The species of the genus Lutzomyia França are transmitters of the cutaneous leishmaniasis and mucocutaneous in Panama. His distribution is related to the incidence of cases in rural adjacent places to forest, nevertheless the presence of the vectors can register in some areas, without it precence of cases of the illness. This study realized in the localities of Gamboa, Altos de Campana and AltoChagres, during the year 2000 to 2001 in tropical forest in Panamá. The specimens were captured by CDC trap and moved to the Commemorative Institute Gorgas where there were realized the identifications of the species and the count of the number of individuals. There were captured 8,213 individuals of the genus Lutzomyia, L. ylephiletor (Fairchild & Hertig) (1097 individuals), followed by L.carpenteri (Fairchild & Hertig) (610 individuals), and L. dysponeta (Fairchild & Hertig ) (595 individuals). The analysis Correspondence in species of Lutzomyia was related to the types of forests of the areas. In the similarity between three area the results showed that the composition of species of Phlebotominae is presented by Altos de Campana and Alto Chagres SSo= 0.503. The investigation has allowed updating the information of some genera and species of medical interesting in the studied area, with the intention of taking preventive measures and of control to avoid the proliferation of the Leishmaniasis in these areas.

Post-partum anestrus is a problem on farms, and its duration depends on the frequency and intensity of suckling which affects reproduction and production efficiency to become a determining economic factor. The aim of this study was to determine the post-partum reproductive response in ewe to a "male effect" with an ovulation induction protocol of five days using progesterone and the application of a metabolic restorative (MR; Metabolase ®). One hundred and twenty females were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: T1: Continuous suckling (CS; n = 29), T2: CS + MR (n = 29), T3: CS + Male Effect (ME; n = 32), and T4: CS + MR + ME. The percentage of females in ovulation, weight changes among females and lambs, the onset of estrus, calving, fecundity, and prolificacy were also determined. The ovulation percentage was higher in CS + ME and CS + MR + ME (75.0 and 73.3%) than in the other treatments. Weight changes in females and lambs were different among periods. The onset of estrus was similar for CS and CS + MR (25.9 ± 1.9 and 25.7 ± 0.7 h, respectively). The calving percentage was higher for CS + MR (86.2%) than other treatments. Male presence positively affected the postpartum cyclic ovarian re-establishment and the metabolic restorative could even improve the fertility of hair ewes in continuous suckling with similar hormone protocolKeywords: Male effect, metabolic stimulation, post-partum anestru

University Libraries and its Role in Undergraduate Students Learning: The Challenge of Listening to All Voices

Undergraduate students are usually the largest populations in higher education institutions. More information about qualitative aspects of learning practices and deeper knowledge about student needs is necessary to understand and promote a more implicated role of libraries in undergraduate student learning. This project is developed by researchers from two private universities libraries in Mexico: Biblioteca Francisco Xavier Clavigero, Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México, and Bibllioteca Dr. Jorge Villalobos Padilla, S.J., Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO), Guadalajara. The research methodology is mixed. After analysis and discussion of initial data some student’s characteristics were established as diversity markers which we expect will facilitate to select students for deep interview in order to listen the variety of undergraduate voices, analyze them and eventually guide the design of new library spaces, collections and services We expect also that the methodology developed will help to approach in detail other diverse user groups.ITESO, A.C

The general bacterial microbiota of the soft tick Ornithodoros turicata found on Bolson tortoises (Gopherus flavomarginatus) were analyzed using next generation sequencing. The main aims of the study were to establish the relative abundance of bacterial taxa in the tick, and to document the presence of potentially pathogenic species for this tortoise, other animals, and humans. The study was carried-out in the Mapimi Biosphere Reserve in the northern-arid part of Mexico. Bolson tortoises (n = 45) were inspected for the presence of soft ticks, from which 11 tortoises (24.4%) had ticks in low loads (1–3 ticks per individual). Tick pools (five adult ticks each) were analyzed through 16S rRNA V3–V4 region amplification in a MiSeq Illumina, using EzBioCloud as a taxonomical reference. The operational taxonomic units (OTUs) revealed 28 phyla, 84 classes, 165 orders, 342 families, 1013 genera, and 1326 species. The high number of taxa registered for O. turicata may be the result of the variety of hosts that this tick parasitizes as they live inside G. flavomarginatus burrows. While the most abundant phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes, the most abundant species were two endosymbionts of ticks (Midichloria-like and Coxiella-like). Two bacteria documented as pathogenic to Gopherus spp. were registered (Mycoplasma spp. and Pasteurella testudinis). The bovine and ovine tick-borne pathogens A. marginale and A. ovis, respectively, were recorded, as well as the zoonotic bacteria A. phagocytophilum,Coxiella burnetii, and Neoehrlichia sp. Tortoises parasitized with O. turicata did not show evident signs of disease, which could indicate a possible ecological role as a reservoir that has yet to be demonstrated. In fact, the defense mechanisms of this tortoise against the microorganisms transmitted by ticks during their feeding process are still unknown. Future studies on soft ticks should expand our knowledge about what components of the microbiota are notable across multiple host–microbe dynamics. Likewise, studies are required to better understand the host competence of this tortoise, considered the largest terrestrial reptile in North America distributed throughout the Chihuahuan Desert since the late Pleistocene

    Get PDF

The therapeutic potential of wogonin observed in preclinical studies

    Get PDF
Wogonin is a flavonoid found in different plants such as roots of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi distributed mainly in Asia and Europe. Dried root extracts of S. baicalensis with high content of wogonin, popularly known as "Huang-Qin" or Chinese or baical skullcap, have been used for long time in traditional Chinese medicine. Several health benefits are attributed to wogonin and derivatives showing anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anticancer, and antioxidant effects and more recently antineurodegenerative properties. Preclinical pharmacological activities of wogonin against diverse types of cancer such as breast, colorectal, and human gastric cancer will be presented in this review. In addition, studies on oxidative stress and bioavailability of wogonin will be discussed together with antineurodegenerative potential with special focus on Alzheimer's disease. Outcomes extracted from the last preclinical studies related to therapeutic applications of wogonin will be commented and updated in this review. The scientific evidence collected in this review aims to encourage transfer of the preclinical evidence of wogonin to new clinical studies.CONICYT PIA/APOYO CCTE: AFB170007info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
