Background and Purpose: Vocabulary is the fundamental aspect of a language. However, second language (L2) learners often perceive vocabulary learning as boring and difficult. As such, various efforts must be made by teachers to empower pupils’ vocabulary base to be able to be competent in the target language. Hence, this study attempts to address the use of blended learning on pupils’ vocabulary development and motivation.   Methodology: This research adopted the quantitative research design. The research participants consisted of two classes of primary school pupils chosen through purposive sampling. The pupils were divided into the experimental group and the control group. The instruments used were pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires. An independent t-test was used to compare the mean score to see any significant difference in terms of pupils’ pre-test and post-test scores whereas mean interpretation was used to determine pupils’ level of motivation.   Findings: The results revealed that pupils who learned through blended learning performed better in terms of vocabulary development compared to the pupils who learned through traditional learning. Similarly, pupils have high motivation towards blended learning instructions. It is apparent that pupils become motivated learners when their need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are fulfilled.   Contributions: This research aids teachers in constructing suitable blended learning environments for content delivery as an alternative way for students to interact with information in preparation for classroom work. Keywords: Blended learning, vocabulary development, motivation, ESL classroom, purposive sampling.   Cite as: Teik Hong, A. L., & Stapa, M. (2023). Get PDF
Background and Purpose: Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) in their report projected that over 4.5 trillion dollars are globally lost due to fraud, with individual organizations losing about 5 per cent of their revenues to fraud annually. Thus, organizations need to understand what contributes to fraud from an individual to organizational perspective, so that strategies to mitigate fraud are formulated. The objective of this paper is to identify various fraud-related theories used in research and their evolution. Subsequently, this study tries to identify the most commonly used fraud theory, approach and unit of analysis.   Methodology: This paper employed a systematic review process and the name of the theory was used as the keyword in the Scopus database to identify papers that discussed the theories. A total of 342 papers were initially identified and analysed after which repeated papers were eliminated. Following this, 39 most recent papers were further analysed to identify the most common theories, research approaches and units of analysis, used in fraud research.   Findings: The analysis found that fraud theories comprised of theories discussing individual factors and organizational factors, which contribute to fraud. The findings further reveal that the Fraud Triangle Theory is the most frequently applied theory in fraud research, where quantitative approach is most adopted with individuals as a unit of analysis.   Contributions: This paper contributes to the growing interest in the study related to fraud by providing a comprehensive analysis of theories related to fraud by bringing together most commonly used theories in fraud research.   Keywords: Fraud theories, theoretical review, social control theory, theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behaviour.   Cite as: Rasheed, F., Said, J., & Khan, N. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAPABILITIES AND ENTERPRISE RESILIENCE OF STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES FOR SUSTAINABLE COMPETITIVENESS: THE MEDIATING ROLE OF LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES

    Get PDF
Background and Purpose: In today's unpredictable, uncertain, complex, ambiguous, and interconnected environment, businesses face various challenges and uncertainties that are anticipated will intensify and become more frequent in the future. In this harsh environment, maintaining sustainable competitiveness is difficult. Information Technology Capabilities (ITCs) are an important element that determines a company's success or failure as well as its Resilience (ER). Given the complexity and uncertainty of today's business world, businesses with good information collection, analysis, and use can anticipate changes and decrease delays. Enterprises should collect high-quality information to meet modern business settings. Business resilience depends on the ability to gather and process resources to handle environmental uncertainty. Enterprises should use information, knowledge, experiences, and other resources to build resilience. The leadership of top management is essential for ensuring the organisation's sustainability and attaining its objectives. This study applies the concept of dynamic capability to assess the impact of ITCs on Indonesian SOEs and their subsidiaries. Additionally, this study investigates leadership capabilities (LCs) as a mediator between ITCs and ER. Due to their vital role in the Indonesian economy and the paucity of research on State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) resilience and dynamic capabilities, particularly in the emerging market, this research focuses on Indonesian SOEs and their subsidiaries.   Methodology: The study examined 322 valid data from online surveys using questionnaires to Indonesia SOEs and their subsidiaries’ board of directors and senior management. The data is analysed using SmartPLS 3.   Findings: The research demonstrates that ITCs enhance ER. LCs improved the enterprise's resiliency. The relationship between ITCs and ER is mediated through LCs.    Contributions: The findings may expand the scope of dynamic capability theory to include resilience. The findings extend the methodology by adopting a quantitative and online survey of SOEs in emerging countries and demonstrate to SOE management and regulators that ER can be fostered by strengthening dynamic capabilities and risk management practices. The findings recommend that policymakers develop a road map, scenario, and strategies to ensure the long-term viability of SOEs.   Keywords: Dynamic capabilities, enterprise resilience, Indonesia, information technology capabilities, leadership capabilities, state-owned enterprises.   Cite as: Lisdiono, P., Said, J., Yusoff, H., Hermawan, A. Background and Purpose: With the acceleration of mobile payment usage in the daily routine, this study intends to examine the determinant factors on the users’ behavioural intention on the Sarawak Pay using the theory of reasoned action (TRA), technology acceptance model (TAM), unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), and a modified model.   Methodology: A total of 195 Sarawak Pay users was selected using the purposive sampling technique to collect their responses through the questionnaire-based online survey. The PLS-SEM was utilised to examine the proposed hypotheses.   