(In)Consistencies in responses to sodium bicarbonate supplementation: a randomised, repeated measures, counterbalanced and double-blind study
Objectives:
Intervention studies do not account for high within-individual variation potentially compromising the magnitude of an effect. Repeat administration of a treatment allows quantification of individual responses and determination of the consistency of responses. We determined the consistency of metabolic and exercise responses following repeated administration of sodium bicarbonate (SB).
Design and Methods:
15 physically active males (age 25 ± 4 y; body mass 76.0 ± 7.3 kg; height 1.77 ± 0.05 m) completed six cycling capacity tests at 110% of maximum power output (CCT 110% ) following ingestion of either 0.3 g.kg -1 BM of SB (4 trials) or placebo (PL, 2 trials). Blood pH, bicarbonate, base excess and lactate were determined at baseline, pre-exercise, post-exercise and 5-min post-exercise. Total work done (TWD) was recorded as the exercise outcome.
Results:
SB supplementation increased blood pH, bicarbonate and base excess prior to every trial (all p ≤0.001); absolute changes in pH, bicarbonate and base excess from baseline to pre-exercise were similar in all SB trials (all p > 0.05). Blood lactate was elevated following exercise in all trials (p ≤ 0.001), and was higher in some, but not all, SB trials compared to PL. TWD was not significantly improved with SB vs. PL in any trial (SB1: +3.6%; SB2 +0.3%; SB3: +2.1%; SB4: +6.7%; all p > 0.05), although magnitude-based inferences suggested a 93% likely improvement in SB4. Individual analysis showed ten participants improved in at least one SB trial above the normal variation of the test although five improved in none.
Conclusions:
The mechanism for improved exercise with SB was consistently in place prior to exercise, although this only resulted in a likely improvement in one trial. SB does not consistently improve high intensity cycling capacity, with results suggesting that caution should be taken when interpreting the results from single trials as to the efficacy of SB supplementation.

Kinematics of the Local Universe XIII. 21-cm line measurements of 452 galaxies with the Nan\c{c}ay radiotelescope, JHK Tully-Fisher relation and preliminary maps of the peculiar velocity field
This paper presents 452 new 21-cm neutral hydrogen line measurements carried
out with the FORT receiver of the meridian transit Nan\c{c}ay radiotelescope
(NRT) in the period April 2003 -- March 2005. This observational programme is
part of a larger project aiming at collecting an exhaustive and
magnitude-complete HI extragalactic catalogue for Tully-Fisher applications
(the so-called KLUN project, for Kinematics of the Local Universe studies, end
in 2008). The whole on-line HI archive of the NRT contains today reduced
HI-profiles for ~4500 spiral galaxies of declination delta > -40°
(http://klun.obs-nancay.fr). As an example of application, we use direct
Tully-Fisher relation in three (JHK) bands in deriving distances to a large
catalog of 3126 spiral galaxies distributed through the whole sky and sampling
well the radial velocity range between 0 and 8000 km/s. Thanks to an iterative
method accounting for selection bias and smoothing effects, we show as a
preliminary output a detailed and original map of the velocity field in the
Local Universe
Classical field theory on Lie algebroids: Variational aspects
The variational formalism for classical field theories is extended to the
setting of Lie algebroids. Given a Lagrangian function we study the problem of
finding critical points of the action functional when we restrict the fields to
be morphisms of Lie algebroids. In addition to the standard case, our formalism
includes as particular examples the case of systems with symmetry (covariant
Euler-Poincare and Lagrange Poincare cases), Sigma models or Chern-Simons

Toward High-Precision Measures of Large-Scale Structure
I review some results of estimation of the power spectrum of density
fluctuations from galaxy redshift surveys and discuss advances that may be
possible with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I then examine the realities of
power spectrum estimation in the presence of Galactic extinction, photometric
errors, galaxy evolution, clustering evolution, and uncertainty about the

A Cosmological Framework for the Co-Evolution of Quasars, Supermassive Black Holes, and Elliptical Galaxies: I. Galaxy Mergers & Quasar Activity
(Abridged) We develop a model for the cosmological role of mergers in the
evolution of starbursts, quasars, and spheroidal galaxies. Combining halo mass
functions (MFs) with empirical halo occupation models, we calculate where major
galaxy-galaxy mergers occur and what kinds of galaxies merge, at all redshifts.
We compare with observed merger MFs, clustering, fractions, and small-scale
environments, and show that this yields robust estimates in good agreement with
observations. Making the simple ansatz that major, gas-rich mergers cause
quasar activity, we demonstrate that this naturally reproduces the observed
rise and fall of the quasar luminosity density from z=0-6, as well as quasar
LFs, fractions, host galaxy colors, and clustering as a function of redshift
and luminosity. The observed excess of quasar clustering on small scales is a
natural prediction of the model, as mergers preferentially occur in regions
with excess small-scale galaxy overdensities. We show that quasar environments
at all observed redshifts correspond closely to the empirically determined
small group scale, where mergers of gas-rich galaxies are most efficient. We
contrast with a secular model in which quasar activity is driven by bars/disk
instabilities, and show that while these modes probably dominate at Seyfert
luminosities, the constraints from clustering (large and small-scale),
pseudobulge populations, disk MFs, luminosity density evolution, and host
galaxy colors argue that they must be a small contributor to the z>1 quasar

