Two-frequency shell model for hypernuclei and meson-exchange hyperon-nucleon potentials
A two-frequency shell model is proposed for investigating the structure of hypernuclei starting with a hyperon-nucleon potential in free space. In a calculation using the folded-diagram method for ΚâśO, the Î single particle energy is found to have a saturation minimum at an oscillator frequency ħĎÎâ10MeV, for the Î orbit, which is considerably smaller than ħĎN=14MeV for the nucleon orbit. The spin-dependence parameters derived from the Nijmegen NSC89 and NSC97f potentials are similar, but both are rather different from those obtained with the JĂźlich-B potential. The ÎNN three-body interactions induced by ÎN-ÎŁN transitions are important for the spin parameters, but relatively unimportant for the low-lying states of ΚâśO.Yiharn Tzeng, S. Y. Tsay Tzeng, T. T. Suppression of core polarization in halo nuclei
We present a microscopic study of halo nuclei, starting from the Paris and
Bonn potentials and employing a two-frequency shell model approach. It is found
that the core-polarization effect is dramatically suppressed in such nuclei.
Consequently the effective interaction for halo nucleons is almost entirely
given by the bare G-matrix alone, which presently can be evaluated with a high
degree of accuracy. The experimental pairing energies between the two halo
neutrons in He and Li nuclei are satisfactorily reproduced by our
calculation. It is suggested that the fundamental nucleon-nucleon interaction
can be probed in a clearer and more direct way in halo nuclei than in ordinary

Ising model on nonorientable surfaces: Exact solution for the Moebius strip and the Klein bottle
Closed-form expressions are obtained for the partition function of the Ising
model on an M x N simple-quartic lattice embedded on a Moebius strip and a
Klein bottle for finite M and N. The finite-size effects at criticality are
analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and toroidal boundary

Spanning Trees on Graphs and Lattices in d Dimensions
The problem of enumerating spanning trees on graphs and lattices is
considered. We obtain bounds on the number of spanning trees and
establish inequalities relating the numbers of spanning trees of different
graphs or lattices. A general formulation is presented for the enumeration of
spanning trees on lattices in dimensions, and is applied to the
hypercubic, body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic, and specific planar
lattices including the kagom\'e, diced, 4-8-8 (bathroom-tile), Union Jack, and
3-12-12 lattices. This leads to closed-form expressions for for these
lattices of finite sizes. We prove a theorem concerning the classes of graphs
and lattices with the property that
as the number of vertices , where is a finite
nonzero constant. This includes the bulk limit of lattices in any spatial
dimension, and also sections of lattices whose lengths in some dimensions go to
infinity while others are finite. We evaluate exactly for the
lattices we considered, and discuss the dependence of on d and the

We present the number of dimers on the Sierpinski gasket
at stage with dimension equal to two, three, four or five, where one of
the outmost vertices is not covered when the number of vertices is an
odd number. The entropy of absorption of diatomic molecules per site, defined
as , is calculated to be

Sympatric Spawning but Allopatric Distribution of Anguilla japonica and Anguilla marmorata: Temperature- and Oceanic Current-Dependent Sieving
Anguilla japonica and Anguilla marmorata share overlapping spawning sites, similar drifting routes, and comparable larval durations. However, they exhibit allopatric geographical distributions in East Asia. To clarify this ecological discrepancy, glass eels from estuaries in Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and China were collected monthly, and the survival rate of A. marmorata under varying water salinities and temperatures was examined. The composition ratio of these 2 eel species showed a significant latitude cline, matching the 24°C sea surface temperature isotherm in winter. Both species had opposing temperature preferences for recruitment. A. marmorata prefer high water temperatures and die at low water temperatures. In contrast, A. japonica can endure low water temperatures, but their recruitment is inhibited by high water temperatures. Thus, A. japonica glass eels, which mainly spawn in summer, are preferably recruited to Taiwan, China, Korea, and Japan by the Kuroshio and its branch waters in winter. Meanwhile, A. marmorata glass eels, which spawn throughout the year, are mostly screened out in East Asia in areas with low-temperature coastal waters in winter. During summer, the strong northward currents from the South China Sea and Changjiang River discharge markedly block the Kuroshio invasion and thus restrict the approach of A. marmorata glass eels to the coasts of China and Korea. The differences in the preferences of the recruitment temperature for glass eels combined with the availability of oceanic currents shape the real geographic distribution of Anguilla japonica and Anguilla marmorata, making them âtemperateâ and âtropicalâ eels, respectively
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
