Linkage mapping reveals sex-dimorphic map distances in a passerine bird
Linkage maps are lacking for many highly influential model organisms in evolutionary research, including all passerine birds. Consequently, their full potential as research models is severely hampered. Here, we provide a partial linkage map and give novel estimates of sex-specific recombination rates in a passerine bird, the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus). Linkage analysis of genotypic data at 51 autosomal microsatellites and seven markers on the Z-chromosome (one of the sex chromosomes) from an extended pedigree resulted in 12 linkage groups with 2â8 loci. A striking feature of the map was the pronounced sex-dimorphism: males had a substantially lower recombination rate than females, which resulted in a suppressed autosomal map in males (sum of linkage groups: 110.2cM) compared to females (237.2cM; female/male map ratio: 2.15). The sex-specific recombination rates will facilitate the building of a denser linkage map and cast light on hypotheses about sex-specific recombination rates
Recurrence plot statistics and the effect of embedding
Recurrence plots provide a graphical representation of the recurrent patterns
in a timeseries, the quantification of which is a relatively new field. Here we
derive analytical expressions which relate the values of key statistics,
notably determinism and entropy of line length distribution, to the correlation
sum as a function of embedding dimension. These expressions are obtained by
deriving the transformation which generates an embedded recurrence plot from an
unembedded plot. A single unembedded recurrence plot thus provides the
statistics of all possible embedded recurrence plots. If the correlation sum
scales exponentially with embedding dimension, we show that these statistics
are determined entirely by the exponent of the exponential. This explains the
results of Iwanski and Bradley (Chaos 8 [1998] 861-871) who found that certain
recurrence plot statistics are apparently invariant to embedding dimension for
certain low-dimensional systems. We also examine the relationship between the
mutual information content of two timeseries and the common recurrent structure
seen in their recurrence plots. This allows time-localized contributions to
mutual information to be visualized. This technique is demonstrated using
geomagnetic index data; we show that the AU and AL geomagnetic indices share
half their information, and find the timescale on which mutual features appear
A CsI(Tl) Scintillating Crystal Detector for the Studies of Low Energy Neutrino Interactions
Scintillating crystal detector may offer some potential advantages in the
low-energy, low-background experiments. A 500 kg CsI(Tl) detector to be placed
near the core of Nuclear Power Station II in Taiwan is being constructed for
the studies of electron-neutrino scatterings and other keV-MeV range neutrino
interactions. The motivations of this detector approach, the physics to be
addressed, the basic experimental design, and the characteristic performance of
prototype modules are described. The expected background channels and their

Innovation is key in almost any strategy for competitiveness in existing markets, for creating new markets, or for curbing rising public expenses, and software intensive systems are core elements in most such strategies. Software innovation therefore is vital for about every sector of the economy. Changes in software technologies over the last decades have opened up for experimentation, learning, and flexibility in ongoing software projects, but how can this change be used to facilitate software innovation? How can a team systematically identify and pursue opportunities to create added value in ongoing projects? In this paper, we describe Deweyan pragmatism as the philosophical foundation for Essence â a software innovation methodology â where unknown options and needs emerge as part of the development process itself. The foundation is illustrated via a simple example
Primordial black holes in braneworld cosmologies: astrophysical constraints
In two recent papers we explored the modifications to primordial black hole
physics when one moves to the simplest braneworld model, Randall--Sundrum type
II. Both the evaporation law and the cosmological evolution of the population
can be modified, and additionally accretion of energy from the background can
be dominant over evaporation at high energies. In this paper we present a
detailed study of how this impacts upon various astrophysical constraints,
analyzing constraints from the present density, from the present high-energy
photon background radiation, from distortion of the microwave background
spectrum, and from processes affecting light element abundances both during and
after nucleosynthesis. Typically, the constraints on the formation rate of
primordial black holes weaken as compared to the standard cosmology if black
hole accretion is unimportant at high energies, but can be strengthened in the

