The Social Model of Translation and Its Application to Internet Search Engines Specialized in Health: The ASEM Search Engine for Neuromuscular Diseases

The use of the Internet as a source of health information is greatly increasing. However, identifying relevant and valid information can be problematic. This paper firstly analyses the efficiency of Internet search engines specialized in health in order to then determine the quality of the online information related to a specific medical subdomain like that of neuromuscular diseases. Our aim is to present a model for the development and use of a bilingual electronic corpus (MYOCOR), related to the said neuromuscular diseases in order to: a) on one hand, provide a quality health information tool for health professionals, patients and relatives, as well as for translators and writers of specialized texts, and software developers, and b) on the other hand, use the same as a base for the implementation of a search engine (using keywords and semantics), like the ASEM (Federación Española Contra las Enfermedades Neuromusculares) search engine for neuromuscular diseases

Guías de práctica clínica en francés y español: análisis de la superestructura

The purpose of this paper is to provide elements that will help to further understand the clinical practice guideline genre in French and in Spanish, thereby facilitating the work of authors and translators. The study thus focuses on the analysis of the superstructure, with a view to offering guidelines for the construction of a sample prototype. First, we describe and define the genre in question. In the second section, we refer to the materials and methodological framework employed, describing the sub-domain chosen for analysis (rare diseases), the compilation and processing of the corpus and, finally, the research methodology implemented. The final section presents and discusses the results of the corpus analysis, which indicate the importance of advocating a single unique superstructure for the genre in question.El objetivo de este trabajo es proporcionar elementos que permitan un mejor conocimiento del género textual “guía de práctica clínica” en francés y en español que facilite su redacción y su traducción. Para ello, nos centramos en el estudio de la superestructura con la finalidad de ofrecer pautas para el establecimiento de un modelo prototípico. En primer lugar, se lleva a cabo una descripción y delimitación del género objeto de estudio. En segundo lugar, se recogen los datos relativos a los materiales y el marco metodológico, describiéndose el subdominio seleccionado (enfermedades raras), la compilación y el tratamiento del corpus, así como la metodología de investigación adoptada. En el apartado final, se presentan los datos obtenidos tras el análisis del corpus y se discuten los resultados, los cuales ponen de manifiesto la importancia de abogar por una estandarización superestructural del género

Traducción de referencias culturales en textos biomédicos sobre enfermedades neuromusculares (francés-español)

Les études concernant la traduction de textes biomédicaux ne mettent pas souvent l’accent sur les aspects culturels. Cependant, dans ces textes on trouve également des références à des éléments spécifiques du contexte socioculturel dans lequel ils ont été créés. Le but de notre étude est d'analyser les stratégies suivies pour la traduction des références culturelles présentes dans un corpus de textes en français sur les maladies neuromusculaires que nous avons traduits à l'espagnol. Les références identifiées sont classées, analysées et les traductions proposées justifiées. Cette étude permettra de fournir des données sur un nouvel aspect concernant les difficultés de traduction de textes biomédicaux

The terms manifestation (fr) and manifestación (es) in biomedical journal articles: a corpus-based research

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar los términos manifestation y “manifestación” empleados en francés y español para hacer referencia a alteraciones derivadas de un problema de salud. El estudio se ha realizado sobre un corpus bilingüe de artículos publicados en revistas biomédicas, un macrogénero vinculado a la investigación y caracterizado por su alto nivel de especialización. Se han utilizado las funcionalidades del portal RERCOR (Recursos sobre enfermedades raras) para identificar las coocurrencias y los patrones sintácticos de los términos analizados, así como para determinar las frecuencias de uso. Las numerosas enfermedades raras y las especialidades implicadas confieren un gran interés terminológico a este subdominio. Los resultados aportan datos al estudio de la terminología aplicada al concepto de enfermedad en francés y español, son de utilidad para traducir y pueden servir para implementar programas de extracción semiautomática de terminología.The aim of this study is to analyse the terms manifestation and manifestación used both in French and Spanish to refer to alterations caused by a health issue. The research was based on a bilingual corpus of articles published in biomedical journals, a macro-genre linked to research and characterised by its high level of specialisation. Certain functionalities of the portal RERCOR (Resources about Rare Diseases) have been used to identify co-occurrences and syntactic patterns of the analysed terms, as well as to determine frequencies of usage. The many rare diseases and the implied specialities confer a great terminological interest to this sub-domain. The results provide data to the study of the terminology applied to the concept of disease in French and Spanish, they are useful in translation and they may be of use to implement semi-automatic terminology extraction software.Inscrito parcialmente en los proyectos ED431C2018/50 (Xunta de Galicia) y TIN2017-85160-C2-2-R (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, España)

Traducción de textos biomédicos: creación de recursos a partir de un corpus sobre enfermedades neuromusculares pediátricas (francés-español)

This paper deals with the creation of terminology resources to assist in the translation of biomedical texts. First of all, we describe the criteria used to design and compile the ENEUPECOR corpus, a French-Spanish bilingual specialised corpus constituted by scientific papers on neuromuscular diseases in paediatrics. Afterwards, we describe the methodology and steps involved in corpus exploitation in order to create a French-Spanish bilingual glossary including the main concepts of the sub-domain selected.This study is part of our current research on text translation within the field of rare diseases, domain to which belong neuromuscular diseases in paediatrics. Both the thematic sub-domain selected as well as the choice of languages constitute a novel line of research. Furthermore, the fact that rare diseases are now beginning to be seen as a priority in European Public Health Policies confers more relevance to our work from a social point of view. Thus, academic-scientific interests and social interests go hand-in-hand
