Ptychographic X-ray computed tomography of extended colloidal networks in food emulsions

    Get PDF
As a main structural level in colloidal food materials, extended colloidal networks are important for texture and rheology. By obtaining the 3D microstructure of the network, macroscopic mechanical properties of the material can be inferred. However, this approach is hampered by the lack of suitable non-destructive 3D imaging techniques with submicron resolution. We present results of quantitative ptychographic X-ray computed tomography applied to a palm kernel oil based oil-in-water emulsion. The measurements were carried out at ambient pressure and temperature. The 3D structure of the extended colloidal network of fat globules was obtained with a resolution of around 300 nm. Through image analysis of the network structure, the fat globule size distribution was computed and compared to previous findings. In further support, the reconstructed electron density values were within 4% of reference values.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Food Structur

Invariants of pseudogroup actions: Homological methods and Finiteness theorem

    Get PDF
We study the equivalence problem of submanifolds with respect to a transitive pseudogroup action. The corresponding differential invariants are determined via formal theory and lead to the notions of k-variants and k-covariants, even in the case of non-integrable pseudogroup. Their calculation is based on the cohomological machinery: We introduce a complex for covariants, define their cohomology and prove the finiteness theorem. This implies the well-known Lie-Tresse theorem about differential invariants. We also generalize this theorem to the case of pseudogroup action on differential equations.Comment: v2: some remarks and references addee

Crystal and magnetic structure of La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_{4} : role of the orbital degree of freedom

The crystal and magnetic structure of La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 (0<x<0.7) has been studied by diffraction techniques and high resolution capacitance dilatometry. There is no evidence for a structural phase transition like those found in isostructural cuprates or nickelates, but there are significant structural changes induced by the variation of temperature and doping which we attribute to a rearrangement of the orbital occupation.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR

The amalgamated duplication of a ring along a multiplicative-canonical ideal

After recalling briefly the main properties of the amalgamated duplication of a ring RR along an ideal II, denoted by R\JoinI, we restrict our attention to the study of the properties of R\JoinI, when II is a multiplicative canonical ideal of RR \cite{hhp}. In particular, we study when every regular fractional ideal of RIR\Join I is divisorial

The Hilbert basis method for D-flat directions and the superpotential

    Get PDF
We discuss, using the Hilbert basis method, how to efficiently construct a complete basis for D-flat directions in supersymmetric Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. We extend the method to discrete (R and non-R) symmetries. This facilitates the construction of a basis of all superpotential terms in a theory with given symmetries.Comment: 11 pages; a related mathematica code can be found at http://einrichtungen.ph.tum.de/T30e/codes/NonAbelianHilbert

Banks' risk assessment of Swedish SMEs

    Get PDF
Building on the literatures on asymmetric information and risk taking, this paper applies conjoint experiments to investigate lending officers' probabilities of supporting credit to established or existing SMEs. Using a sample of 114 Swedish lending officers, we test hypotheses concerning how information on the borrower's ability to repay the loan; alignment of risk preferences; and risk sharing affect their willingness to grant credit. Results suggest that features that reduce the risk to the bank and shift the risk to the borrower have the largest impact. The paper highlights the interaction between factors that influence the credit decision. Implications for SMEs, banks and research are discussed

Evidence for Jahn-Teller distortions at the antiferromagnetic transition in LaTiO3_3

LaTiO3_3 is known as Mott-insulator which orders antiferromagnetically at TN=146T_{\rm N}=146 K. We report on results of thermal expansion and temperature dependent x-ray diffraction together with measurements of the heat capacity, electrical transport measurements, and optical spectroscopy in untwinned single crystals. At TNT_{\rm N} significant structural changes appear, which are volume conserving. Concomitant anomalies are also observed in the dc-resistivity, in bulk modulus, and optical reflectivity spectra. We interpret these experimental observations as evidence of orbital order.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 066403 (2003
