Effects of Pisolithus Tinctorius and Laccaria Fraterna on the Growth and Mycorrfflzal Development of Pinuspatula Seedlings*)

Vegetative inoculum of Pisolithus tinctorius and Laccariafraterna were inoculated to Pinuspatula seedlings grown in both steam sterilized and unsterilized shola soil. After 4 months of seedling growth, 10 seedlings from each treatment were harvested and various growth parameters were studied. Inoculation of these two fungi resulted in the production of ectomycorrhizas and increase in growth of P. patula seedlings when compared to uninoculated seedlings. Laccariafraterna inoculated seedlings showed more number of mycorrhizas than P. tinctorius inoculated seedlings at the end of one year. Both these fungi poorly colonized the root system in both soil treatments. There was no significant difference between these two fungi in improving the seedling growth in the nursery

Fatty acid profile of fish scale of Catla catla

Fish scales are useful to ichthyologists for the purposes of classification, identification, age determination and history study. The fatty acid profile of the hexane extracts of the fresh water fish scale of Catla catla were analyzed by gas chromatography. Fish scales were collected from a local fish market, Chidambaram. The fatty acid profile was detected in the scales, with the following fatty acids dominating: 16:0, 18:0, 18:1, 18:2, 18:3 and 18:4. The use of fatty acid profiling in fish scales has the potential for stock identification in addition to the identification of fish farm escapees.Key words: Fish scales, fatty acid, gas chromatography, Catla catla

Gut microflora of some edible crabs from Porto Novo Coast

399-401Gut microflora of 5 commercially important crabs, viz. Charybdis cruciata (Herbst), Podophthalmus vigil (Fabricius) (marine), Scylla serrata (Forskal), Portumus pelagicus (Linnaeus), Podophthalmus sanguinolentus (Herbst) (estuarine), were studied. The midgut harboured highest aerobic and proteolytic bacteria. Luminescent bacterial flora were predominant in the hindgut and on the cuticular membrane of all the crabs examined. High numbers of heterotrophic bacteria were recorded in the midgut of Scylla serrata

Underwater acoustic instrumentation for investigating deep scattering layer

The instruments used for the DSL studies were scientific echo-sounder for detection, Isacc's Kid Midwater trawl for sampling mesopelagics and the trawl sonde to lower the IKMT to the exact depth at which the DSL appeared. Opening of the IKMT and the temperature of the seawater at which the DSL appeared was also recorded on the trawl sonde system. The echoscope connected to the echosounder showed the DSL in different colours depending upon its density. The continuous monitoring on echogram revealed that the DSL observed at surface during night and at 600 m depth during day

Effect of timing and graded levels of nitrogen and potassium in SRI cultivation

A field experiment was carried out at Annamalai University Experimental farm, Annamalai nagar, during Kuruvai and Navarai in the year 2008-09. To study the timing and graded levels of nitrogen and potassium in rice crop under SRI (System of rice intensification) cultivation. The experiment was laid out on deep clay soil by adopting randomized block design with factorial technique (FRBD). The results of field experiment revealed that the maximum growth and yield attributes were recorded in the treatment which received P2O5 as fully basal dose and nitrogen as three split doses viz., 50% basal and 25% each at tillering and panicle initiation stages. Potassium was applied as 33.3% K2O each at 15, 30 and 45 DAT. This treatment significantly recorded higher grain yield of 6278.7 kg ha-1 in field experiment – I and 6577.9 kg ha-1 in field experiment – II; and the straw yield of 7010.3 and 7309.7 kg ha-1 in field experiment I and II respectively. The shoot and grain uptake of nutrients (N, P and K) were high during 15, 30 and 45 DAT and at harvest which received 33.3 % K2O each at 15, 30 and 45 DAT

A note on indices of primepower and semiprime divisor function graph

    Get PDF
The notion of using number theortic based graph seems to be one of the flourishing areas in Graph theory. One such concept is the divisor function graph GD(n) which is defined as: For any positive integer n ≥ 1 with r divisors d1, d2, d3, ..., dr, divisor function graph GD(n) is a (V, E) graph with V as the set of all factors of n and E be defined in such a way that two vertices di and dj are adjacent if and only if either di | dj or dj | di, i 6= j. In this paper, we analyze the operation sum of two divisor function graphs and investigate several indices exclusively for prime powers and for semi primes. Also, we derive a result for an independent function.Publisher's Versio

Interference Effects in Multiple Gaseous Diffusion Flames

    Get PDF
Interference effects in multiple diffusion flames have been investigated. The study involved the experimental determination of flame heights of LPG diffusion flames issuing through orifices of two different diameters, viz., 1.3 and 1.7 mm. arranged in two different configurations, as a function of nozzle velocity and spacing between individual jets. The flame heights were measured from direct photographs. The interference effects arise principally as a result of oxygen starvation at close separation and lead to increased flame sizes:These effects are more pronounced in the five-burner arrangement and for the smaller orifice. They decrease with both spacing and nozzle velocity
