    Landau-Ginzburg method applied to finite fermion systems: Pairing in Nuclei

    Given the spectrum of a Hamiltonian, a methodology is developed which employs the Landau-Ginsburg method for characterizing phase transitions in infinite systems to identify phase transition remnants in finite fermion systems.     Measurement of migration of a humeral head resurfacing prosthesis using radiostereometry without implant marking: An experimental study

    Today, the shoulder joint is the third most commonly replaced joint after the hip and knee joints and the incidence is increasing. In Sweden, 1863 primary Shoulder Arthroplasties and 195 revisions were performed in 2017. The most common diagnoses are Osteoarthritis and irreparable tears of the rotator cuff, with or without arthropathy, often referred to as cuff tear arthropathy. Different Shoulder Arthroplasty (SA) concepts include anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA), hemiarthroplasty (HSA) and reversed shoulder arthroplasty, but also humeral head resurfacing (HHR) and stemless arthroplasties. All concepts offer pain relief, improvement of function and in quality of life for the different diagnoses. Unfortunately, there are sometimes complications after SA. They involve periprosthetic joint infection, humeral and glenoid fractures, stress shielding, loosening of the glenoid and humeral component but also glenoid erosion and cuff rupture. Some of these complications are most common within 1 year after operation, some after several years, both may lead to a revision. This, together with the fact that new designs of implants and methods of fixation of SA continues to develop, stresses the importance of continuous monitoring of implant survival and follow-up. The overall aim of this thesis was to describe clinical examples of different methods to assess the outcome after Shoulder Arthroplasty. The most common methods are clinical examination, radiographic assessment, Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM), National Joint registries, where revisions are an important outcome, but also Clinical Trials. All of these methods are used in one or more of the 4 papers in this thesis and shows the complexity of the topic and the practical work. In paper I we used Radio Stereometric Analysis (RSA) in an experimental set-up and concluded that marker-free RSA can be used for a humeral head resurfacing arthroplasty. In paper II we used data from the Swedish Shoulder Arthroplasty Registry (SSAR) with PROM and revisions to conclude that age is the only factor that affects revision when comparing HSA and HHR. Paper III is a long-time follow-up of a Randomized controlled study where we used radiological assessment, PROM and revisions. The conclusion was that both TSA and HSA develop severe radiological changes 10 year after primary operation. Paper IV is a prospective RSA cohort study where we also evaluated PROM and revisions. The conclusion is that HHR seems to obtain a secure fixation in the humerus, after an initial migration. But also that the prostheses shows continuous glenoid wear. The main conclusion of this thesis is that patient’s operated with SA needs continuous monitoring and several methods may be used to evaluate the outcome

    Neutrino propagation and spin zero sound in hot neutron matter with Skyrme interactions

    We present microscopic calculations of neutrino propagation in hot neutron matter above nuclear density within the framework of the Random Phase Approximation . Calculations are performed for non- degenerate neutrinos using various Skyrme effective interactions. We find that for densities just above nuclear density, spin zero sound is present at zero temperature for all Skyrme forces considered. However it disappears rapidly with increasing temperature due to a strong Landau damping. As a result the mean-free path is given, to a good approximation, by the mean field value. Because of the renormalization of the bare mass in the mean field, the medium is more transparent as compared to the free case. We find, in contrast, that at several times nuclear density, a new type of behavior sets in due to the vicinity of a magnetic instability. It produces a strong reduction of the mean free path. The corresponding transition density however occurs in a region where inputs from more realistic calculations are necessary for the construction of a reliable Skyrme type parametrization.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Exercise Training in Pregnancy for obese women (ETIP): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

