    Out of sight, out of mind. Reassessing positive obligations towards victims of human trafficking

    States bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Channel are leaving many migrants to their fate. By doing so, they are failing in their legal obligations to identify and protect actual and potential victims of human trafficking. This article challenges the legal position of these states, providing a creative construction of EU and Council of Europe law on human trafficking and European human rights legislation. The work first focuses on how the obligations towards asylum seekers, migrants distressed at sea and victims of trafficking interrelate and overlap; and reflects on the implications of the different statuses. It then considers whether the multiple International Maritime Law Treaties that bind State signatories in respect of rescue-at-sea missions provide protection for actual and potential victims of human trafficking. It undertakes an analysis of European anti-trafficking legal regimes, which include the Council of Europe Convention against Human Trafficking (CETS 197), Article 4 of European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and Directive 2011/36/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and Protecting its Victims (hereafter ‘EU Human Trafficking Directive’). Finally, the article focuses on the UK as a case-study. The piece argues that the international law of the sea, whilst aiming at saving lives of people stranded in the high sea, does not guarantee the identification and protection of human trafficking victims amongst those being saved.     Characterization of metabolic profiles and lipopolysaccharide effects on porcine vascular wall mesenchymal stem cells

    The link between metabolic remodeling and stem cell fate is still unclear. To explore this topic, the metabolic profile of porcine vascular wall mesenchymal stem cells (pVW-MSCs) was investigated. At the first and second cell passages, pVW-MSCs exploit both glycolysis and cellular respiration to synthesize adenosine triphosphate (ATP), but in the subsequent (third to eighth) passages they do not show any mitochondrial ATP turnover. Interestingly, when the first passage pVW-MSCs are exposed to 0.1 or 10 μg/ml lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) for 4 hr, even if ATP synthesis is prevented, the spare respiratory capacity is retained and the glycolytic capacity is unaffected. In contrast, the exposure of pVW-MSCs at the fifth passage to 10 μg/ml LPS stimulates mitochondrial ATP synthesis. Flow cytometry rules out any reactive oxygen species (ROS) involvement in the LPS effects, thus suggesting that the pVW-MSC metabolic pattern is modulated by culture conditions via ROS-independent mechanisms

    Use of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGDB) for promoting tomato growth and its evaluation as biological control agent.

    The plant growth promoting effect of some bacteria usable to control plant diseases has a potential for resolving technical problems of plant production. The effects of Burkholderia gladioli pv. agaricicola ICMP11096 on development of tomato seedlings development and control of their infection by Fusarium oxysporum and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were evaluated in the present study. Bacterized plants showed a higher shoot and root weight and a more extended root system in terms of total length and root density than non-bacterized plants. The bacter-izing treatments gave rise to significant reduction of disease symptoms such as leaf wilting induced by F. oxysporum infection and/or root ne-crosis and leaf yellowing by S. sclerotiorum. The potential use of Burkholderia gladioli pv. agaricicola ICMP11096 in biocontrol of fungal patho-gens and to enhance seedling growth parameters is underlined as a tool to achieve a high commercial quality of nursery tomato plants

    Same-day discharge following catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation: A safe and cost-effective approach

    Introduction: The frequency of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) has increased dramatically, stretching resources. Discharge on the same day as treatment may increase the efficiency and throughput. There are limited data regarding the safety of this strategy. / Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of consecutive patients undergoing AF ablation in a tertiary center and in a district general hospital, and identified those discharged on the same day of treatment. The safety endpoint was any complication and/or presentation to hospital in the 48‐h and at 30 days postdischarge. We performed an economic analysis to calculate potential cost saving. / Results: Among a total population of 2628 patients, we identified 727 subjects (61.1 ± 12.5 years, 69.6% male) undergoing day‐case AF ablation. Cryoballoon technique was used in 79.2% of the day‐cases, and 91.6% of the procedures were performed under conscious sedation. 1.8% (13) of the participants met the safety composite endpoint at 48‐h, however only 0.7% (5) required at least 1 day of hospitalization. Bleeding or hematoma at the femoral access site (0.5%) and pericarditic chest pain (0.5%) were the main reasons for readmission. None experienced cardiac tamponade or other life‐threatening complications in the 48‐h postdischarge. Overall rate of complication and/or presentation to hospital at 30 days was 3.7%. Our day‐case policy resulted in an annual cost‐saving of approximately of £83 927 for our hospital. / Conclusion: In this large multicentre cohort, same‐day discharge in selected patients following AF ablation appears to be safe and cost‐effective, with a very low rate of early readmission or post‐discharge complication

    Our understanding of creativity is limited, yet there is substantial research trying to mimic human creativity in artificial systems and in particular to produce systems that automatically evolve art appreciated by humans. We propose here to study human visual preference through observation of nearly 500 user sessions with a simple evolutionary art system. The progress of a set of aesthetic measures throughout each interactive user session is monitored and subsequently mimicked by automatic evolution in an attempt to produce an image to the liking of the human user

    MAGGnet: an international network to foster mitigation of agricultural greenhouse gases.

