Stimuli-responsive graphene-based hydrogel driven by disruption of triazine hydrophobic interactions

The study reported here concerns the preparation of a novel graphene-diaminotriazine (G-DAT) nanocomposite hydrogel for application in the drug delivery field. The hybrid nature of this material is founded on two key elements: the presence of the DAT backbone induced the formation of hydrophobic regions that allowed efficient loading of a series of drugs of increasing hydrophobicity (Metronidazole, Benzocaine, Ibuprofen, Naproxen and Imipramine), while simultaneously endowing swelling-induced pH-responsiveness to the hydrogel. Additionally, the incorporation of graphene was found to interfere with these hydrophobic domains through favourable non-covalent interactions, thus leading to the partial disruption of these aggregates. As a consequence, graphene facilitated and enhanced the release of model hydrophobic drug Imipramine in a synergistic manner with the pH trigger, and increased the swelling capacities and improved mechanical performance. This hybrid hydrogel can therefore be envisaged as a proof-of-concept system for the release of hydrophobic compounds in the field of drug delivery

La libertad como condición de posibilidad del crecimiento humano según Antonio Millán-Puelles

El objetivo del presente trabajo es mostrar, a partir de la especulación metafísica de Antonio Millán-Puelles, que la libertad bien entendida constituye el resorte más radical para posibilitar el crecimiento humano. La libertad constituye la dimensión propia de la naturaleza del ser personal, de ahí que la aceptación del propio ser, sea condición de libertad. Esta afirmación lleva consigo que el crecimiento humano es un cre- cimiento en el orden del ser y por tanto requiere una fundamentación estrictamente ontológica que llegue al núcleo de su perfección. Esta libertad configurada desde la realidad del propio ser, no se limita al estrecho horizonte de los intere- ses personales ni se reduce a una mera capacidad de elegir. Se trata de una libertad que encuentra su espacio creativo en el ámbito del bien. El crecimiento humano no es solo un crecimiento en el orden del ser, sino también un crecimiento en armonía interior. La virtud moral integra la dimensión sensible y corporal con la dimensión social de la persona. Esta armonía se manifiesta en la facilidad y el agrado con los que se realiza los actos de virtud. Estos impulsos sensibles que participan de la razón, se convierten en principios del actuar humanos y son señal de la perfección del actuar humano. Esta connaturalidad afectiva con el bien convierte la afectividad en guía del juicio de la razón, acertando con lo verdaderamente bueno de modo espontáneo y seguro. En este contexto, el crecimiento humano adquiere un horizonte insospechado.The aim of this work is to show, through Antonio Millán-Puelles’ metaphysical speculation, that freedom, when well-understood, constitutes the most radical means to make human growth possible. Freedom constitutes the suitable as well as the natural dimension of the nature of people, therefore the condition of freedom itself entails the acceptance of the own being. This statement implies that human growth is a growth in the order of being, and so it requires a strictly ontological foundation that reaches to the core of its perfection. This freedom set from the reality of the self does not confine itself to the narrow horizons of personal interests nor to the sheer capacity of choosing. It is rather a freedom that finds its creative space in the area of the good. Human growth is not only a growth in the order of being, but also a growth in inner harmony. Moral virtue integrates sensitive and bodily dimension with the social dimension of the person. This harmony is expressed in the ease and pleasure with which acts of virtue are accomplished. These sensitive impulses that take part in the reason turn into principles of acting among humans and are a sign of the human being’s perfection in acting. Such affective connaturality towards the good turns affectivity in the guide for the judgement of reason and spontaneously comes across the truly good and safe. Physically Cross-Linked Hydrogel Based on Phenyl-1,3,5-triazine: 2 Soft Scaffold with Aggregation-Induced Emission

A phenyltriazine compound has been used for the first time as a monomer in the construction of a hydrogel. This physically cross-linked soft material showed blue fluorescence when excited under UV-light. Polymer formation and intermolecular H-bonds arising from triazine moieties operate as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) mechanisms. The combination of soft materials and AIE properties expands the applications of these materials. El proyecto GLOSARIO-SEA. Traducción y adapatación del glosario de la Clay Minerals Society (CMS)