Findings: The study found that the modified model had the greatest explanatory and predictive power than the other conventional models. Moreover, the performance expectancy, facilitating conditions and attitude positively influenced the behavioural intention and use behaviour on the Sarawak Pay, while effort expectancy had a contrary effect. Furthermore, the social influence failed to impact the Sarawak Pay users’ behavioural intention and their use behaviour.     Contributions: The findings offered a clear understanding of the drivers and inhibitors that inspired the users’ behavioural intention and their use behaviour on the Sarawak Pay, as it had a critical implication for the Sarawak government. This evidence was derived from three conventional models and a modified model.   Keywords: M-payment, mobile payment, unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, technology acceptance model, theory of reasoned action.   Cite as: Ling, P.-S. Background and Purpose: Generation Y employees often have frequent job dissatisfaction with the private sector, causing job-hopping. The dissatisfaction has been identified as related to the problems in the workplace and family. Due to the fact that the problems have not been much highlighted; hence, this paper aims to investigate the impact of Work-Life Balance (WLB) on Generation Y's job satisfaction in Bangladesh's private sectors.    Methodology: This descriptive case study adopted a quantitative method to reach the research objectives. In this quantitative study, Smart Partial Least Square (PLS) was used to empirically test the model and mediating effects of the extrinsic motivational factors between work-life balance and job satisfaction. Data was collected through survey questionnaires with 24 items adopted from the previous studies; six from work-life balance, six from job satisfaction, and twelve from extrinsic motivation. A total of 500 usable samples were collected randomly from small private entrepreneur industries in Bangladesh. Findings: The results showed a significant positive relationship between work-life balance, job satisfaction, and extrinsic motivation of Generation Y. In the case of ascertaining the mediating effect, the extrinsic factors are substantial. However, the proposed strategies on Gen Y’s job satisfaction and the mediating effects of extrinsic motivational factors have not been investigated either in the Bangladeshi context or any other context.   Contributions: The findings and recommendations of this manuscript are valuable to the relevant parties, especially the stakeholders in the private sectors. The government, leadership, and management are more likely to understand employees' job satisfaction among Generation Y in this study. The outcomes of the research help to formulate and redesign job satisfaction strategies for organizational productivity and overall success. The study contributes to the body of knowledge by identifying the causal relationships of WLB, extrinsic motivational factors, and employees' job satisfaction among Generation Y.    Keywords: Extrinsic motivation, generation Y, job satisfaction, work-life balance.   Cite as: Kabir Bhuiyan, M. Background and Purpose: Recently, flipped learning has become prevalent as a teaching and learning approach in international educational settings. A commonly cited advantage is to do self-study at home and to spend valuable classroom time on meaningful interactive learning activities. After the start of Covid-19 pandemic, the sudden transition to online teaching required many institutions to adopt a flipped learning approach. The current study was conducted at one of such institutions, namely Dhofar University in Oman. The aim of this paper is to identify the challenges met by both teachers and students using flipped learning during this transition as well as the solutions they developed to cope with them.   Methodology: This study implemented a mixed methods design for which the data were collected from two questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. One questionnaire was for teachers with 14 responses while the other was for students and could obtain responses from 68 students from the target population. From the list of teacher respondents, 10 were interviewed for deeper discussion of flipped learning context. The Questionnaires results were statistically calculated and descriptively analysed, whereas the interviews were thematically scrutinized.   Findings: The researchers found several major challenges including increased workload, lack of training, resistance to change, lacking IT skills, technical issues, non-completion of homework tasks and non-participation in live sessions. Teachers' resilience in the face of these challenges was noteworthy; especially in the form of peer support groups. The suggestions made by the teaching faculty for solutions are reported and discussed in the relevant sections of the article with reference to various research studies from different contexts.   Contributions: Despite the small scale and the specific context of the study, the results and discussion provide useful food for thought to educational practitioners and decision makers in wider international contexts when it comes to flipped learning challenges and coping mechanisms.    Keywords: Flipped learning, ELT, challenges, solutions, higher education.   Cite as: Eissa, A., Yapar, O., & Abugohar, M. Get PDF
Background and Purpose: This study aimed to understand banking practices to legitimise their role in society and meet stakeholder needs in terms of their products and services. This study narrowed its scope to use the underpinning thrust of value-based intermediation (VBI) as it is a primary pillar of the VBI framework. Towards these same ends, the study also sought to gauge how banks integrated their products and services with the framework.   Methodology: This study employed the triangulation approach, which comprised of a content analysis of annual reports of the bank and trend analysis of court cases. This study used Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (BIMB) as an explorative study.   Findings: The findings indicated a decrease of total occurrences over the years on litigation cases involving BIMB, related to know-your-customers compliance. Meanwhile, the analysis of annual reports of the bank indicated that shariah non-compliance incidents are due to operational failures and lack of shariah knowledge among the staff. This study highlighted the need for the banks to strengthen the know-your-customer compliance, besides enhancing and promoting Islamic financial literacy and ethics to their stakeholders.   Contributions: This study contributes a novelty in this area of study by using data triangulation on court cases and annual reports to provide a more comprehensive perspective on the issue. This study also added to the current literature on VBI, especially within Malaysian context.   Keywords: Corporate responsibility, due diligence, know-your-customer, Islamic ethics, financial literacy.   Cite as: Talib, S.
