Influence of vaccine-preventable diseases and HIV infection on demand for an infectious diseases service in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, over 22 years – Part II (1995-2016)
Patients’ data during daily clinical care are extremely important for improving the allocation of healthcare resources and for assessing healthcare demands. The prospective gathering of these data over decades allowed us to describe the trends of infectious diseases in a tertiary hospital. The results concerning the period between 1965 and 1994 described the exponential increase in the incidence of HIV infection and its important effects on our institutional mortality. The present study describes the demand for the same hospital between 1995 and 2016. There were 4,691 admissions and the main causes of admissions were, in descending order, HIV infection (1,312, 28.0%), noninfectious diseases (447, 9.5%), meningoencephalitis (432, 9.2%), soft tissue infections (427; 9.1%), tuberculosis (272, 5.8%), pneumonias (212, 4.5%) and leptospirosis (212, 4.5%). There were 864 readmissions; most due to HIV infections (65.2%). The institutional mortality fell from 16.9% in the first two years to 5.0% in the last two years of the study. The case-fatality rates among the HIV patients decreased from more than 40% to approximately 5% over the study period. In the last two decades, the hospital experienced a decrease in demand due to vaccine-preventable diseases. The demand for children has fallen and the demand for patients over the age of 50 has increased. These results reflect the improvement in public health standards over more than half a century and the positive effects of the National Immunization Program. They also illustrate the sharp decline in the HIV case-fatality rate after the introduction of combined antiretroviral therap
Dynamic frequency assignment fiber-wireless access networks
Dissertação de mestrado, Engenharia Informática, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade do Algarve, 2014This dissertation focuses on the Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) access networks, more specifically on
the problem of assigning frequencies to maintain connectivity and acceptable standards of service
quality in face of changes in the pattern of traffic flows in the network. Mainly realized on
radio and fiber technologies, these networks form an hybrid architecture comprising an optical
section and a wireless section that provides a feasible paradigm for high bandwidth and ubiquity
at new access network areas. In these FiWi scenarios, in particular when multi-radio and
multi-channel configurations are used, an effective frequency assignment should be done to radios
so that higher throughput and low delay can be obtained and the best of such architectures
is achieved. However, traffic conditions may change over time, meaning that radio channel configurations
may be outdated and new reconfigurations can be done to improve network performance.
To cope with the increasing demand for bandwidth, fiber to the home/premises/building
(FTTX) technologies were massively deployed at the back-end. These technologies are characterized
by the huge bandwidth capacity and the absence of active devices on the network plant,
which is an advantage for power saving. On the other hand, at the front-end, wireless mesh networks
(WMN) are expected to provide mobility and converge different wireless technologies
to provide high-speed and huge bandwidth connectivity to the end user. In this dissertation,
the frequency reassignment problem in the context of FiWi access networks is discussed and a
state-of-art on the subject is proposed. Also, two methodologies for frequency reconfiguration
planning are proposed along with their mathematical formalization, and are evaluated by simulation.
In one of the strategies, NBR, the algorithm prioritizes channel assignment according to
the relative position of nodes and their gateways, while in the other, RBR, nodes are processed
as their routes toward the gateways are traversed. A discrete event simulation model to evaluate
the performance of the proposed frequency reassignment algorithms was developed using OMNeT++
framework. Simulation results showing that RBR is the algorithm that better exploits
channel reconfigurations are presented and discussed

The olive oil sector is an important economic sector in Portugal. Portugal is a major consumer of this product, and it is one of the main European producers (the fourth largest producer in Europe, behind Greece, Italy and Spain) and exporters. Nationally, the region of Tras-os-Montes is, according to the Agricultural Census, the second largest olive producer region, and is the major national provider of the table olives. At a time when environmental awareness influences in consumers choices, it is increasingly important to have a "environmentally friendly" production. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is an important tool when addressing environmental impact from food products. The LCA is a modeling system based on the inventory of all necessary flows from processes associated to a particular product system, and then making an assessment of the impacts caused to the environment. This study addresses three production olives (F1, F2, and F3) and two oil presses (P2 and P3), and the differentiated characteristics of its activities. For a correct analysis, the methodology was based on ISO's 14040 and 14044 and on the parameterization mentioned in the latest version of the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The results of the evaluation focus on the interactions between different olive farms and the olive oil mills to provide a total of six scenarios, and are expressed by measuring the intensity of impact assessment indicators. This study evaluated six indicators: Climate Change, Terrestrial Acidification, Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential, Ozone Depletion, Eutrophication Potential and Land Occupation. The results are a interaction between olive production (F1, F2 and F3) and olive transformation (2P and 3P). Overall, the results show that upstream processes (e.g. production of fertilizers and fuel production) have a significant environmental impact and because of that, the olive production have higher impact than olive transformation, where the packaging have the main impact

Higiene e Segurança no Trabalho. Por este motivo, a perceção do risco deverá ser tida em consideração no planeamento, desenvolvimento e implementação dos programas de segurança e higiene no trabalho, em especial no que diz respeito ao desenvolvimento de planos formativos.ABSTRACT - Risk assessment is the basis for effective management of health and safety at work and the key to reducing work-related accidents and occupational diseases. The fact that studies related to prostheses and orthoses industry, and occupational health have not been addressed by the scientific community, justify the relevant's of this study. The present work intends to study the perception of occupational risks by workers in prosthetics and orthotics labs, namely the relation of safety behaviors with accidents and how the perception can influence the behaviors and attitudes of employees. This study involved 57 individuals working in prosthetics and orthotics labs, of 20 institutions spread over the five sub-regions of the statistics region of Lisbon and Tagus Valley. A questionnaire containing 118 questions divided into 5 blocks corresponding to different dimensions analyzed: 1. Social characterization of the sample; 2. Risk at the workplace - Perception of risks and climate security; 3. Security at Workplace - Motivation knowledge and Behaviors security; 4. Accident Experiment; 5. Health and Safety at Work, was applied. Results suggest that the perception of individual risk and other related factors (training/safety knowledge), are a critical component of the behavior of professionals in orthopedics labs. For this reason, the perception of the risk should be taken into consideration in the planning, development and implementation of programs of health and safety at work, particularly with regard to the development of training plans
