    INFORMATION SEEKING AND SHARING BEHAVIOR ON TREATMENT OF MEASLES AMONG CHILD CARETAKERS IN TIMUGAN, LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA, PHILIPPINES

    This study aims to analyze the information seeking and information sharing behavior of child caretakers in Brgy. Timugan, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines and how these affect their choice of health service providers on treatment of measles among their children. Data collected from questionnaires were described and analyzed using frequency counts, mean and percentages, and relationships of variables were tested using Cramer’s V test. Findings showed that majority of the child caretakers were female, belonged to 20-40 years age bracket, married, high school or college graduate with monthly income ranging from Php 5,000 to Php 20,000. The family size was relatively small with at least 1-2 children. The child caretakers were found to be (1) knowledgeable on basic information about measles, such as its symptoms, complications, and danger signs; (2) aware of the importance of vaccination in preventing measles; and (3) sought basic information on prevention, complication, and treatment of measles from Brgy. Health Centers, and private hospital was their topmost health service provider. They sought information only if their child had been infected with measles and shared information sought to their family members through face-to-face communication.     On-line Ferrous Debris Density monitoring in sliding area contacts under boundary lubrication regime

    Tribology experiments with pin on disc configuration are conducted using an oil condition monitoring system. This type of condition monitoring system comprises an oil condition sensor, a moisture sensor and a ferrous debris density sensor based on the principals of Magnetometry. The experiments are conducted under boundary lubrication regime for two hydraulic oils, reference oils with additives and without additives. Controlled experimental conditions facilitate the characterisation of the evolution of wear within the sliding pair. The identification of abnormal trends during the wear process indicates the onset of fault conditions. Results show the ferrous density measurements are not directly related to the wear process because of the influence of particles deposition phenomena. Hence, a direct relationship between the real wear volume loss and the ferrous density measures is difficult to establish. Results reveal the speed of particle deposition depends to a high degree on the size of the particles, the oil viscosity and the capacity of stirring. Therefore, the characterisation of the speed of particle deposition is of relevant importance to provide a real indicator of wear progress and thus enable more information for the effective prediction of faults within machinery

    NeMO-Net The Neural Multi-Modal Observation & Training Network for Global Coral Reef Assessment

    We present NeMO-Net, the Srst open-source deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and interactive learning and training software aimed at assessing the present and past dynamics of coral reef ecosystems through habitat mapping into 10 biological and physical classes. Shallow marine systems, particularly coral reefs, are under significant pressures due to climate change, ocean acidification, and other anthropogenic pressures, leading to rapid, often devastating changes, in these fragile and diverse ecosystems. Historically, remote sensing of shallow marine habitats has been limited to meter-scale imagery due to the optical effects of ocean wave distortion, refraction, and optical attenuation. NeMO-Net combines 3D cm-scale distortion-free imagery captured using NASA FluidCam and Fluid lensing remote sensing technology with low resolution airborne and spaceborne datasets of varying spatial resolutions, spectral spaces, calibrations, and temporal cadence in a supercomputer-based machine learning framework. NeMO-Net augments and improves the benthic habitat classification accuracy of low-resolution datasets across large geographic ad temporal scales using high-resolution training data from FluidCam.NeMO-Net uses fully convolutional networks based upon ResNet and ReSneNet to perform semantic segmentation of remote sensing imagery of shallow marine systems captured by drones, aircraft, and satellites, including WorldView and Sentinel. Deep Laplacian Pyramid Super-Resolution Networks (LapSRN) alongside Domain Adversarial Neural Networks (DANNs) are used to reconstruct high resolution information from low resolution imagery, and to recognize domain-invariant features across datasets from multiple platforms to achieve high classification accuracies, overcoming inter-sensor spatial, spectral and temporal variations.Finally, we share our online active learning and citizen science platform, which allows users to provide interactive training data for NeMO-Net in 2D and 3D, integrated within a deep learning framework.     Chiral magnetization textures stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction during spin-orbit torque switching

