    Culverted rivers in the historic center of Genoa (Italy) as an emblematic case of human pressure and fluvial landscape changes

    The city of Genoa is internationally known its the recurrent floods, mainly related to the Bisagno River. The high risk is linked to meteo-hydrological hazard and to the urbanisation in hazardous areas and consequently to the high exposure of risk elements. The present research concerns the hydrographic network that characterises the historical center of Genoa, i.e. the natural amphitheatre bordering the Polcevera valley to the W and the Bisagno valley to the E. In this area of just 8.5 km2 there are eight catchments ranging from 0.49 km2 to 2.36 km2 in size: from W to E we recognise the basins of the San Bartolomeo, San Lazzaro, San Teodoro, Lagaccio, Sant'Ugo, Carbonara, Sant'Anna and Torbido streams. These watercourses have been subject to anthropic modifications since the Middle Ages, sometimes with significant diversions, rectifications and channelling; today the watercourse network appears almost entirely artificial, flowing under the streets and buildings of the historic centre. The name of some alleys recalls their presence, which is otherwise not perceptible. Only the upper basin of the Lagaccio and San Lazzaro streams still have a watercourse with a natural riverbed, although the area is still significantly urbanised. The construction of these culverts over time and the modifications they have undergone over the following centuries up to very recent times due to progressive urbanisation have led to a reduction in the hydraulic cross-section, which can lead to a possible flow of water under pressure and the consequent flooding hazard. Therefore a better geographic knowledge of these culverted streams in Genoa historical city is crucial for hazard and risk assessments and for the planning of related hydraulic risk reduction activities

    Tunable control of the hydrophilicity and wettability of conjugated polymers by a postpolymerization modification approach.

    A facile method to prepare hydrophilic polymers by a postpolymerization nucleophillic aromatic substitution reaction of fluoride on an emissive conjugated polymer (CP) backbone is reported. Quantitative functionalization by a series of monofunctionalized ethylene glycol oligomers, from dimer to hexamer, as well as with high molecular weight polyethylene glycol is demonstrated. The length of the ethylene glycol sidechains is shown to have a direct impact on the surface wettability of the polymer, as well as its solubility in polar solvents. However, the energetics and band gap of the CPs remain essentially constant. This method therefore allows an easy way to modulate the wettability and solubility of CP materials for a diverse series of applications

    Translating concerns into action: a detailed qualitative evaluation of an interdisciplinary intervention on medical wards

    Objectives To understand how frontline reports of day-to-day care failings might be better translated into improvement. Design Qualitative evaluation of an interdisciplinary team intervention to capitalise on the frontline experience of care delivery. Prospective clinical team surveillance (PCTS) involved structured interdisciplinary briefings to capture challenges in care delivery, facilitated organisational escalation of the issues they identified, and feedback. Eighteen months of ethnography and two focus groups were conducted with staff taking part in a trial of PCTS. Results PCTS fostered psychological safety – a confidence that the team would not embarrass or punish those who speak up. This was complemented by a hard edge of accountability, whereby team members would regulate their own behaviour in anticipation of future briefings. Frontline concerns were triaged to managers, or resolved autonomously by ward teams, reversing what had been well-established normalisations of deviance. Junior clinicians found a degree of catharsis in airing their concerns, and their teams became more proactive in addressing improvement opportunities. PCTS generated tangible organisational changes, and enabled managers to make a convincing case for investment. However, briefings were constrained by the need to preserve professional credibility, and the relative comfort afforded by the avoidance of accountability. At higher organisational levels, frontline concerns were subject to competition with other priorities, and their resolution was limited by the scale of the challenges they described. Conclusions Prospective safety strategies relying on staff-volunteered data do approximate the realities of frontline care, but still produce acceptable, negotiated accounts, subject to the many interdisciplinary tensions that characterise ward work. Nonetheless, they give managers access to these accounts, and support frontline staff to make incremental changes in their daily work. These are goals for learning healthcare organisations

    Effect of Antioxidant Preparation «Mexidol» on the Protein Components of the Erythrocyte Cytoplasmic Membrane in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis

    Background. Ulcerative colitis is a colon disease accompanied by a systemic inflammatory response with the development of oxidative stress, which leads to structural and functional changes in cell membranes. There are no data on the qualitative and quantitative changes in the protein components of the cytoplasmic membrane in ulcerative colitis under the influence of the antioxidant, membrane-stabilizing drug Mexidol.The article presents the data of our own research, the purpose of which is to study the nature of changes in protein components in the erythrocyte membrane in vitro when exposed to Mexidol (the active substance is oxymethylethyl peridine succinate) in patients with ulcerative colitis during an acute attack.Materials and methods. The study involved 51 patients with ulcerative colitis during the exacerbation period and 30 clinically healthy individuals comparable by sex and age. Ten major protein components of the erythrocyte membrane were evaluated.Results. As a result of the regression analysis, it was shown that in the group of clinically healthy individuals, almost all structural proteins are to varying degrees linked to proteins by glucose transporters and the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase and in patients with ulcerative colitis, the connection of protein components of membrane channels with spectrines is lost. Incubation of red blood cells of patients with ulcerative colitis in a solution of Mexidol in vitro did not affect the protein components of the erythrocyte cytoplasmic membrane. At the same time, in ulcerative colitis patients there was a restoration of spectrin connections with anion transport proteins and a glucose transporter, which were not detected in the initial state. Conclusion. The effect of Mexidol in vitro on the erythrocyte membranes of patients with ulcerative colitis was accompanied by the restoration of structural and functional protein bonds, which can be considered as a beneficial effect of this drug on the erythrocyte membrane under the conditions of the studied pathology