    <p/> <p>Background</p> <p>Both maternal pre-pregnancy obesity and excessive gestational weight gain are increasing in prevalence and associated with a number of adverse pregnancy outcomes for both mother and child. Observational studies regarding physical activity in pregnancy have found reduced weight gain in active mothers, as well as reduced risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. There is however a lack of high quality, randomized controlled trials on the effects of regular exercise training in pregnancy, especially those with a pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) at or above 30 kg/m<sup>2</sup>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We are conducting a randomised, controlled trial in Norway with two parallel arms; one intervention group and one control group. We will enroll 150 previously sedentary, pregnant women with a pre-pregnancy BMI at or above 30 kg/m<sup>2</sup>. The intervention group will meet for organized exercise training three times per week, starting in gestation week 14 (range 12-16). The control group will get standard antenatal care. The main outcome measure will be weight gain from baseline to delivery. Among the secondary outcome measures are changes in exercise capacity, endothelial function, physical activity level, body composition, serum markers of cardiovascular risk, incontinence, lumbopelvic pain and cardiac function from baseline to gestation week 37 (range 36-38). Offspring outcome measures include anthropometric variables at birth, Apgar score, as well as serum markers of inflammation and metabolism in cord blood.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The results of this trial will provide knowledge about effects of regular exercise training in previously sedentary, obese pregnant women. If the program proves effective in reducing gestational weight gain and adverse pregnancy outcomes, such programs should be considered as part of routine pregnancy care for obese women.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov: <a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01243554">NCT01243554</a></p

    The embedding of transnational entrepreneurs in diaspora networks:Leveraging the assets of foreignness

    In this paper we examine how foreign actors capitalize on their ethnic identity to gain skills and capabilities that enable them to operate in a new and strange environment. We explore the mechanisms by which Bulgarian entrepreneurs in London use their ethnic identity to develop competitive advantage and business contacts. We find that the entrepreneurs studied gain access to a diaspora network, which enables them to develop essential business capabilities and integrate knowledge from both home and host country environments. The diaspora community possesses a collective asset (transactive memory) that allows its members to remove competition from the interfirm level to the network level (i.e., diaspora networks vs. networks of native businesspeople). Additionally, the cultural identity and networks to which community members have access provide bridging capabilities that allow diaspora businesspeople to make links to host country business partners and thus embed themselves in the host country environment. Thus, this paper adds to the growing body of work showing how foreignness can serve as an asset in addition to its better-known role as a liability

    Simple word of mouth or complex resource orchestration for overcoming liabilities of outsidership

    Drawing on the resource orchestration literature, we explore the processes by which transnational entrepreneurs offset the liabilities of outsidership they face in their host country. We show how these entrepreneurs’ outsidership with respect to domestic business networks of the host country is compensated by their involvement in diaspora networks. Our second contribution lies in an extension of the resource orchestration framework, as we show that sequencing of resource orchestration processes is important for the implementation of the entrepreneurs’ strategy for using their embeddedness within the diaspora network for enhancing their competitiveness, and can lead to lead to groupings of activities that differ from the groupings found in the original version of the framework

    Alfven: magnetosphere-ionosphere connection explorers

    The aurorae are dynamic, luminous displays that grace the night skies of Earth’s high latitude regions. The solar wind emanating from the Sun is their ultimate energy source, but the chain of plasma physical processes leading to auroral displays is complex. The special conditions at the interface between the solar wind-driven magnetosphere and the ionospheric environment at the top of Earth’s atmosphere play a central role. In this Auroral Acceleration Region (AAR) persistent electric fields directed along the magnetic field accelerate magnetospheric electrons to the high energies needed to excite luminosity when they hit the atmosphere. The “ideal magnetohydrodynamics” description of space plasmas which is useful in much of the magnetosphere cannot be used to understand the AAR. The AAR has been studied by a small number of single spacecraft missions which revealed an environment rich in wave-particle interactions, plasma turbulence, and nonlinear acceleration processes, acting on a variety of spatio-temporal scales. The pioneering 4-spacecraft Cluster magnetospheric research mission is now fortuitously visiting the AAR, but its particle instruments are too slow to allow resolve many of the key plasma physics phenomena. The Alfvén concept is designed specifically to take the next step in studying the aurora, by making the crucial high-time resolution, multi-scale measurements in the AAR, needed to address the key science questions of auroral plasma physics. The new knowledge that the mission will produce will find application in studies of the Sun, the processes that accelerate the solar wind and that produce aurora on other planet