    Research networks provide a framework for review, synthesis and systematic testing of theories by multiple scientists across international borders critical for addressing global-scale issues. In 2012, a GHG research network referred to as MAGGnet (Managing Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Network) was established within the Croplands Research Group of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). With involvement from 46 alliance member countries, MAGGnet seeks to provide a platform for the inventory and analysis of agricultural GHG mitigation research throughout the world. To date, metadata from 315 experimental studies in 20 countries have been compiled using a standardized spreadsheet. Most studies were completed (74%) and conducted within a 1-3-year duration (68%). Soil carbon and nitrous oxide emissions were measured in over 80% of the studies. Among plant variables, grain yield was assessed across studies most frequently (56%), followed by stover (35%) and root (9%) biomass. MAGGnet has contributed to modeling efforts and has spurred other research groups in the GRA to collect experimental site metadata using an adapted spreadsheet. With continued growth and investment, MAGGnet will leverage limited-resource investments by any one country to produce an inclusive, globally shared meta-database focused on the science of GHG mitigation

    Frequency of left ventricular hypertrophy in non-valvular atrial fibrillation

    Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is significantly related to adverse clinical outcomes in patients at high risk of cardiovascular events. In patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), data on LVH, that is, prevalence and determinants, are inconsistent mainly because of different definitions and heterogeneity of study populations. We determined echocardiographic-based LVH prevalence and clinical factors independently associated with its development in a prospective cohort of patients with non-valvular (NV) AF. From the "Atrial Fibrillation Registry for Ankle-brachial Index Prevalence Assessment: Collaborative Italian Study" (ARAPACIS) population, 1,184 patients with NVAF (mean age 72 \ub1 11 years; 56% men) with complete data to define LVH were selected. ARAPACIS is a multicenter, observational, prospective, longitudinal on-going study designed to estimate prevalence of peripheral artery disease in patients with NVAF. We found a high prevalence of LVH (52%) in patients with NVAF. Compared to those without LVH, patients with AF with LVH were older and had a higher prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and previous myocardial infarction (MI). A higher prevalence of ankle-brachial index 640.90 was seen in patients with LVH (22 vs 17%, p = 0.0392). Patients with LVH were at significantly higher thromboembolic risk, with CHA2DS2-VASc 652 seen in 93% of LVH and in 73% of patients without LVH (p <0.05). Women with LVH had a higher prevalence of concentric hypertrophy than men (46% vs 29%, p = 0.0003). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that female gender (odds ratio [OR] 2.80, p <0.0001), age (OR 1.03 per year, p <0.001), hypertension (OR 2.30, p <0.001), diabetes (OR 1.62, p = 0.004), and previous MI (OR 1.96, p = 0.001) were independently associated with LVH. In conclusion, patients with NVAF have a high prevalence of LVH, which is related to female gender, older age, hypertension, and previous MI. These patients are at high thromboembolic risk and deserve a holistic approach to cardiovascular prevention

    Metabolic Programming during Lactation Stimulates Renal Na+ Transport in the Adult Offspring Due to an Early Impact on Local Angiotensin II Pathways

    BACKGROUND: Several studies have correlated perinatal malnutrition with diseases in adulthood, giving support to the programming hypothesis. In this study, the effects of maternal undernutrition during lactation on renal Na(+)-transporters and on the local angiotensin II (Ang II) signaling cascade in rats were investigated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Female rats received a hypoproteic diet (8% protein) throughout lactation. Control and programmed offspring consumed a diet containing 20% protein after weaning. Programming caused a decrease in the number of nephrons (35%), in the area of the Bowman's capsule (30%) and the capillary tuft (30%), and increased collagen deposition in the cortex and medulla (by 175% and 700%, respectively). In programmed rats the expression of (Na(+)+K(+))ATPase in proximal tubules increased by 40%, but its activity was doubled owing to a threefold increase in affinity for K(+). Programming doubled the ouabain-insensitive Na(+)-ATPase activity with loss of its physiological response to Ang II, increased the expression of AT(1) and decreased the expression of AT(2) receptors), and caused a pronounced inhibition (90%) of protein kinase C activity with decrease in the expression of the α (24%) and ε (13%) isoforms. Activity and expression of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase decreased in the same proportion as the AT(2) receptors (30%). In vivo studies at 60 days revealed an increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) (70%), increased Na(+) excretion (80%) and intense proteinuria (increase of 400% in protein excretion). Programmed rats, which had normal arterial pressure at 60 days, became hypertensive by 150 days. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Maternal protein restriction during lactation results in alterations in GFR, renal Na(+) handling and in components of the Ang II-linked regulatory pathway of renal Na(+) reabsorption. At the molecular level, they provide a framework for understanding how metabolic programming of renal mechanisms contributes to the onset of hypertension in adulthood