    The discovery and exploration of cryptic species have been profoundly expedited thanks to developments in molecular biology and phylogenetics. In this study, we apply a reverse taxonomy approach to the Brachionus calyciflorus species complex, a commonly studied freshwater monogonont rotifer. By combining phylogenetic, morphometric and morphological analyses, we confirm the existence of four cryptic species that have been recently suggested by a molecular study. Based on these results and according to an exhaustive review of the taxonomic literature, we name each of these four species and provide their taxonomic description alongside a diagnostic key

    Satellites and large doping- and temperature-dependence of electronic properties in hole-doped BaFe2As2

    Over the last years, superconductivity has been discovered in several families of iron-based compounds. Despite intense research, even basic electronic properties of these materials, such as Fermi surfaces, effective electron masses, or orbital characters are still subject to debate. Here, we address an issue that has not been considered before, namely the consequences of dynamical screening of the Coulomb interactions among Fe-d electrons. We demonstrate its importance not only for correlation satellites seen in photoemission spectroscopy, but also for the low-energy electronic structure. From our analysis of the normal phase of BaFe2As2 emerges the picture of a strongly correlated compound with strongly doping- and temperature-dependent properties. In the hole overdoped regime, an incoherent metal is found, while Fermi-liquid behavior is recovered in the undoped compound. At optimal doping, the self-energy exhibits an unusual square-root energy dependence which leads to strong band renormalizations near the Fermi level

    Structural and magnetic phase diagram of CeFeAsO1-xFx and its relationship to high-temperature superconductivity

    We use neutron scattering to study the structural and magnetic phase transitions in the iron pnictides CeFeAsO1-xFx as the system is tuned from a semimetal to a high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductor through Fluorine (F) doping x. In the undoped state, CeFeAsO develops a structural lattice distortion followed by a stripe like commensurate antiferromagnetic order with decreasing temperature. With increasing Fluorine doping, the structural phase transition decreases gradually while the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed before the appearance of superconductivity, resulting an electronic phase diagram remarkably similar to that of the high-Tc copper oxides. Comparison of the structural evolution of CeFeAsO1-xFx with other Fe-based superconductors reveals that the effective electronic band width decreases systematically for materials with higher Tc. The results suggest that electron correlation effects are important for the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in these Fe pnictides.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure

    Electronic voting to encourage interactive lectures: a randomised trial

    Background: Electronic Voting Systems have been used for education in a variety of disciplines. Outcomes from these studies have been mixed. Because results from these studies have been mixed, we examined whether an EVS system could enhance a lecture's effect on educational outcomes. Methods: A cohort of 127 Year 5 medical students at the University of Adelaide was stratified by gender, residency status and academic record then randomised into 2 groups of 64 and 63 students. Each group received consecutive 40-minute lectures on two clinical topics. One group received the EVS for both topics. The other group received traditional teaching only. Evaluation was undertaken with two, 15-question multiple-choice questionnaires (MCQ) assessing knowledge and problem solving and undertaken as a written paper immediately before and after the lectures and repeated online 8–12 weeks later. Standardised institutional student questionnaires were completed for each lecture and independent observers assessed student behaviour during the lectures. Lecturer's opinions were assessed by a questionnaire developed for this study. Results: Two-thirds of students randomised to EVS and 59% of students randomised to traditional lectures attended. One-half of the students in the EVS group and 41% in the traditional group completed all questionnaires. There was no difference in MCQ scores between EVS and traditional lectures (p = 0.785). The cervical cancer lectures showed higher student ranking in favour of EVS in all parameters. The breast cancer lectures showed higher ranking in favour of traditional lectures in 5 of 7 parameters (p < 0.001). The observed higher-order lecturer-students interactions were increased in the EVS lecture for one lecturer and reduced for the other. Both lecturers felt that the EVS lectures were difficult to prepare, that they were able to keep to time in the traditional lectures, that the educational value of both lecture styles was similar, and that they were neutral-to-slightly favourably disposed to continue with the EVS technology. The 2 lecturers disagreed regarding the ease of preparation of the traditional lecture, their ability to keep to time in the EVS lecture, and personal satisfaction with the EVS lecture. The lecturers felt that EVS encouraged student participation and helped identify where students were having difficulty. Conclusion: In this setting, EVS technology used in large group lectures did not offer significant advantages over the more traditional lecture format.Paul M Duggan, Edward Palmer and Peter Devit

    Novel polyomaviruses of nonhuman primates: genetic and serological predictors for the existence of multiple unknown polyomaviruses within the human population.

    Polyomaviruses are a family of small non-enveloped DNA viruses that encode oncogenes and have been associated, to greater or lesser extent, with human disease and cancer. Currently, twelve polyomaviruses are known to circulate within the human population. To further examine the diversity of human polyomaviruses, we have utilized a combinatorial approach comprised of initial degenerate primer-based PCR identification and phylogenetic analysis of nonhuman primate (NHP) polyomavirus species, followed by polyomavirus-specific serological analysis of human sera. Using this approach we identified twenty novel NHP polyomaviruses: nine in great apes (six in chimpanzees, two in gorillas and one in orangutan), five in Old World monkeys and six in New World monkeys. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that only four of the nine chimpanzee polyomaviruses (six novel and three previously identified) had known close human counterparts. To determine whether the remaining chimpanzee polyomaviruses had potential human counterparts, the major viral capsid proteins (VP1) of four chimpanzee polyomaviruses were expressed in E. coli for use as antigens in enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Human serum/plasma samples from both CĂ´te d'Ivoire and Germany showed frequent seropositivity for the four viruses. Antibody pre-adsorption-based ELISA excluded the possibility that reactivities resulted from binding to known human polyomaviruses. Together, these results support the existence of additional polyomaviruses circulating within the human population that are genetically and serologically related to existing chimpanzee polyomaviruses