Dispelling the myth that habitual caffeine consumption influences the performance response to acute caffeine supplementation
Objective:
To investigate the influence of habitual caffeine intake on aerobic exercise performance responses to acute caffeine supplementation.
Methods:
A double-blind, crossover, counterbalanced study was performed. Forty male endurance-trained cyclists were allocated into tertiles according to their daily caffeine intake: low (58 ± 29 mg.d-1), moderate (143 ± 25 mg.d-1), and high consumers (351 ± 139 mg.d-1). Participants completed three trials in which they performed simulated cycling time-trials in the fastest time possible following
ingestion of: caffeine (CAF: 6 mg.kg-1 BM), placebo (PLA), and no supplement (CON).
Results:
Mixed-model analysis revealed time-trial performance was significantly improved in CAF compared to PLA and CON
(29.92±2.18 min vs 30.81±2.67 and 31.14±2.71 min; P = 0.05). Blood lactate and ratings of
perceived exertion were not different between trials and tertiles (P>0.05).
Conclusion:
Performance effects of acute caffeine supplementation during a ~30 min cycling TT performance were not influenced by the level of habitual caffeine consumption
A comparison of the galaxy peculiar velocity field with the PSCz gravity field-- A Bayesian hyper-parameter method
We constructed a Bayesian hyper-parameter statistical method to quantify the
difference between predicted velocities derived from the observed galaxy
distribution in the \textit{IRAS}-PSC redshift survey and peculiar
velocities measured using different distance indicators. In our analysis we
find that the model--data comparison becomes unreliable beyond 70 \hmpc
because of the inadequate sampling by \textit{IRAS} survey of prominent,
distant superclusters, like the Shapley Concentration. On the other hand, the
analysis of the velocity residuals show that the PSC gravity field provides
an adequate model to the local, \le 70 \hmpc, peculiar velocity field. The
hyper-parameter combination of ENEAR, SN, A1SN and SFI++ catalogues in the
Bayesian framework constrains the amplitude of the linear flow to be
. For an rms density fluctuations in the PSC galaxy
number density , we obtain an estimate of the
growth rate of density fluctuations ,

Keele Aches and Pains Study Protocol: validity, acceptability and feasibility of the Keele STarT MSK Tool for subgrouping musculoskeletal patients in primary care
Musculoskeletal conditions represent a considerable burden worldwide, and are predominantly managed in primary care. Evidence suggests that many musculoskeletal conditions share similar prognostic factors. Systematically assessing patient’s prognosis, and matching treatments based on prognostic subgroups (stratified care), has been shown to be clinically and cost effective. This study (Keele Aches and Pains Study: KAPS) aims to refine and examine the validity of a brief questionnaire (Keele STarT MSK Tool), designed to enable risk-stratification of primary care patients with the five most common musculoskeletal pain presentations. We will also describe the subgroups of patients, and explore the acceptability and feasibility of using the tool, and how the tool is best implemented in clinical practice. The study design is mixed methods: a prospective, quantitative observational cohort study with a linked qualitative focus group and interview study. Patients who have consulted their General Practitioner or Healthcare Practitioner (GP/HCP) about a relevant musculoskeletal condition will be recruited from General practice. Participating patients will complete a baseline questionnaire (shortly after consultation), plus questionnaires 2 and 6 months later. A sub-sample of patients, along with participating GPs and HCPs, will be invited to take part in qualitative focus groups and interviews. The Keele STarT MSK Tool will be refined based on face, discriminant, construct and predictive validity at baseline and 2 months, and validated using data from 6 month follow-up. Patient and clinician perspectives about using the tool will be explored. This study will provide a validated prognostic tool (the Keele STarT MSK Tool) with established cut-points to stratify patients with the five most common musculoskeletal presentations into low, medium and high risk subgroups. The qualitative analysis of patient and healthcare perspectives will inform how to embed the tool into clinical practice using established general practice IT systems and clinician support packages

Positive and negative well-being and objectively measured sedentary behaviour in older adults: evidence from three cohorts
Background:
Sedentary behaviour is related to poorer health independently of time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity. The aim of this study was to investigate whether wellbeing or symptoms of anxiety or depression predict sedentary behaviour in older adults.
Method:
Participants were drawn from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 (LBC1936) (n = 271), and the West of Scotland Twenty-07 1950s (n = 309) and 1930s (n = 118) cohorts. Sedentary outcomes, sedentary time, and number of sit-to-stand transitions, were measured with a three-dimensional accelerometer (activPAL activity monitor) worn for 7 days. In the Twenty-07 cohorts, symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed in 2008 and sedentary outcomes were assessed ~ 8 years later in 2015 and 2016. In the LBC1936 cohort, wellbeing and symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed concurrently with sedentary behaviour in 2015 and 2016. We tested for an association between wellbeing, anxiety or depression and the sedentary outcomes using multivariate regression analysis.
Results:
We observed no association between wellbeing or symptoms of anxiety and the sedentary outcomes. Symptoms of depression were positively associated with sedentary time in the LBC1936 and Twenty-07 1950s cohort, and negatively associated with number of sit-to-stand transitions in the LBC1936. Meta-analytic estimates of the association between depressive symptoms and sedentary time or number of sit-to-stand transitions, adjusted for age, sex, BMI, long-standing illness, and education, were β = 0.11 (95% CI = 0.03, 0.18) and β = − 0.11 (95% CI = − 0.19, −0.03) respectively.
Conclusion:
Our findings indicate that depressive symptoms are positively associated with sedentary behavior. Future studies should investigate the causal direction of this association
