On the Spectrum of Field Quadratures for a Finite Number of Photons
The spectrum and eigenstates of any field quadrature operator restricted to a
finite number of photons are studied, in terms of the Hermite polynomials.
By (naturally) defining \textit{approximate} eigenstates, which represent
highly localized wavefunctions with up to photons, one can arrive at an
appropriate notion of limit for the spectrum of the quadrature as goes to
infinity, in the sense that the limit coincides with the spectrum of the
infinite-dimensional quadrature operator. In particular, this notion allows the
spectra of truncated phase operators to tend to the complete unit circle, as
one would expect. A regular structure for the zeros of the Christoffel-Darboux
kernel is also shown.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Modelling the effect of short-course multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan
Background: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a major threat to global TB control. MDR-TB treatment regimens typically have a high pill burden, last 20 months or more and often lead to unsatisfactory outcomes. A 9-11 month regimen with seven antibiotics has shown high success rates among selected MDR-TB patients in different settings and is conditionally recommended by the World Health Organization.
Methods: We construct a transmission-dynamic model of TB to estimate the likely impact of a shorter MDR-TB regimen when applied in a low HIV prevalence region of Uzbekistan (Karakalpakstan) with high rates of drug resistance, good access to diagnostics and a well-established community-based MDR-TB treatment programme providing treatment to around 400 patients. The model incorporates acquisition of additional drug resistance and incorrect regimen assignment. It is calibrated to local epidemiology and used to compare the impact of shorter treatment against four alternative programmatic interventions.
Results: Based on empirical outcomes among MDR-TB patients and assuming no improvement in treatment success rates, the shorter regimen reduced MDR-TB incidence from 15.2 to 9.7 cases per 100,000 population per year and MDR-TB mortality from 3.0 to 1.7 deaths per 100,000 per year, achieving comparable or greater gains than the alternative interventions. No significant increase in the burden of higher levels of resistance was predicted. Effects are probably conservative given that the regimen is likely to improve success rates.
Conclusions: In addition to benefits to individual patients, we find that shorter MDR-TB treatment regimens also have the potential to reduce transmission of resistant strains. These findings are in the epidemiological setting of treatment availability being an important bottleneck due to high numbers of patients being eligible for treatment, and may differ in other contexts. The high proportion of MDR-TB with additional antibiotic resistance simulated was not exacerbated by programmatic responses and greater gains may be possible in contexts where the regimen is more widely applicable
Neutrino Masses and Mixing: Evidence and Implications
Measurements of various features of the fluxes of atmospheric and solar
neutrinos have provided evidence for neutrino oscillations and therefore for
neutrino masses and mixing. We review the phenomenology of neutrino
oscillations in vacuum and in matter. We present the existing evidence from
solar and atmospheric neutrinos as well as the results from laboratory
searches, including the final status of the LSND experiment. We describe the
theoretical inputs that are used to interpret the experimental results in terms
of neutrino oscillations. We derive the allowed ranges for the mass and mixing
parameters in three frameworks: First, each set of observations is analyzed
separately in a two-neutrino framework; Second, the data from solar and
atmospheric neutrinos are analyzed in a three active neutrino framework; Third,
the LSND results are added, and the status of accommodating all three signals
in the framework of three active and one sterile light neutrinos is presented.
We review the theoretical implications of these results: the existence of new
physics, the estimate of the scale of this new physics and the lessons for
grand unified theories, for supersymmetric models with R-parity violation, for
models of extra dimensions and singlet fermions in the bulk, and for flavor
models.Comment: Added note on the effects of KamLAND results. Two new figure
A rapidly-reversible absorptive and emissive vapochromic Pt(II) pincer-based chemical sensor
Selective, robust and cost-effective chemical sensors for detecting small volatile-organic compounds (VOCs) have widespread applications in industry, healthcare and environmental monitoring. Here we design a Pt(II) pincer-type material with selective absorptive and emissive responses to methanol and water. The yellow anhydrous form converts reversibly on a subsecond timescale to a red hydrate in the presence of parts-per-thousand levels of atmospheric water vapour. Exposure to methanol induces a similarly-rapid and reversible colour change to a blue methanol solvate. Stable smart coatings on glass demonstrate robust switching over 104 cycles, and flexible microporous polymer membranes incorporating microcrystals of the complex show identical vapochromic behaviour. The rapid vapochromic response can be rationalised from the crystal structure, and in combination with quantum-chemical modelling, we provide a complete microscopic picture of the switching mechanism. We discuss how this multiscale design approach can be used to obtain new compounds with tailored VOC selectivity and spectral responses
Upward-going muons and neutrino oscillations
The available upward-going muon data from the Kamiokande, Baksan, MACRO, IMB,
and SuperKamiokande experiments are reviewed and combined. Bounds on the
neutrino mass and mixing parameters are derived for oscillations in two and
three flavors. These bounds are not in significant conflict with the
oscillation solution to the atmospheric neutrino flavor anomaly observed in the
sub-GeV and multi-GeV energy range. The combination of all the available
atmospheric data tends to favor the nu_mu nu_e channel with respect to
the nu_mu nu_tau channel, and to disfavor the threefold maximal mixing
scenario.Comment: 19 pages (RevTeX) + 6 figures (postscript). Requires epsfig.st
Clinical standards for drug-susceptible TB in children and adolescents
BACKGROUND: These clinical standards aim to provide guidance for diagnosis, treatment, and management of drug-susceptible TB in children and adolescents. METHODS: Fifty-two global experts in paediatric TB participated in a Delphi consensus process. After eight rounds of revisions, 51/52 (98%) participants endorsed the final document. RESULTS: Eight standards were identified: Standard 1, Age and developmental stage are critical considerations in the assessment and management of TB; Standard 2, Children and adolescents with symptoms and signs of TB disease should undergo prompt evaluation, and diagnosis and treatment initiation should not depend on microbiological confirmation; Standard 3, Treatment initiation is particularly urgent in children and adolescents with presumptive TB meningitis and disseminated (miliary) TB; Standard 4, Children and adolescents should be treated with an appropriate weight-based regimen; Standard 5, Treating TB infection (TBI) is important to prevent disease; Standard 6, Children and adolescents should receive home-based/community-based treatment support whenever possible; Standard 7, Children, adolescents, and their families should be provided age-appropriate support to optimise engagement in care and clinical outcomes; and Standard 8, Case reporting and contact tracing should be conducted for each child and adolescent. CONCLUSION: These consensus-based clinical standards, which should be adapted to local contexts, will improve the care of children and adolescents affected by TB.National Institutes of HealthRevisiĂłn por pare
Mechanical properties and microstructure of VPS and HVOF CoNiCrAlY coatings
HVOF and VPS coatings were sprayed using a Praxair (CO-210-24) CoNiCrAlY powder. Free standing coatings underwent vacuum annealing at different temperatures for times of up to 840h. Feedstock powder, as-sprayed and annealed coatings were characterised by SEM, EDS and XRD. The hardness and Youngâs modulus of as-sprayed and annealed HVOF and VPS coatings were measured, including determination of Youngâs moduli of the individual phases via nanoindentation and measurement of Youngâs moduli of coatings at temperatures up to 500°C. The Eshelby inclusion model was used to investigate the effect of microstructure on the coatingsâ mechanical properties. The sensitivity of the mechanical properties to microstructural details was confirmed. Youngâs modulus was constant to ~200°C then decreased with increasing measurement temperature. Annealing increased Youngâs modulus due to a combination of decreased porosity and ÎČ volume fraction. Oxide stringers in the HVOF coating maintained its higher hardness than the VPS coating even after annealing
