Annual radial growth cycle of grapevine trunk in the tropics
The annual radial trunk growth cycle in V. vinifera var. Anab-e-Shahi was studied in the tropics where the vines are pruned twice a year. Although vines grow continuously without any period of dormancy, a consistant pattern of maximum girth increment from April to September altemating with negligible increment from October to March was observed. The rate of annual girth increment was high during juvenile period and steadily decreased later. There is further need to study the physiology of growth and fruiting of tropical grapevines under conditions of nondormancy as modified by two prunings in a year.
Transmission dynamics of novel influenza A/H1N1 2009 outbreak in a residential school in India
Transmission dynamics of an outbreak of novel influenza A/H1N1 (2009) in June-July 2009 in a residential school in Maharashtra, India has been studied. A mathematical model of the type susceptible-exposedinfectious- asymptomatic-recovered has been adopted for the purpose. Analyses of epidemiological data revealed that close clustering within population resulted in high transmissibility with basic reproduction number R0 = 2.61 and transmission rate (β) being 0.001566. Model has successfully described the dynamics of transmission in a residential school setting and helped in ascertaining the epidemiological parameters for asymptomatic cases and the effectiveness of the control measures. Our study presents a framework for studying similar outbreaks of influenza involving clustered populations
Nucleon decay matrix elements with the Wilson quark action: an update
We present preliminary results of a new lattice computation of hadronic
matrix elements of baryon number violating operators which appear in the
low-energy effective Lagrangian of (SUSY-)Grand Unified Theories. The
contribution of irrelevant form factor which has caused an underestimate of the
matrix elements in previous studies is subtracted in this calculation. Our
results are 24 times larger than the most conservative values often
employed in phenomenological analyses of nucleon decay with specific GUT
models.Comment: LATTICE99(matrixelements), 3 pages, 2 figure
Effect of dietary zinc on the growth and metabolic enzyme activities of golden mahseer (Tor putitora) fry
The golden mahseer (Tor putitora) is an important and high valued sport and food fish of national and international importance. Therefore for promotion of golden mahseer, proper mineral supplementation in early developmental stages is very important. The present study evaluated the effects of dietary zinc on growth, survivaland physiological response of Tor putitora fry. One thousand eight hundred fry (avg.wt 54.35±3.09 mg) were randomly distributed into 6 treatment groups with triplicates each. Six iso-nitrogenous (40±0.02% to 41.44±0.01% crude protein) semi-purified diets were prepared with graded levels of dietary zinc. Zinc sulphate was added as the dietary zinc source to the basal diet. The results indicated that specific growth rate (SGR) was of value 2.52 ±0.23 gm of T. putitora fry which increased with dietary zinc levels up to a concentration of 40 mg Zn Kg-1 in diet. The zinc dependent metabolic enzymes and antioxidant enzymes was also observed to be highest in groups supplemented with 40 mg zinc/kg feed. The overall results of the present study suggest the efficacy of dietary zinc on growth, survival and physiological response of golden mahseer fry in order to garner the possibility of establishing the species to commercial aquaculture
THE ACCUSED IS ENTERING THE COURTROOM: THE LIVE-TWEETING OF A MURDER TRIAL.
© 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis GroupThe use of social media is now widely accepted within journalism as an outlet for news information. Live tweeting of unfolding events is standard practice. In March 2014, Oscar Pistorius went on trial in the Gauteng High Court for murder. Hundreds of journalists present began live-tweeting coverage, an unprecedented combination of international interest, permission to use technology and access which resulted in massive streams of consciousness reports of events as they unfolded. Based on a corpus of Twitter feeds of twenty-four journalists covering the trial, this study analyses the content and strategies of these feeds in order to present an understanding of how microblogging is used as a live reporting tool. This study shows the development of standardised language and strategies in reporting on Twitter, concluding that journalists adopt a narrow range of approaches, with no significant variation in terms of gender, location, or medium. This is in contrast to earlier studies in the field (Awad, 2006, Hedman, 2015; Kothari, 2010; Lariscy, Avery, Sweetser, & Howes, 2009 Lasorsa, 2012; Lasorsa, Lewis, & Holton, 2011; Sigal, 1999, Vis, 2013).Peer reviewe

Containment and equivalence of weighted automata: Probabilistic and max-plus cases
This paper surveys some results regarding decision problems for probabilistic and max-plus automata, such as containment and equivalence. Probabilistic and max-plus automata are part of the general family of weighted automata, whose semantics are maps from words to real values. Given two weighted automata, the equivalence problem asks whether their semantics are the same, and the containment problem whether one is point-wise smaller than the other one. These problems have been studied intensively and this paper will review some techniques used to show (un)decidability and state a list of open questions that still remain
Production of Biodiesel using waste temple oil from Shani Shingnapur temple (Dist. Ahmednagar), Maharashtra, India using chemical and biological methods
In India, due to various mythological and religious reasons hundreds of devotees pour oil over the idols in Hanuman or Maruti and Shani temples. The oil once poured cannot be reutilized and was ultimately wasted. These waste temple oil from Shani Shingnapurwas used to produce biodiesel. Immobilized Pseudomonas aeruginosa was used to catalyze transesterification of waste temple oil. The cells of P.aeruginosa were immobilized within the sodium alginate. Biodiesel production and its applications were gaining popularity in recent years due to decreased petroleum based reserves. Biodiesel cost formed from waste temple oil was higher than that of fossil fuel, because of high raw material cost.To decrease the cost of biofuel, waste temple oil was used as alternative as feedstock. It has lower emission of pollutants; it is biodegradable and enhances engine lubricity. Waste temple oil contains triglycerides that were used for biodiesel production by chemical and biological method.Transesterification reaction of oil produces methyl esters that are substitutes for fatty acid alkyl biodiesel fuel. Characteristics of oil were studied such as specific gravity, viscosity, acid number, saponification number.Parameters such as temperature, oil: methanol ratio were studied and 88%, 96% of biodiesel yield was obtained with effect of temperature and oil: methanol ratio on transesterification reaction. Withaddition ofNaOH or KOH to fatty acids which formed salt known as soap, which is excellent emulsifying and cleaning agents
