    Crossing Symmetry Violation of Unitarized Pion-Pion Amplitude in the Resonance Region

    Pion-pion scattering amplitude obtained from one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) is crossing symmetric, however the corresponding partial wave amplitudes do not respect exact unitarity relation. There are different approaches to get unitarized partial wave amplitudes from ChPT. Here we consider the inverse amplitude method (IAM) that is often used to fit pion-pion phase shifts to experimental data, by adjusting free parameters. We measure the amount of crossing symmetry violation (CSV) in this case and we show that crossing symmetry is badly violated by the IAM unitarized ChPT amplitude in the resonance region. Important CSV also occurs when all free parameters are set equal to zero.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Chlorinated organic contaminants in breast milk of New Zealand women.

    Breast milk samples from 38 women in New Zealand were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) as part of a World Health Organization collaborative study of breast-milk contaminants. The women were recruited from two urban areas (Auckland and Christchurch) and two rural areas (Northland and North Canterbury) in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The best predictor of contaminant concentrations in breast milk was found to be the age of the mother. Regional differences were found for hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin, and pp-DDE, reflecting historical use patterns. Urban-rural differences were found for several PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs when contaminant concentrations were calculated on a whole-milk basis. However, these differences could be attributed to variation in breast-milk fat concentrations between urban and rural mothers. Urban mothers had about 50% more breast-milk fat than rural mothers. Evidence suggests that breast-milk consumption by babies is regulated by caloric intake. Almost all of the caloric content of milk is in the fat fraction. This suggests that breast-milk contaminant levels calculated on a whole-milk basis do not necessarily reflect the relative levels of exposure of infants to these contaminants. However, the factors that influence breast-milk fat concentration deserve further study

    The COVID-19 global pandemic has impacted everyone’s lives—young and old. When the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on 11 March 2020 and one country after another went into lockdown, we as editors of YOUNG and youth researchers living in five different countries naturally started to think about and reflect on what impact the pandemic would have on young people’s everyday lives, their well-being and futures across different national settings. In response to this uncertainty and in the interest of capturing young people’s experiences, we as editors called for this special issue to focus on young people and COVID-19, exploring their changed everyday lives and how they adapted to the global pandemic. To accommodate the immense interest and the high quality of many of the submissions, this special issue of YOUNG is a double issue with 11 articles

    User-driven design of decision support systems for polycentric environmental resources management

    Open and decentralized technologies such as the Internet provide increasing opportunities to create knowledge and deliver computer-based decision support for multiple types of users across scales. However, environmental decision support systems/tools (henceforth EDSS) are often strongly science-driven and assuming single types of decision makers, and hence poorly suited for more decentralized and polycentric decision making contexts. In such contexts, EDSS need to be tailored to meet diverse user requirements to ensure that it provides useful (relevant), usable (intuitive), and exchangeable (institutionally unobstructed) information for decision support for different types of actors. To address these issues, we present a participatory framework for designing EDSS that emphasizes a more complete understanding of the decision making structures and iterative design of the user interface. We illustrate the application of the framework through a case study within the context of water-stressed upstream/downstream communities in Lima, Peru

    Changes in the Excitability of Corticobulbar Projections Due to Intraoral Cooling with Ice

    The aim of this study was to assess the effects of ice applied to the oral cavity on the excitability of corticobulbar projections to the swallowing muscles. The subjects were 8 healthy adult volunteers (mean age 29.0 ± 4.9 years). Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the suprahyoid muscle complex using surface electrodes. Two blocks of 20 MEPs with a test stimulus intensity of 120% of the resting motor threshold were recorded at rest (baseline). Subjects then underwent 5-min thermal stimulation by either of 3 different types: (1) "ice-stick inside mouth," (2) "ice-stick on neck," and (3) "room temperature inside mouth." Blocks of 20 MEPs were then recorded immediately and at 5-min intervals for the following 15 min. There was a significant difference in the effects of the 3 interventions on the amplitude of the MEPs following stimulation (two-way ANOVA: INTERVENTION × TIME; F8,84 = 3.76, p < 0.01). One-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the changes over time for each intervention type. Only "ice-stick inside mouth" caused an increase in the MEPs (one-way ANOVA main effect of TIME: F4,28 = 4.04, p = 0.010) with significant differences between baseline and P10 (mean difference 0.050; confidence interval (CI) 95% 0.019-0.079; p = 0.004). There were no significant effects of either "ice-stick on neck" or "room temperature inside mouth" (F4,28 = 1.13, p = 0.36; F4,28 = 1.36, p = 0.27, respectively).     First limits on the 3-200 keV X-ray spectrum of the quiet Sun using RHESSI

