    Observations of Oscillating Cavitation on a Flat Plate Hydrofoil

    An experimental investigation was made to clarify the characteristics of oscillating cavitation on a flat plate hydrofoil in a water tunnel. Dynamic the behavior of oscillating cavitation is discussed from the unsteady pressure measurements at the upstream of the blade and the visual observations of cavitation phenomena using high-speed video recording. It was found that the mean cavity length characterizes the fundamental characteristics of cavity oscillation.     Filmes de glúten de trigo foram preparados em diferentes valores de pH e concentrações de glúten, etanol e glicerol. Seus efeitos sobre permeabilidade ao vapor de água e oxigênio, solubilidade em água, força de tensão e porcentagem de elongação foram avaliados usando-se a Metodologia de Superfície de Resposta. Menor permeabilidade ao oxigênio foi observada em menores concentrações de glicerol, glúten e etanol. As propriedades mecânicas foram principalmente afetadas pelas concentrações de glúten e glicerol e o filme mais resistente foi obtido quando maior concentração de glúten e menor de glicerol foram utilizadas. Coberturas de glúten de trigo aplicadas em morangos frescos reduziram as perdas de firmeza e de peso durante a estocagem em comparação com controle não revestido. Abstract Films from wheat gluten were prepared with different pH values and concentrations of gluten, ethanol and glycerol. Their effects on oxygen and water vapor permeabilities, water solubility, tensile strength and percent elongation at break were evaluated using Response Surface Methodology. The lowest oxygen permeability would be expected at low concentrations of glycerol, gluten and ethanol. The mechanical properties were mainly affected by gluten and glycerol concentrations and the most resistant film was obtained at high gluten and low glycerol concentrations. Wheat gluten coating applied to fresh strawberries reduced weight and firmness losses during storage as compared to uncoated controls

    Detection of a gamma-ray flare from the high-redshift blazar DA 193

    High-redshift (z>2z>2) blazars are the most powerful members of the blazar family. Yet, only a handful of them have both X-ray and γ\gamma-ray detection, thereby making it difficult to characterize the energetics of the most luminous jets. Here, we report, for the first time, the Fermi-Large Area Telescope detection of the significant γ\gamma-ray emission from the high-redshift blazar DA 193 (z=2.363z=2.363). Its time-averaged γ\gamma-ray spectrum is soft (γ\gamma-ray photon index = 2.9±0.12.9\pm0.1) and together with a relatively flat hard X-ray spectrum (14-195 keV photon index = 1.5±0.41.5\pm0.4), DA 193 presents a case to study a typical high-redshift blazar with inverse Compton peak being located at MeV energies. An intense GeV flare was observed from this object in the first week of 2018 January, a phenomenon rarely observed from high-redshift sources. What makes this event a rare one is the observation of an extremely hard γ\gamma-ray spectrum (photon index = 1.7±0.21.7\pm0.2), which is somewhat unexpected since high-redshift blazars typically exhibit a steep falling spectrum at GeV energies. The results of our multi-frequency campaign, including both space- (Fermi, NuSTAR, and Swift) and ground-based (Steward and Nordic Optical Telescope) observatories, are presented and this peculiar γ\gamma-ray flare is studied within the framework of a single-zone leptonic emission scenario.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, to appear in the Astrophysical Journa

    Verified and potential pathogens of predatory mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

    Several species of phytoseiid mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae), including species of the genera Amblyseius, Galendromus, Metaseiulus, Neoseiulus, Phytoseiulus and Typhlodromus, are currently reared for biological control of various crop pests and/or as model organisms for the study of predator¿prey interactions. Pathogen-free phytoseiid mites are important to obtain high efficacy in biological pest control and to get reliable data in mite research, as pathogens may affect the performance of their host or alter their reproduction and behaviour. Potential and verified pathogens have been reported for phytoseiid mites during the past 25 years. The present review provides an overview, including potential pathogens with unknown host effects (17 reports), endosymbiotic Wolbachia (seven reports), other bacteria (including Cardinium and Spiroplasma) (four reports), cases of unidentified diseases (three reports) and cases of verified pathogens (six reports). From the latter group four reports refer to Microsporidia, one to a fungus and one to a bacterium. Only five entities have been studied in detail, including Wolbachia infecting seven predatory mite species, other endosymbiotic bacteria infecting Metaseiulus (Galendromus, Typhlodromus) occidentalis (Nesbitt), the bacterium Acaricomes phytoseiuli infecting Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, the microsporidium Microsporidium phytoseiuli infecting P. persimilis and the microsporidium Oligosproridium occidentalis infecting M. occidentalis. In four cases (Wolbachia, A. phytoseiuli, M. phytoseiuli and O. occidentalis) an infection may be connected with fitness costs of the host. Moreover, infection is not always readily visible as no obvious gross symptoms are present. Monitoring of these entities on a routine and continuous basis should therefore get more attention, especially in commercial mass-production. Special attention should be paid to field-collected mites before introduction into the laboratory or mass rearing, and to mites that are exchanged among rearing facilities. However, at present general pathogen monitoring is not yet practical as effects of many entities are unknown. More research effort is needed concerning verified and potential pathogens of commercially reared arthropods and those used as model organisms in research