Labour after Land Reform: The Precarious Livelihoods of Former Farmworkers in Zimbabwe
What happens to labour when major redistributive land reform restructures a system of settler colonial agriculture? This article examines the livelihoods of former farmworkers on largeâscale commercial farms who still live in farm compounds after Zimbabwe's land reform. Through a mix of surveys and inâdepth biographical interviews, four different types of livelihood are identified, centred on differences in land access. These show how diverse, but often precarious, livelihoods are being carved out, representing the âfragmented classes of labourâ in a restructured agrarian economy. The analysis highlights the tensions between gaining new freedoms, notably through access to land, and being subject to new livelihood vulnerabilities. The findings are discussed in relation to wider questions about the informalization of the economy and the role of labour and employment in a postâsettler agrarian economy, where the old âfarmworkerâ label no longer applies
Quantum Curves and D-Modules
In this article we continue our study of chiral fermions on a quantum curve.
This system is embedded in string theory as an I-brane configuration, which
consists of D4 and D6-branes intersecting along a holomorphic curve in a
complex surface, together with a B-field. Mathematically, it is described by a
holonomic D-module. Here we focus on spectral curves, which play a prominent
role in the theory of (quantum) integrable hierarchies. We show how to
associate a quantum state to the I-brane system, and subsequently how to
compute quantum invariants. As a first example, this yields an insightful
formulation of (double scaled as well as general Hermitian) matrix models.
Secondly, we formulate c=1 string theory in this language. Finally, our
formalism elegantly reconstructs the complete dual Nekrasov-Okounkov partition

The âmosaic habitatâ concept in human evolution: past and present
The habitats preferred by hominins and other species are an important theme in palaeoanthropology, and the âmosaic habitatâ (also referred to as habitat heterogeneity) has been a central concept in this regard for the last four decades. Here we explore the development of this concept â loosely defined as a range of different habitat types, such as woodlands, riverine forest and savannah within a limited spatial areaâ in studies of human evolution in the last sixty years or so. We outline the key developments that took place before and around the time when the term âmosaicâ came to wider palaeoanthropological attention. To achieve this we used an analysis of the published literature, a study of illustrations of hominin evolution from 1925 onwards and an email survey of senior researchers in palaeoanthropology and related fields. We found that the term mosaic starts to be applied in palaeoanthropological thinking during the 1970âs due to the work of a number of researchers, including Karl Butzer and Glynn Isaac , with the earliest usage we have found of âmosaicâ in specific reference to hominin habitats being by Adriaan Kortlandt (1972). While we observe a steady increase in the numbers of publications reporting mosaic palaeohabitats, in keeping with the growing interest and specialisation in various methods of palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, we also note that there is a lack of critical studies that define this habitat, or examine the temporal and spatial scales associated with it. The general consensus within the field is that the concept now requires more detailed definition and study to evaluate its role in human evolution

Genome-Wide Meta-Analyses of Smoking Behaviors in African Americans
The identification and exploration of genetic loci that influence smoking behaviors have been conducted primarily in populations of the European ancestry. Here we report results of the first genome-wide association study meta-analysis of smoking behavior in African Americans in the Study of Tobacco in Minority Populations Genetics Consortium (n=32 389). We identified one non-coding single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP; rs2036527[A]) on chromosome 15q25.1 associated with smoking quantity (cigarettes per day), which exceeded genome-wide significance (=0.040, s.e.=0.007, P=1.84 Ă 10). This variant is present in the 5âČ-distal enhancer region of the CHRNA5 gene and defines the primary index signal reported in studies of the European ancestry. No other SNP reached genome-wide significance for smoking initiation (SI, ever vs never smoking), age of SI, or smoking cessation (SC, former vs current smoking). Informative associations that approached genome-wide significance included three modestly correlated variants, at 15q25.1 within PSMA4, CHRNA5 and CHRNA3 for smoking quantity, which are associated with a second signal previously reported in studies in European ancestry populations, and a signal represented by three SNPs in the SPOCK2 gene on chr10q22.1. The association at 15q25.1 confirms this region as an important susceptibility locus for smoking quantity in men and women of African ancestry. Larger studies will be needed to validate the suggestive loci that did not reach genome-wide significance and further elucidate the contribution of genetic variation to disparities in cigarette consumption, SC and smoking-attributable disease between African Americans and European Americans
