Differential tolerance of sugarcane cultivars to clomazone

    Get PDF
Weed control is one of the most relevant costs of sugarcane production. If weeds are not controlled at the right time, the productivity and longevity of sugarcane plantations are reduced. In this crop, chemical control is the most used method, since it is efficient and it has a lower cost. Differentiated tolerance of sugarcane cultivars to the herbicide clomazone has been observed in the fields. However, there is no scientific evidence of this effect on the productivity of crops. This study evaluated the effects of clomazone on three sugarcane cultivars (RB966928, RB93579 and RB867515). Herbicide application was performed 40 days after the emergence of sugarcane plants and 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the application, the toxicity caused by the herbicide in the culture was evaluated through grades ranging from 0 (no toxicity) to 100 (plant death). The harvest was performed 580 days after the herbicide application. On this occasion, the length and diameter of the stem, number of tillers, tons of stems per hectare, total soluble solids of the juice, sucrose of the juice, apparent purity of the juice, sugarcane fiber, reducing sugars and total recoverable sugars were evaluated. The differential tolerance among sugarcane cultivars in response to clomazone application in the early stages of crop development was confirmed. Nevertheless, in all cultivars, the symptoms of intoxication disappeared over time and did not reflect on crop productivity. It was concluded that plant control in the sugarcane crop with clomazone, following the recommendation of the manufacturer, does not interfere negatively in the growth, development and productivity of the crop.

A SIMPLE CAPACITANCE SENSOR FOR VOID FRACTION MEASUREMENT IN GAS-LIQUID TWO-PHASE FLOW

In this work we present a simple and inexpensive capacitance sensor for time averaging void fraction measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow, which was developed at Experimental Thermalhydraulics Laboratory in the Nuclear Engineering Institute, IEN/CNEN. The sensor is a non-invasive device causing no flow disturbances. It is formed by two parallel plates and four electronic circuits: a signal input circuit, an amplification circuit, a frequency generator, and a power supply circuit. The frequency generator applies a sinusoidal signal with appropriate frequency into the signal input circuit which converts the capacitance variation value (or void fraction) of the two-phase flow into a voltage signal that goes to the amplifier stage; the output signal of the amplifier stage will be an input to an analogical/digital converter, installed inside of a computer, and it will provide interpretation of the signal behavior. The capacitance sensor was calibrated by using a horizontal acrylic tube filled with a known volume of water

Spatial Correlation Of Productive Component For Peach Palm Crop And Some Physical Attributes Of Eutrochrept Soil

Currently, Brazil sells around 300 million dollars per year of peach palms (Bactris gasipaes), wherein this country is responsible for being the largest worldwide producer, exporter and consumer. In crop year of 2014, productive components of peach palms were analyzed according to soil physical properties in Registro, SP, Brazil. The objectives were to evaluate the variability of the soil attributes and define a linear and spatial correlation between the crop productive components and the soil physical properties. Geostatistical grid was installed to collect data from soil and plant, with 54 sampling points in a total area of approximately 10,000 m2. With regard to linear point of view, stem diameter and palm height was explained by direct and exponential potential model, which was highly significant due to mechanical resistance to penetration.11316317

The effect of pH on the simultaneous determination of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim by Ultraviolet Spectrophotometry and Multivariate Calibration

Analytical techniques based on Ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry are widely used in pharmaceutical analysis, because they are simple and inexpensive. The choice of pH is critical in the development of univariate methods for pharmaceutical quantitation by UV spectrophotometry since changes may modify the absorption spectrum profile. Similar to univariate methods by UV spectrophotometry changes in pH may influence the predictive ability of multivariate models, affecting the resultant analytical performance. We report herein on the influence of pH on the simultaneous determination of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) in tablets using UV spectrophotometry and multivariate calibration. Data were recorded using a UV spectrophotometer in the wavelength range of 200 to 350 nm. The experimental matrix was constructed using 36 synthetic samples of SMZ-TMP mixtures. The concentration ranges used for the investigation were 14.0 to 26.0 mg L-1 for SMZ and 2.8 to 5.2 mg L-1 for TMP. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression models were generated with full-spectrum and multiple pH levels. At pH 4.3, lower values of relative standard error of prediction (RSEP %) for SMZ (1.83) and TMP (1.13) were obtained. The PLS model at pH 4.3 was used for the quantification of real samples (tablets obtained from 13 different manufacturers) and the results were compared with conventional procedures using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

First principles studies of a Xe atom adsorbed on Nb(110) surface

We study adsorption sites of a single Xe adatom on Nb(110) surface using a density functional theory approach: The on-top site is the most favorable position for the adsorption. We compare the binding features of the present study to earlier studies of a Xe adatom on close-packed (111) surface of face-centered cubic metals. The different features are attributed through a microscopic picture to the less than half filled d-states in Nb.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