    Fungal entomopathogens: new insights on their ecology

    An important mechanism for insect pest control should be the use of fungal entomopathogens. Even though these organisms have been studied for more than 100 y, their effective use in the field remains elusive. Recently, however, it has been discovered that many of these entomopathogenic fungi play additional roles in nature. They are endophytes, antagonists of plant pathogens, associates with the rhizosphere, and possibly even plant growth promoting agents. These findings indicate that the ecological role of these fungi in the environment is not fully understood and limits our ability to employ them successfully for pest management. In this paper, we review the recently discovered roles played by many entomopathogenic fungi and propose new research strategies focused on alternate uses for these fungi. It seems likely that these agents can be used in multiple roles in protecting plants from pests and diseases and at the same time promoting plant growth

    Systemic Immunologic Consequences of Chronic Periodontitis

    Chronic periodontitis (ChP) is a prevalent inflammatory disease affecting 46% of the US population. ChP produces a profound local inflammatory response to dysbiotic oral microbiota that leads to destruction of alveolar bone and tooth loss. ChP is also associated with systemic illnesses, including cardiovascular diseases, malignancies, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the mechanisms underlying these adverse health outcomes are poorly understood. In this prospective cohort study, we used a highly multiplex mass cytometry immunoassay to perform an in-depth analysis of the systemic consequences of ChP in patients before (n = 28) and after (n = 16) periodontal treatment. A high-dimensional analysis of intracellular signaling networks revealed immune system–wide dysfunctions differentiating patients with ChP from healthy controls. Notably, we observed exaggerated proinflammatory responses to Porphyromonas gingivalis–derived lipopolysaccharide in circulating neutrophils and monocytes from patients with ChP. Simultaneously, natural killer cell responses to inflammatory cytokines were attenuated. Importantly, the immune alterations associated with ChP were no longer detectable 3 wk after periodontal treatment. Our findings demarcate systemic and cell-specific immune dysfunctions in patients with ChP, which can be temporarily reversed by the local treatment of ChP. Future studies in larger cohorts are needed to test the boundaries of generalizability of our results

    Multiomics modeling of the immunome, transcriptome, microbiome, proteome and metabolome adaptations during human pregnancy

    Motivation Multiple biological clocks govern a healthy pregnancy. These biological mechanisms produce immunologic, metabolomic, proteomic, genomic and microbiomic adaptations during the course of pregnancy. Modeling the chronology of these adaptations during full-term pregnancy provides the frameworks for future studies examining deviations implicated in pregnancy-related pathologies including preterm birth and preeclampsia. Results We performed a multiomics analysis of 51 samples from 17 pregnant women, delivering at term. The datasets included measurements from the immunome, transcriptome, microbiome, proteome and metabolome of samples obtained simultaneously from the same patients. Multivariate predictive modeling using the Elastic Net (EN) algorithm was used to measure the ability of each dataset to predict gestational age. Using stacked generalization, these datasets were combined into a single model. This model not only significantly increased predictive power by combining all datasets, but also revealed novel interactions between different biological modalities. Future work includes expansion of the cohort to preterm-enriched populations and in vivo analysis of immune-modulating interventions based on the mechanisms identified.     When Subterranean Termites Challenge the Rules of Fungal Epizootics

    Over the past 50 years, repeated attempts have been made to develop biological control technologies for use against economically important species of subterranean termites, focusing primarily on the use of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae. However, no successful field implementation of biological control has been reported. Most previous work has been conducted under the assumption that environmental conditions within termite nests would favor the growth and dispersion of entomopathogenic agents, resulting in an epizootic. Epizootics rely on the ability of the pathogenic microorganism to self-replicate and disperse among the host population. However, our study shows that due to multilevel disease resistance mechanisms, the incidence of an epizootic within a group of termites is unlikely. By exposing groups of 50 termites in planar arenas containing sand particles treated with a range of densities of an entomopathogenic fungus, we were able to quantify behavioral patterns as a function of the death ratios resulting from the fungal exposure. The inability of the fungal pathogen M. anisopliae to complete its life cycle within a Coptotermes formosanus (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) group was mainly the result of cannibalism and the burial behavior of the nest mates, even when termite mortality reached up to 75%. Because a subterranean termite colony, as a superorganism, can prevent epizootics of M. anisopliae, the traditional concepts of epizootiology may not apply to this social insect when exposed to fungal pathogens, or other pathogen for which termites have evolved behavioral and physiological means of disrupting their life cycle
