied in the inhibition of lipoprotein oxidation mediated by Cu2+ or HRP/H2O2, free radicalscavenging, and metal ion chelation, and it was dose dependent with a higher concentration needed for the aqueous extract than for the FPA fraction. Antioxidant activity was also improved in macrophages as evaluated in the cell supernatant (by TBARS formation); and by luminol enhanced chemiluminescence after cell activation with zymosan; and a degree of cell lipoperoxidation wasdecreased by the Halimeda incrassata extract. The results of this work add to the antioxidant potential of the seaweed for its application in oxidative stress associated conditions.Fil: Vidal-Novoa, Alexis. Universidad de la Habana. We surveyed the irewood consumption for energetic purposes from the oak forest of the Patios Altos and Canada villages in Encino-Santander. Tools used to collect data were: structured surveys, open interviews and participant observation to those families dependent upon forest resources. Twenty-one species for domestic use were recorded, from which seven were related to the oak forest. The most preferred and used tree species was the Oak (Quercus humboldtii Bonpl) followed by the Laurel (Morella pubescens (Humb. y Bonpl. ex Willd.) Wilbur). Results show that 98% of the population uses only irewood and irewood alternated with gas, which suggests the importance of irewood to the community. Firewood consumption per person is 3.6 ± 1.35 kg per day, while annual consumption of the whole group (54 families) is the 354.78 kg per year. This usage corresponds to native tree species (78.2%), native shrubs (12.4%) and exotics (9.3%). Firewood usage represents savings to local inhabitants, corresponding to 33% of their monthly earnings, approximately.

The current economic crisis affects the rate of creation of new mercantile societies debilitating the Spanish enterprises. The employee-owned companies have seen slowed down the rate of new constitutions, nevertheless, there are also other factors apart from the economic crisis that precipitated their declivity before the arrival of the crisis. In this work it is analyzed, on the one hand the existing relation between the creation of employee-owned companies and the number of members of an employee-owned company that have obtained the capitalisation of unemployment benefit, as well as the incidence that there could have had the different modifications that have been realised in the legislation of the capitalisation of unemployment benefit in the creation of new employee-owned companies. In addition, a comparative analysis of the alternatives is realised based on if they decide to be members of an employee-owned company, or selfemployed workers

One of the most obvious consequences was the democratization of information with the so-called citizen journalism. Anonymous persons who through their mobile and social networks can report what is happening in seconds and with just one click in their mobile phone. But after this step, we are seeing a new change, these media are also beginning to be used smartphones by the reporters themselves not only to inform through social networks but to do their work, photographers take photos with the mobile phone camera and journalists have live signals wit- hout help or another tool than their mobile phone. This allows cost savings to the environment and greater speed when reporting from anywhere of the planet so many media that are pointing to chan- ge the traditional tools for these new one

The Growth Pattern of Brazilian Canela-Preta Chickens with Different Plumages Reared in Two Rearing Systems

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Growth pattern is essential for economically efficient poultry production. In this study, we aimed to describe the growth curve of chickens of the Canela-Preta breed reared in two different rearing systems, considering their different plumage colors. Initially, 204 one-day-old male and female chicks were randomly distributed in confinement and semi-confinement (102 animals in each system) without separation by gender. The animals were individually identified by wing and foot plastic brands and were weighted every seven days. The body weight and age records were used to estimate the growth curves of the following factors using the Richards model: plumage color, gender, and rearing system. The likelihood ratio test was used to verify the equality of parameters and identify nonlinear models to compare the growth patterns of the evaluated groups. The growth pattern of Canela-Preta chickens changed as a function of gender, plumage color, and rearing system. Females with black plumage, black and gold hens, and males with black and white plumage showed greater sensitivity to changes in rearing systems. Within-breed selection strategies for specific colors can improve the use of growth pattern differences, improving production efficiency. Semi-confinement is suitable for rearing Canela-Preta chickens with any plumage color, as these animals meet the free-range poultry niche market requirements
