Collaborative Musical Expression and Creativity Among Academics: When Intellectualism Meets Twelve Bar Blues
The Professors are a blues, rock, and sometime heavy metal band made up of communication professors from a number of New Jersey schools. Formed in 1995, the band has played in clubs in New York City as well as a number of academic venues, including the annual conference of the International Communication Association in Chicago in 1996 and the annual conference of the National Communication Association in New York City in 1998. The Professors have been featured in both local and national press, including the Chronicle of Higher Education. When we learned of the call for papers for this special issue of the American Communication Journal addressing the creative endeavors of Communication scholars beyond their regular research agendas, we were delighted to have the opportunity to reflect upon the place of musical creativity within our lives as working academics. What follows in this paper are the thoughts of a number of band members, past and present, who trace the relationship of the musical, the creative, and the intellectual in terms of their own personal histories and academic interests
Random and Correlated Phases of Primordial Gravitaional Waves
The phases of primordial gravity waves is analysed in detail within a quantum
mechanical context following the formalism developed by Grishchuk and Sidorov.
It is found that for physically relevant wavelengths both the phase of each
individual mode and the phase {\it difference} between modes are randomly
distributed. The phase {\it sum} between modes with oppositely directed
wave-vectors, however, is not random and takes on a definite value with no rms
fluctuation. The conventional point of view that primordial gravity waves
appear after inflation as a classical, random stochastic background is also

The development and validation of the Ontological Addiction Scale
Ontological Addiction Theory is a metaphysical theory of mental illness which conceptualises psychological suffering in terms of excessive ego-centeredness. This study aimed to develop and validate the Ontological Addiction Scale (OAS) and compare OAS scores with mental health measures. A 31-item prototype scale was developed based on traditional Buddhist theory and contemporary models of addiction. An ego-centeredness form of the Five-Factor Narcissism Inventory (FFNI) was the main criterion measure. For mental health measures, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were used. The prototype OAS and two shorter versions showed excellent internal consistency and test–retest reliability. Construct validity was evidenced by medium to large correlations with criterion measures. OAS scores showed strong correlations with PHQ-9, GAD-7 and RSES, suggesting a clear relationship between OAS and mental health. The OAS appears to be a valid and reliable instrument suitable for assessing OA
Problem-based learning in dental education: what's the evidence for and against... and is it worth the effort?

An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.All Australian dental schools have introduced problem-based learning (PBL) approaches to their programmes over the past decade, although the nature of the innovations has varied from school to school. Before one can ask whether PBL is better than the conventional style of education, one needs to consider three key issues. Firstly, we need to agree on what is meant by the term PBL; secondly, we need to decide what “better” means when comparing educational approaches; and thirdly, we must look carefully at how PBL is implemented in given situations. It is argued that PBL fulfils, at least in theory, some important principles relating to the development of new knowledge. It also represents a change in focus from teachers and teaching in conventional programmes to learners and learning. Generally, students enjoy PBL programmes more than conventional programmes and feel they are more nurturing. There is also some evidence of an improvement in clinical and diagnostic reasoning ability associated with PBL curricula. The main negative points raised about PBL are the costs involved and mixed reports of insufficient grounding of students in the basic sciences. Financial restraints will probably preclude the introduction of pure or fully integrated PBL programmes in Australian dental schools. However, our research and experience, as well as other published literature, indicate that well-planned hybrid PBL programmes, with matching methods of assessment, can foster development of the types of knowledge, skills and attributes that oral health professionals will need in the future.T Winning and G Townsen
The role of illness scripts in the development of medical diagnostic expertise: Results from an interview study
In this article, we describe a study in which some current ideas about illness scripts are tested. Participants at 4 levels of medical expertise were asked to describe either a prototypical patient or the clinical picture associated with a number of different diseases. It was found that participants at intermediate levels of expertise mentioned, both absolutely and relatively, many enabling conditions (patient contextual factors such as sex, age, medical history, and occupation) when asked to describe a prototypical patient with a disease, whereas the instruction to describe the clinical picture of a disease revealed a monotonic relation with expertise level. The amount of biomedical information in the descriptions decreased with increasing expertise level for both types of instruction. In addition, a positive relation was found between number of actual patients seen with a particular disease and number of enabling conditions mentioned. These results were interpreted as supportive of the present conceptualization of the illness script theory
Photo-centric variability of quasars caused by variations in their inner structure: Consequences on Gaia measurements
We study the photocenter position variability due to variations in the quasar
inner structure. We consider variability in the accretion disk emissivity and
torus structure variability due to different illumination by the central
source. We discuss possible detection of these effects by Gaia. Observations of
the photocenter variability in two AGNs, SDSS J121855+020002 and SDSS
J162011+1724327 have been reported and discussed. With investigation of the
variations in the quasar inner structure we explore how much this effect can
affect the position determination and whether it can be (or not) detected with
Gaia mission. We used (a) a model of a relativistic disk, including the
perturbation that can increase brightness of a part of the disk, and
consequently offset the photocenter position, and (b) a model of a dusty torus
which absorbs and re-emits the incoming radiation from accretion disk. We
estimated the value of the photocenter offset due to these two effects. We
found that perturbations in the inner structure can significantly offset the
photocenter. It depends on the characteristics of perturbation and accretion
disk and structure of the torus. In the case of two considered QSOs the
observed photocenter offsets cannot be explained by variations in the accretion
disk and other effects should be considered. We discussed possibility of
exploding stars very close to the AGN source, and also possibility that there
are two variable sources in the center of these two AGNs that may indicate a
binary super-massive black hole system on a kpc (pc) scale. The Gaia mission
seems to be very perspective, not only for astrometry, but also for exploring
the inner structure of AGNs. We conclude that variations in the quasar inner
structure can affect the observed photocenter (up to several mas). There is a
chance to observe such effect in the case of bright and low-redshifted QSOs.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in Astronomy
