    Past Meets Present: Margaret Mead as a Case Study Discussion of Public Pedagogy and Public Scholarship

    This roundtable aims to present and to create audience discussion of preliminary data categories from an ongoing historical project with implications for contemporary adult education practice. In this case, the researchers analyzed the work of Dr. Margaret Mead, a cultural anthropologist. Dr. Mead was outspoken about the need for all adults to become lifelong learners and of the corresponding responsibility of academics to freely discuss their work and thoughts in public forums in order to stimulate well-informed interest in community, family, and political issues. In fact, in additional to scholarly works, she wrote public essays, editorials, appeared in documentaries, and delivered speeches asking questions about, ―Who is an adult? How do adults learn? How can we create op portunities for everyone who wishes to participate in shaping our communities?‖ Her public addresses frequently raised questions about the issues of difference and inclusion, of civic participation and activism, attitudes towards democracy and public authority, and the pressures of conforming to societal ideas of ̳what is normal‘, ethical applications of scientific advancement, of relationships and family, and of living in a time of international political tensions.     Conspicuous by its absence: Domestic violence intervention in South African pre-hospital emergency care

    Domestic violence (DV) is common globally. In South Africa, emergency care providers (ECPs) lack a clear policy framework and the necessary training to identify DV and intervene when it is encountered. We investigate the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of ECPs towards DV, and identify factors affecting early identification and its appropriate management in South Africa. A survey of 154/266 registered operational ECPs of different qualification levels and employed by a provincial emergency medical service was conducted. Each participant voluntarily and anonymously self-completed a customised questionnaire. Some 75 (49%) ECPs had an acceptable understanding of DV, although those with higher level qualifications were significantly more knowledgeable (p = 0.017). Most (147,97%) identified that alcohol and drugs were the main cause of DV. A few ECPs (15, 10%) reported having had experience of safety-focused and appropriate gender-sensitive handling of DV victims. The ECPs’ qualification levels were not significantly associated with their knowledge of the legislation about DV or with whether they had referred victims of DV. Only 49 (22%) ECPs reported having occasionally referred victims. By their own admission these ECPs expressed inadequate ability to assess and manage DV cases in current ECP practices. There was poor understanding of the extent, nature, detection and referral of DV cases by ECPs relative to their incidence. This may be due to incorrect beliefs or myths about DV, inadequate training and problematic emergency system design. Our findings support the need for a comprehensive emergency care response to guide and standardise DV management with better understanding of gender-based violence in order for the emergency medical service to play a more preventive and holistic role in its responses.Keywords: Emergency care provider, domestic violence, crisis intervention, universal/selective screening, clinical case finding, emergency medical servic

In silmutan, the correlation between liquidity and quality of asset to Capital Adequacy Ratio is correlated positively significant. This research used purposive sample method. The data that needed to calculate the asset quality is using financial ratios. Troubled Assets (KAP). While the data used to calculate the level of liquidity is using financial ratios. Financing Deposit Ratio (FDR). These data were acquired from the 2012 financial statements of Islamic Rural Bank in Indonesia, in the publication through the website of Bank Indonesia. In this research, the sample used are 32 Islamic Rural Bank in Indonesia. Normality test results were calculated with SPSS shows that all of the variables above 0.05, it can be said that is a normal distribution. Then the significance test of FDR is 2.225 and KAP is -2,381 with 2,042 t of table, so the data is correlated significant

    Experimental Control and Characterization of Autophagy in Drosophila

    Insects such as the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, which fundamentally reorganize their body plan during metamorphosis, make extensive use of autophagy for their normal development and physiology. In the fruit fly, the hepatic/adipose organ known as the fat body accumulates nutrient stores during the larval feeding stage. Upon entering metamorphosis, as well as in response to starvation, these nutrients are mobilized through a massive induction of autophagy, providing support to other tissues and organs during periods of nutrient deprivation. High levels of autophagy are also observed in larval tissues destined for elimination, such as the salivary glands and larval gut. Drosophila is emerging as an important system for studying the functions and regulation of autophagy in an in vivo setting. In this chapter we describe reagents and methods for monitoring autophagy in Drosophila, focusing on the larval fat body. We also describe methods for experimentally activating and inhibiting autophagy in this system and discuss the potential for genetic analysis in Drosophila to identify novel genes involved in autophagy

    NaIrO3 - A pentavalent post-perovskite

    Sodium iridium(V) oxide, NaIrO3, was synthesized by a high pressure solid state method and recovered to ambient conditions. It is found to be isostructural with CaIrO3, the much-studied structural analogue of the high-pressure post-perovskite phase of MgSiO3. Among the oxide post-perovskites, NaIrO3 is the first example with a pentavalent cation. The structure consists of layers of corner- and edge-sharing IrO6 octahedra separated by layers of NaO8 bicapped trigonal prisms. NaIrO3 shows no magnetic ordering and resistivity measurements show non-metallic behavior. The crystal structure, electrical and magnetic properties are discussed and compared to known post-perovskites and pentavalent perovskite metal oxides.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures.     On the structure and evolution of a polar crown prominence/filament system

    Polar crown prominences are made of chromospheric plasma partially circling the Suns poles between 60 and 70 degree latitude. We aim to diagnose the 3D dynamics of a polar crown prominence using high cadence EUV images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/AIA at 304 and 171A and the Ahead spacecraft of the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO-A)/EUVI at 195A. Using time series across specific structures we compare flows across the disk in 195A with the prominence dynamics seen on the limb. The densest prominence material forms vertical columns which are separated by many tens of Mm and connected by dynamic bridges of plasma that are clearly visible in 304/171A two-color images. We also observe intermittent but repetitious flows with velocity 15 km/s in the prominence that appear to be associated with EUV bright points on the solar disk. The boundary between the prominence and the overlying cavity appears as a sharp edge. We discuss the structure of the coronal cavity seen both above and around the prominence. SDO/HMI and GONG magnetograms are used to infer the underlying magnetic topology.     Properties of pattern formation and selection processes in nonequilibrium systems with external fluctuations

    We extend the phase field crystal method for nonequilibrium patterning to stochastic systems with external source where transient dynamics is essential. It was shown that at short time scales the system manifests pattern selection processes. These processes are studied by means of the structure function dynamics analysis.
