Nonequilibrium pattern formation in chiral Langmuir monolayers with transmembrane flows

    Get PDF
Nonequilibrium Langmuir monolayers including a fraction of chiral molecules and subject to transmembrane flow are considered. The flow induces coherent collective precession of chiral molecules. Our theoretical study shows that splay interactions in this system lead to spatial redistribution of chiral molecules and formation of spiral waves and target patterns observed in experiments

Nonequilibrium orientational patterns in two-component Langmuir monolayers

    Get PDF
A model of a phase-separating two-component Langmuir monolayer in the presence of a photo-induced reaction interconvering two components is formulated. An interplay between phase separation, orientational ordering and treaction is found to lead to a variety of nonequilibrium self-organized patterns, both stationary and traveling. Examples of the patterns, observed in numerical simulations, include flowing droplets, traveling stripes, wave sources and vortex defects.Comment: Submitted to the Physical Review

An active, resistant audience – but in whose interest?

Over the past few years, Chinese viewers have regularly mocked a popular genre of television dramas for overly heroic portrayals of the War of Resistance Against Japan. Charging the dramas with distorting history, the viewers nicknamed them ‘Mythic Plays’ and instigated a national discussion on the dramas’ representation of the war. This article analyzes the public controversy about Mythic Plays through a Critical Discourse Analysis of online comments. It examines viewers’ expectation of televisual representation of Chinese history and perception of their own position in the cultural ecology. On the one hand, this article proposes a revision to Hall’s encoding/decoding model. It points out that audience resistance to a text should not automatically be equated with resistance to dominant ideology, since the resistance can be the consequence of the producer-audience conflict over _how_ certain ideological meanings, rather than which ideological meanings, are encoded into the text. Meanwhile, the meanings perceived and opposed by the audience may not be the meanings intended by producers, due to the polysemic nature of the text. On the other hand, this article reveals that in addition to actively interpreting texts, audience members also interpret the power relations between text producers, regulators, and themselves. We call upon audience researchers to include thorough analysis of the audience’s _perception_ of these existing power relations

Observation of Photovoltaic Effect and Single-photon Detection in Nanowire Silicon Pn-junction

We  study  nanowire  silicon  pin  and  pn-junctions  at  room  and  low  temperature.  Photovoltaic  effects  are  observed  for both devices at room temperature. At low temperature, nanowire pn-junction devices show their ability to detect single photon. This ability was not been observed for pin devices. Phosphorus-boron dopant cluster in the depletion region is considered  to  have  the  main  role  for  single-photon  detection  capability.  Fundamental  mechanism  of  dopant-based single-photon detection in nanowire pn-junction is described in details

Neural network design and feature selection using principal component analysis and Taguchi method for identifying wood veneer defects

Nowadays, ensuring high quality can be considered the main strength for a company’s success. Especially, in a period of economic recession, quality control is crucial from the operational and strategic point of view. There are different quality control methods and it has been proven that on the whole companies using a continuous improvement approach, eliminating waste and maximizing productive flow, are more efficient and produce more with lower costs. This paper presents a method to optimize the quality control stage for a wood manufacturing firm. The method is based on the employment of the principal component analysis in order to reduce the number of critical variables to be given as input for an artificial neural network (ANN) to identify wood veneer defects. The proposed method allows the ANN classifier to identify defects in real time and increase the response speed during the quality control stage so that veneers with defects do not pass through the whole production cycle but are rejected at the beginning

Theory of monolayers with boundaries: Exact results and Perturbative analysis

Domains and bubbles in tilted phases of Langmuir monolayers contain a class of textures knows as boojums. The boundaries of such domains and bubbles may display either cusp-like features or indentations. We derive analytic expressions for the textures within domains and surrounding bubbles, and for the shapes of the boundaries of these regions. The derivation is perturbative in the deviation of the bounding curve from a circle. This method is not expected to be accurate when the boundary suffers large distortions, but it does provide important clues with regard to the influence of various energetic terms on the order-parameter texture and the shape of the domain or bubble bounding curve. We also look into the effects of thermal fluctuations, which include a sample-size-dependent effective line tension.Comment: replaced with published version, 21 pages, 16 figures include

    Polar Smectic Films

We report on a new experimental procedure for forming and studying polar smectic liquid crystal films. A free standing smectic film is put in contact with a liquid drop, so that the film has one liquid crystal/liquid interface and one liquid crystal/air interface. This polar environment results in changes in the textures observed in the film, including a boojum texture and a previously unobserved spiral texture in which the winding direction of the spiral reverses at a finite radius from its center. Some aspects of these textures are explained by the presence of a Ksb term in the bulk elastic free energy density that favors a combination of splay and bend deformations.Comment: 4 pages, REVTeX, 3 figures, submitted to PR

Major haplotype divergence including multiple germin-like protein genes, at the wheat Sr2 adult plant stem rust resistance locus

    Get PDF
Background The adult plant stem rust resistance gene Sr2 was introgressed into hexaploid wheat cultivar (cv) Marquis from tetraploid emmer wheat cv Yaroslav, to generate stem rust resistant cv Hope in the 1920s. Subsequently, Sr2 has been widely deployed and has provided durable partial resistance to all known races of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici. This report describes the physical map of the Sr2-carrying region on the short arm of chromosome 3B of cv Hope and compares the Hope haplotype with non-Sr2 wheat cv Chinese Spring. Results Sr2 was located to a region of 867 kb on chromosome 3B in Hope, which corresponded to a region of 567 kb in Chinese Spring. The Hope Sr2 region carried 34 putative genes but only 17 were annotated in the comparable region of Chinese Spring. The two haplotypes differed by extensive DNA sequence polymorphisms between flanking markers as well as by a major insertion/deletion event including ten Germin-Like Protein (GLP) genes in Hope that were absent in Chinese Spring. Haplotype analysis of a limited number of wheat genotypes of interest showed that all wheat genotypes carrying Sr2 possessed the GLP cluster; while, of those lacking Sr2, some, including Marquis, possessed the cluster, while some lacked it. Thus, this region represents a common presence-absence polymorphism in wheat, with presence of the cluster not correlated with presence of Sr2. Comparison of Hope and Marquis GLP genes on 3BS found no polymorphisms in the coding regions of the ten genes but several SNPs in the shared promoter of one divergently transcribed GLP gene pair and a single SNP downstream of the transcribed region of a second GLP. Conclusion Physical mapping and sequence comparison showed major haplotype divergence at the Sr2 locus between Hope and Chinese Spring. Candidate genes within the Sr2 region of Hope are being evaluated for the ability to confer stem rust resistance. Based on the detailed mapping and sequencing of the locus, we predict that Sr2 does not belong to the NB-LRR gene family and is not related to previously cloned, race non-specific rust resistance genes Lr34 and Yr36