    We study the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) on current-induced magnetic switching of a perpendicularly magnetized heavy-metal/ferromagnet/oxide trilayer both experimentally and through micromagnetic simulations. We report the generation of stable helical magnetization stripes for a sufficiently large DMI strength in the switching region, giving rise to intermediate states in the magnetization confirming the essential role of the DMI on switching processes. We compare the simulation and experimental results to a macrospin model, showing the need for a micromagnetic approach.     The Low Redshift survey at Calar Alto (LoRCA)

    The Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature in the power spectrum of galaxies provides a standard ruler to measure the accelerated expansion of the Universe. To extract all available information about dark energy, it is necessary to measure a standard ruler in the local, z<0.2, universe where dark energy dominates most the energy density of the Universe. Though the volume available in the local universe is limited, it is just big enough to measure accurately the long 100 Mpc/h wave-mode of the BAO. Using cosmological N-body simulations and approximate methods based on Lagrangian perturbation theory, we construct a suite of a thousand light-cones to evaluate the precision at which one can measure the BAO standard ruler in the local universe. We find that using the most massive galaxies on the full sky (34,000 sq. deg.), i.e. a K(2MASS)<14 magnitude-limited sample, one can measure the BAO scale up to a precision of 4\% and 1.2\% using reconstruction). We also find that such a survey would help to detect the dynamics of dark energy.Therefore, we propose a 3-year long observational project, named the Low Redshift survey at Calar Alto (LoRCA), to observe spectroscopically about 200,000 galaxies in the northern sky to contribute to the construction of aforementioned galaxy sample.     The Core-Collapse Supernova Rate in Arp299 Revisited

    We present a study of the CCSN rate in nuclei A and B1 of the luminous infrared galaxy Arp299, based on 11 years of Very Large Array monitoring of their radio emission at 8.4 GHz. Significant variations in the nuclear radio flux density can be used to identify the CCSN activity in the absence of high-resolution very long baseline interferometry observations. In the case of the B1-nucleus, the small variations in its measured diffuse radio emission are below the fluxes expected from radio supernovae, thus making it well-suited to detect RSNe through flux density variability. In fact, we find strong evidence for at least three RSNe this way, which results in a lower limit for the CCSN rate of 0.28 +/- 0.16 per year. In the A-nucleus, we did not detect any significant variability and found a SN detection threshold luminosity which allows only the detection of the most luminous RSNe known. Our method is basically blind to normal CCSN explosions occurring within the A-nucleus, which result in too small variations in the nuclear flux density, remaining diluted by the strong diffuse emission of the nucleus itself. Additionally, we have attempted to find near-infrared counterparts for the earlier reported RSNe in the Arp299 nucleus A, by comparing NIR adaptive optics images from the Gemini-N telescope with contemporaneous observations from the European VLBI Network. However, we were not able to detect NIR counterparts for the reported radio SNe within the innermost regions of nucleus A. While our NIR observations were sensitive to typical CCSNe at 300 mas from the centre of the nucleus A, suffering from extinction up to A_v~15 mag, they were not sensitive to such highly obscured SNe within the innermost nuclear regions where most of the EVN sources were detected.     Electromagnetic waves in a wormhole geometry

    We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves through a static wormhole. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to a one-dimensional Schr\"odinger-like equation with a barrier-type potential. Using numerical methods, we calculate the transmission coefficient as a function of the energy.     Multiterminal conductance of a floquet topological insulator

    We report on simulations of the dc conductance and quantum Hall response of a Floquet topological insulator using Floquet scattering theory. Our results reveal that laser-induced edge states lead to quantum Hall plateaus once imperfect matching with the nonilluminated leads is lessened. The magnitude of the Hall plateaus, however, is not directly related to the number and chirality of all the edge states at a given energy, as usual. Instead, the plateaus are dominated by those edge states adding to the time-averaged density of states. Therefore, the dc quantum Hall conductance of a Floquet topological insulator is not directly linked to topological invariants of the full Floquet bands.publishedVersionFil: Foa Torres, Luis Eduardo Francisco.