    We present the first results using the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, RHESSI, to observe solar X-ray emission not associated with active regions, sunspots or flares (the quiet Sun). Using a newly developed chopping technique (fan-beam modulation) during seven periods of offpointing between June 2005 to October 2006, we obtained upper limits over 3-200 keV for the quietest times when the GOES12 1-8A flux fell below 10810^{-8} Wm2^{-2}. These values are smaller than previous limits in the 17-120 keV range and extend them to both lower and higher energies. The limit in 3-6 keV is consistent with a coronal temperature 6\leq 6 MK. For quiet Sun periods when the GOES12 1-8A background flux was between 10810^{-8} Wm2^{-2} and 10710^{-7} Wm2^{-2}, the RHESSI 3-6 keV flux correlates to this as a power-law, with an index of 1.08±0.131.08 \pm 0.13. The power-law correlation for microflares has a steeper index of 1.29±0.061.29 \pm 0.06. We also discuss the possibility of observing quiet Sun X-rays due to solar axions and use the RHESSI quiet Sun limits to estimate the axion-to-photon coupling constant for two different axion emission scenarios.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Accepted by ApJ letter

    Neurocognitive Predictors of Treatment Response to Randomized Treatment in Adults with Tic Disorders

    Tourette\u27s disorder (TS) and chronic tic disorder (CTD) are neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by involuntary vocal and motor tics. Consequently, TS/CTD have been conceptualized as disorders of cognitive and motor inhibitory control. However, most neurocognitive studies have found comparable or superior inhibitory capacity among individuals with TS/CTD relative to healthy controls. These findings have led to the hypothesis that individuals with TS/CTD develop increased inhibitory control due to the constant need to inhibit tics. However, the role of cognitive control in TS/CTD is not yet understood, particularly in adults. To examine the role of inhibitory control in TS/CTD, the present study investigated this association by assessing the relationship between inhibitory control and treatment response in a large sample of adults with TS/CTD. As part of a large randomized trial comparing behavior therapy versus supportive psychotherapy for TS/CTD, a battery of tests, including tests of inhibitory control was administered to 122 adults with TS/CTD at baseline. We assessed the association between neuropsychological test performance and change in symptom severity, as well as compared the performance of treatment responders and non-responders as defined by the Clinical Global Impression Scale. Results indicated that change in symptoms, and treatment response were not associated with neuropsychological performance on tests of inhibitory control, intellectual ability, or motor function, regardless of type of treatment. The finding that significant change in symptom severity of TS/CTD patients is not associated with impairment or change in inhibitory control regardless of treatment type suggests that inhibitory control may not be a clinically relevant facet of these disorders in adults

    Environmental Virtual Observatories (EVOs): Prospects for knowledge co-creation and resilience in the Information Age

    Developments in technologies are shaping information access globally. This presents opportunities and challenges for understanding the role of new technologies in sustainability research. This article focuses on a suite of technologies termed Environmental Virtual Observatories (EVOs) developed for communicating observations and simulation of environmental processes. A strength of EVOs is that they are open and decentralised, thus democratising flow and ownership of information between multiple actors. However, EVOs are discussed rarely beyond their technical aspects. By evaluating the evolution of EVOs, we illustrate why it is timely to engage with policy and societal aspects as well. While first generation EVOs are primed for scientists, second generation EVOs can have broader implications for knowledge co-creation and resilience through their participatory design

    The Inverse Amplitude Method in ππ\pi\pi Scattering in Chiral Perturbation Theory to Two Loops

    The inverse amplitude method is used to unitarize the two loop ππ\pi\pi scattering amplitudes of SU(2) Chiral Perturbation Theory in the I=0,J=0I=0,J=0, I=1,J=1I=1,J=1 and I=2,J=0I=2,J=0 channels. An error analysis in terms of the low energy one-loop parameters lˉ1,2,3,4,\bar l_{1,2,3,4,} and existing experimental data is undertaken. A comparison to standard resonance saturation values for the two loop coefficients bˉ1,2,3,4,5,6\bar b_{1,2,3,4,5,6} is also carried out.