El proyecto de realización de un glosario relacionado con las arcillas se planteó como objetivo de la Sociedad Española de Arcillas (SEA) durante su reunión en Madrid en 2016. Para el proyecto se propuso como coordinador al profesor Manuel Pozo, miembro del “Nomenclature Committee” de la CMS en 2014-2017. Por la magnitud del glosario, fue necesaria la creación de un grupo de trabajo constituido, en 2019, por miembros de la SEA, para llevar a cabo la tarea de traducción y adaptación al español del documento original en inglés. El equipo de trabajo estaba formado por los firmantes de este trabajo. La traducción y adaptación se ha realizado de la versión en inglés del glosario de la Clay Minerals Society (2018) dentro del denominado “The Clay Minerals Society Glossary for Clay Science Project”, cuyos objetivos y restricciones son las siguientes: (1) La inclusión de términos sobre la arcilla. Las definiciones se refieren a términos que se utilizan en la ciencia de la arcilla no apartándose de las definiciones de la ciencia básica, como se haría en química y física. 2) Evitar las definiciones provisionales o tentativas, incluyéndose solo los términos bien definidos. (3) No son objetos de debate las definiciones establecidas por los Comités de Nomenclatura de la Asociación Internacional de Mineralogía (IMA), la CMS y la Asociación Internacional para el Estudio de las Arcillas (AIPEA), o cualquier otro organismo internacional. (4) En general, los nombres de programas informáticos y otros nombres similares no forman parte del glosario. Tras seis envíos para la traducción de términos y tres revisiones del manuscrito se ha conseguido finalizar la versión en español del glosario, que se ha enriquecido con la adición de una selección de imágenes de campo y de microscopía óptica y electrónica. Near real-time surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic with incomplete data

When responding to infectious disease outbreaks, rapid and accurate estimation of the epidemic trajectory is critical. However, two common data collection problems affect the reliability of the epidemiological data in real time: missing information on the time of first symptoms, and retrospective revision of historical information, including right censoring. Here, we propose an approach to construct epidemic curves in near real time that addresses these two challenges by 1) imputation of dates of symptom onset for reported cases using a dynamically-estimated "backward" reporting delay conditional distribution, and 2) adjustment for right censoring using the NobBS software package to nowcast cases by date of symptom onset. This process allows us to obtain an approximation of the time-varying reproduction number (Rt) in real time. We apply this approach to characterize the early SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in two Spanish regions between March and April 2020. We evaluate how these real-time estimates compare with more complete epidemiological data that became available later. We explore the impact of the different assumptions on the estimates, and compare our estimates with those obtained from commonly used surveillance approaches. Our framework can help improve accuracy, quantify uncertainty, and evaluate frequently unstated assumptions when recovering the epidemic curves from limited data obtained from public health systems in other locations.PMD was supported by the fellowship Ramón Areces Foundation. Effectiveness of Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavaria Nordic Vaccination in a Population at High Risk of Mpox: A Spanish Cohort Study

Background: With over 7,500 cases notified since April 2022, Spain has experienced the highest incidence of mpox in Europe. From July 12th onwards, the Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavaria Nordic (MVA-BN) smallpox vaccine was offered as pre-exposure prophylaxis for individuals at high-risk of mpox, including those receiving pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (HIV-PrEP). Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of one dose of MVA-BN vaccine as pre-exposure against mpox virus (MPXV) infection in persons on HIV-PrEP. Methods: We conducted a national retrospective cohort study between July 12 and December 12, 2022. Individuals ≥18 years, receiving HIV-PrEP as of July 12 and with no previous MPXV infection or vaccination were eligible. Each day, we matched individuals receiving a first dose of MVA-BN vaccine and unvaccinated controls of the same age group and region. We used a Kaplan-Meier estimator and calculate risk ratios (RR) and vaccine effectiveness (VE = 1-RR). Results: We included 5,660 matched pairs, with a median follow-up of 62 days (interquartile range 24-97). Mpox cumulative incidence was 5.6 per 1,000 (25 cases) in unvaccinated and 3.5 per 1,000 (18 cases) in vaccinated. No effect was found during days 0-6 post-vaccination (VE -38.3; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): -332.7; 46.4), but VE was 65% in ≥7 days (95%CI 22.9; 88.0) and 79% in ≥14 days (95%CI 33.3; 100.0) post-vaccination. Conclusions: One dose of MVA-BN vaccine offered protection against mpox in a most-at-risk population shortly after the vaccination. Further studies need to assess the VE of a second dose and the duration of protection over time.S

A uno de los fármacos obtenidos por este procedimiento la OMS le asignó el nombre de picobenzida. Al tratarse de una benzamida sustituida se prepararon análogos modificando los sustituyentes del anillo aromático y se llevó a cabo un estudio QSAR e la serie, que condujo a la optimización de la misma.
