    Prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Nepal: a systematic review and meta-analysis from 2000 to 2014

    Background: Understanding the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Nepal can help in planning for health services and recognising risk factors. This review aims to systematically identify and collate studies describing the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, to summarise the findings, and to explore selected factors that may influence prevalence estimates. Design: This systematic review was conducted in adherence to the MOOSE Guidelines for Meta-Analysis and Systematic Reviews of Observational Studies. Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLINE) database from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2014 was searched for the prevalence of type 2 diabetes among Nepalese populations with a combination of search terms. We exploded the search terms to include all possible synonyms and spellings obtained in the search strategy. Additionally, we performed a manual search for other articles and references of published articles. Results: We found 65 articles; ten studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the analyses. These ten studies comprised a total of 30,218 subjects. The sample size ranged from 489 to 14,009. All the studies used participants older than age 15, of whom 41.5% were male and 58.5% female. All the studies were cross-sectional and two were hospital-based. Prevalence of type 2 diabetes ranged from a minimum of 1.4% to a maximum of 19.0% and pooled prevalence of type 2 diabetes was 8.4% (95% CI: 6.2 10.5%). Prevalence of type 2 diabetes in urban and rural populations was 8.1% (95% CI: 7.3 8.9%) and 1.0% (95% CI: 0.7 1.3%), respectively. Conclusions: This is, to our knowledge, the first study to systematically evaluate the literature of prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Nepal. Results showed that type 2 diabetes is currently a high-burden disease in Nepal, suggesting a possible area to deliberately expand preventive interventions as well as efforts to control the disease

    Phase Separation Based on U(1) Slave-boson Functional Integral Approach to the t-J Model

    We investigate the phase diagram of phase separation for the hole-doped two dimensional system of antiferromagnetically correlated electrons based on the U(1) slave-boson functional integral approach to the t-J model. We show that the phase separation occurs for all values of J/t, that is, whether 0<J/t<10 < J/t < 1 or J/t1J/t \geq 1 with J, the Heisenberg coupling constant and t, the hopping strength. This is consistent with other numerical studies of hole-doped two dimensional antiferromagnets. The phase separation in the physically interesting J region, 0<J/t0.40 < J/t \lesssim 0.4 is examined by introducing hole-hole (holon-holon) repulsive interaction. We find from this study that with high repulsive interaction between holes the phase separation boundary tends to remain robust in this low JJ region, while in the high J region, J/t > 0.4, the phase separation boundary tends to disappear.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.     Two temperature viscous accretion flows around rotating black holes: Description of under-fed systems to ultra-luminous X-ray sources

    We discuss two temperature accretion disk flows around rotating black holes. As we know that to explain observed hard X-rays the choice of Keplerian angular momentum profile is not unique, we consider the sub-Keplerian regime of the disk. Without any strict knowledge of the magnetic field structure, we assume the cooling mechanism is dominated by bremsstrahlung process. We show that in a range of Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter 0.2\gsim\alpha\gsim0.0005, flow behavior varies widely, particularly by means of the size of disk, efficiency of cooling and corresponding temperatures of ions and electrons. We also show that the disk around a rotating black hole is hotter compared to that around a Schwarzschild black hole, rendering a larger difference between ion and electron temperatures in the former case. With all the theoretical solutions in hand, finally we reproduce the observed luminosities (LL) of two extreme cases -- the under-fed AGNs and quasars (e.g. Sgr AA^*) with L\gsim 10^{33} erg/sec to ultra-luminous X-ray sources with L1041L\sim 10^{41} erg/sec, at different combinations of mass accretion rate, ratio of specific heats, Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter and Kerr parameter, and conclude that Sgr AA^* may be an intermediate spinning black hole.Comment: 21 pages including 5 figures; few typos corrected; to appear in New Astronom

    On Some Inequalities Involving Harmonic Mean and Moments

    We derive bounds on the second order moment of a random variable in terms of its arithmetic and harmonic means. Both discrete and continuous cases are considered and it is shown that the present bounds provide refinements of the bounds which exist in literature. As an application we obtain a lower bound for the spread of a positive definite matrix A in terms of traces of A, A-1 and A2. Our results compare favourably with those obtained by Wolkowicz and Styan (Bounds for eigenvalues using traces, Lin. Alg. Appl. 29, 471-506, 1980)

    Effect of an extract of Centella asiatica on the biodistribution of sodium pertechnetate (Na<sup>99m</sup>TcO<sub>4</sub>) and on the fixation of radioactivity on blood constituents

    This study evaluates the effects of an acute treatment with a Centella asiatica (CA) extract on the biodistribution of the radiopharmaceutical Na99mTcO4 and on the fixation of technetium-99m on blood constituents. Wistar rats were treated with CA extract and, 1 hour after, Na99mTcO4 was administered; organs/tissues were withdrawn and weighted. The radioactivity was counted to calculate the percentage of activity per gram (%ATI/g). Also, blood samples were withdrawn, plasma (P), blood cells (BC), insoluble fraction (IF) and soluble fractions of P and BC were isolated and the radioactivity was counted to calculate the percentage of activity (%ATI). Data indicated that the acute treatment with CA extract changed significantly (p99mTcO4 and the fixation of the technetium-99m on blood constituents in an acute treatment

    Abscisic acid analogues for enhanced stress tolerance and size control of tomato seedlings

    Non-Peer ReviewedTransplanting shock is a common problem during establishment of horticultural crops like vegetables and ornamental bedding plants. The marketing period of nursery raised seedlings is limited due to the loss of aesthetic quality associated with undesirable growth and accelerated moisture loss during storage and handling. Two synthetic analogues (PBI 365 and PBI 429) of the plant hormone abscisic acid (S. Abrams PBI/NRC) were evaluated in a number of greenhouses and field trials at the University of Saskatchewan, for their potential to alter the stress tolerance and growth of horticultural crops. Pre-planting application of analogues, at 10-4 M, enhanced the tomato transplants survival under moisture stress in field conditions. Under greenhouse conditions, the ABA analogues slowed the moisture use and growth of seedlings without deteriorating the visual quality. Thus, ABA analogues could be used in horticultural crops for enhanced stand establishment as well as to hold seedlings at a particular stage thereby allowing their storage and extending the marketing period

    Asteroseismology of red giants & galactic archaeology

    Red-giant stars are low- to intermediate-mass (M10M \lesssim 10~M_{\odot}) stars that have exhausted hydrogen in the core. These extended, cool and hence red stars are key targets for stellar evolution studies as well as galactic studies for several reasons: a) many stars go through a red-giant phase; b) red giants are intrinsically bright; c) large stellar internal structure changes as well as changes in surface chemical abundances take place over relatively short time; d) red-giant stars exhibit global intrinsic oscillations. Due to their large number and intrinsic brightness it is possible to observe many of these stars up to large distances. Furthermore, the global intrinsic oscillations provide a means to discern red-giant stars in the pre-helium core burning from the ones in the helium core burning phase and provide an estimate of stellar ages, a key ingredient for galactic studies. In this lecture I will first discuss some physical phenomena that play a role in red-giant stars and several phases of red-giant evolution. Then, I will provide some details about asteroseismology -- the study of the internal structure of stars through their intrinsic oscillations -- of red-giant stars.     Space-time inhomogeneity, anisotropy and gravitational collapse

    We investigate the evolution of non-adiabatic collapse of a shear-free spherically symmetric stellar configuration with anisotropic stresses accompanied with radial heat flux. The collapse begins from a curvature singularity with infinite mass and size on an inhomogeneous space-time background. The collapse is found to proceed without formation of an even horizon to singularity when the collapsing configuration radiates all its mass energy.
