A text mining and topic modelling perspective of ethnic marketing research
This study presents an enhanced automated approach based on literature analysis and synthesis for establishing the dimensions of the ethnic marketing literature, covering a set of 239 journal articles published by nine major publishers. The approach reported is enhanced by two novel procedures to address previously identified limitations, namely: definition of a relevant dictionary based on both a sufficient lexicon extracted from a definition of the core theme and a conditional dictionary, with related but non-core terms; and a visually appealing pictorial representation to summarize the discovered topics. The application of the method to ethnic marketing indicates that ethnic marketing research is characterized by high conceptual heterogeneity, although a clear definition of "ethnic marketing" is imperative for research development. Overall, the paper advances an approach with considerable scalability advantages when compared with extant approaches, an important issue to consider when textual sources become big data.- (undefined
A cross-cultural case study of consumers' communications about a new technological product
Using a case-study based approach, this research contributes to the standardisation versus adaptation debate in global marketing. It analyses the influence of the local culture dimension reflected in consumers’ comments in the Facebook platform regarding a new global technological product. Galaxy S8/S8+, launched worldwide in 2017. Consumers’ comments about this new smartphone were gathered and analysed for three cultural distinct English-speaking countries: Australia, India, and South Africa.
The analysis’ procedure consisted of a text mining and topic modelling approach, including sentiment classification analysis, to discern and understand consumers’ responses to global brand communications.
The findings indicate that cultural aspects still play a key role in consumers’ reactions to the product in each country, justifying the continued need for marketing strategies that conflate pursuing economies of scale with accounting for the cultural sensitivities of demand at country level. Evidence of consumers attitudes’ and behaviours’ homogenisation across countries is still limited
Fungicide application technology for controlling the sugarcane orange rust
With the epidemic onset of the sugarcane orange rust, fungicide applications of the Strobilurins and Triazoles groups have become necessary in susceptible varieties. This study aimed at evaluating the operational conditions of fungicide application in sugarcane (SP81-3250 variety), in relation to the spray deposition on the upper canopy and the effectiveness of the orange rust control. Treatments consisted of two application volumes (30 L ha-1 or 40 L ha-1) and three nozzle deflection angles (0 º, 90 º or 135 º), plus a ground application at the rate of 200 L ha-1, sprayed with a uniform flat spray nozzle of air induction. The ground application resulted in the smallest and the greatest spray deposition on sugarcane leaves and on the soil, respectively. The aerial application at the rate of 30 L ha-1, sprayed by hollow cone nozzles, at a deflection angle of 135 º, provided the best sugarcane orange rust control.
Even with studies to confront different risk models for gold, there is no consensus about what is the best approach or models when considering the presence of extreme negative values. To that, we employ a backtesting in conditional models with distinct distributions in order to estimate VaR and ES risk measures and, thus, find a pattern for the risk of investments in gold. We verify that the EVT approach has more conservative and volatile risk estimates, with satisfactory results in extreme situations. Modeling and simulating a textile production system
This paper presents a study for a production scheduling
problem in a textile company, specifically in the weaving
preparation area. Basically, the processing orders can be
considered as sequential working steps trough three
operations (charging - weaving - discharging), and the goal
is to minimize time variation and to avoid delays. The
machine utilization should be as higher as possible due to
short delivering deadlines. The production unit has got 4 of
these weaving machines functioning at the same time.
Four dispatching rules were tested in order to find the best
solution. The optimization procedure highlighted some
interesting issues that are discussed in this paper
Discovering ethnic minority business research directions using text mining and topic modelling
Moro, S., Pires, G., Rita, P., Cortez, P., & Ramos, R. F. (2022). Discovering ethnic minority business research directions using text mining and topic modelling. Journal of Research in Marketing and Entrepreneurship. https://doi.org/10.1108/JRME-01-2022-0004Abstract Purpose This study aims to unveil within the current academic literature the principal directions in the ethnic entrepreneurship and small business marketing research context. Design/methodology/approach An automated literature analysis procedure was undertaken, attempting to cover all literature published on the subject since 1962. A total of 188 articles were analysed using text mining and topic modelling. Findings The results show a lack of framing of ethnic entrepreneurship literature outside the narrower scope of migration. Some core themes were found (e.g. network, diversity) around which several other themes orbit, including both related issues to the ethnic factor (e.g. barriers and minorities) and managerial issues (e.g. marketing and production). Originality/value Ethnic minority business and small business marketing research has seen a growing number of publications. However, a careful review of existing work is missing.authorsversionepub_ahead_of_prin
Transgenerational inheritance of DNA hypomethylation in Daphnia magna in response to salinity stress
Epigenetic mechanisms have been found to play important roles in environmental stress response and regulation. These can, theoretically, be transmitted to future unexposed generations, yet few studies have shown persisting stress-induced transgenerational effects, particularly in invertebrates. Here, we focus on the aquatic microcrustacean Daphnia, a parthenogenetic model species, and its response to salinity stress. Salinity is a serious threat to freshwater ecosystems and a relevant form of environmental perturbation affecting freshwater ecosystems. We exposed one generation of D. magna to high levels of salinity (F0) and found that the exposure provoked specific methylation patterns that were transferred to the three consequent nonexposed generations (F1, F2, and F3). This was the case for the hypomethylation of six protein-coding genes with important roles in the organisms' response to environmental change: DNA damage repair, cytoskeleton organization, and protein synthesis. This suggests that epigenetic changes in Daphnia are particularly targeted to genes involved in coping with general cellular stress responses. Our results highlight that epigenetic marks are affected by environmental stressors and can be transferred to subsequent unexposed generations. Epigenetic marks could therefore prove to be useful indicators of past or historic pollution in this parthenogenetic model system. Furthermore, no life history costs seem to be associated with the maintenance of hypomethylation across unexposed generations in Daphnia following a single stress exposure
