Measuring the relation between academic performance and emotional intelligence at the university level after the COVID-19 Pandemic using TMMS-24

The outbreak of the global pandemic derived from COVID-19 in early 2020 has represented a huge loss of social contact for most young people. The extent of these effects is still unknown, so it is necessary to ask what the effect of this new, unforeseen, and prolonged situation on the management of emotional intelligence in university students is. This study aims to compare the academic performance, test anxiety (before and during the online exams), and emotional intelligence of 91 students in a university Master’s degree program after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The emotional intelligence was measured by the TMMS-24, the academic performance was compiled in common subjects, and test anxiety was measured by self-assessment just after finishing each online exam. The comparisons between the variables were made through means difference contrasts using Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis, and One-way ANOVA and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient as a non-parametric test for correlational analysis. The results show that the COVID-19 pandemic has not modified how these three variables are related, so it can be concluded that the prolonged social isolation suffered by young people has not had negative repercussions on their emotional intelligence, anxiety before exams, and academic performanc

[EN] The abundance of two-component systems (TCSs) in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) genome indicates their importance in the physiology of this soil bacteria. Currently, several TCSs have been related to antibiotic regulation, and the purpose in this study was the characterization of five TCSs, selected by sequence homology with the well-known absA1A2 system, that could also be associated with this important process. Null mutants of the five TCSs were obtained and two mutants (ΔSCO1744/1745 and ΔSCO4596/4597/4598) showed significant differences in both antibiotic production and morphological differentiation, and have been renamed as abr (antibiotic regulator). No detectable changes in antibiotic production were found in the mutants in the systems that include the ORFs SCO3638/3639, SCO3640/3641 and SCO2165/2166 in any of the culture conditions assayed. The system SCO1744/1745 (AbrA1/A2) was involved in negative regulation of antibiotic production, and acted also as a negative regulator of the morphological differentiation. By contrast, the system SCO4596/4597/4598 (AbrC1/C2/C3), composed of two histidine kinases and one response regulator, had positive effects on both morphological development and antibiotic production. Microarray analyses of the ΔabrC1/C2/C3 and wild-type transcriptomes revealed downregulation of actII-ORF4 and cdaR genes, the actinorhodin and calcium-dependent antibiotic pathway-specific regulators respectively. These results demonstrated the involvement of these new two-component systems in antibiotic production and morphological differentiation by different approaches. One is a pleiotropic negative regulator: abrA1/A2. The other one is a positive regulator composed of three elements, two histidine kinases and one response regulator: abrC1/C2/C3SIThis work has been supported by grants GEN2003-20245-C09-02 from the Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología (CICYT) to R. Conocimiento y utilización de estrategias en la adquisición de aprendizajes en el alumnado de Grado

    Get PDF

Early school-leaving is influenced by many factors, among which the communicative competence is included. In Melilla, where the rate of school failure is one of the highest in Spain, a research work was carried out to define the personal and language profile of young people who leave school before being 24. A mixed methodology was used to link the results of a survey with the information received from a discussion group. Data and results are arranged in three categories: personal and educational characteristics, family background and language skills. In conclusion, this profile corresponds to a young Berber person, with no defined gender, aged 16 and 17, who uses Spanish and Tamazight in daily life, and a poor academic performance; in addition, the family level of studies and socioeconomic status are low. Regarding the language skills, the reading habit is very limited and has difficulties in oral comprehension

The last deglaciation in the Picos de Europa National Park (Cantabrian Mountains, northern Spain)

42 páginas, 8 figuras, 4 tablas.-- El PDF del artículo esta en formato pre-print.A sedimentological and geochemical study of the Lago Enol sequence (Cantabrian Mountains, northern Spain), together with detailed geomorphological mapping, provides a first record of glacier evolution and climate change over the last 40 ka in the Picos de Europa National Park. The Enol glacier retreated from its maximum extent prior to 40 ka BP as demonstrated by the onset of proglacial lacustrine sedimentation in two glaciated depressions: the Comella hollow to the north (before 40 ka BP) and the Lago Enol (before 38 ka BP). These results support previous evidence that the maximum extent of southern European glaciers occurred earlier than in northern Europe. Alternation of homogeneous and laminated proglacial sediments during the glacier retreat illustrate a dynamic glacial evolution during the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 (40–26 ka BP). A slight warming is detected at 26 ka ago with the change from proglacial sediments (in a lake located in contact to the glacier) to glaciolacustrine sedimentation (in a non-contact or distal lake). Finally, the onset of organic-rich sediments took place at 18 ka ago. This last transition occurred in two phases, similarly to the North Atlantic Last Termination, suggesting a link between North Atlantic Deep Water formation oscillations and palaeohydrological variability in the Cantabrian Mountains. This research has been funded through the projects LIMNOCLIBER (REN2003-09130-C02-02), IBERLIMNO (CGL2005-20236-E/CLI), LIMNOCAL (CGL2006-13327-C04-01) and GRACCIE (CSD2007-00067), provided by the Spanish Inter-Ministry Commission of Science and Technology (CICYT). Towards industrially-feasible delignification and pitch removal by treating paper pulp with Myceliophthora thermophila laccase and a phenolic mediator

    Get PDF
The ability of two natural phenols to act as mediators of the recombinant Myceliophthora thermophila laccase (MtL) in eucalypt-pulp delignification was investigated. After alkaline peroxide extraction, the properties of the enzymatically-treated pulps improved with respect to the control. The pulp brightness increased (3.1 points) after the enzymatic treatment with MtL alone, but the highest improvements were obtained after the MtL treatment using syringaldehyde (4.7 points) and especially methyl syringate (8.3 points) as mediators. Likewise, a decrease in kappa number up to 2.7 points was obtained after the MtL–methyl syringate treatment, followed by decreases of 1.4 and 0.9 points after the treatments with MtL–syringaldehyde and MtL alone, respectively. On the other hand, removal of the main lipophilic extractives present in eucalypt pulp was observed after the above laccase–mediator treatments. Finally, the doses of both MtL and methyl syringate were reduced, and results compatible with industrial implementation were obtained. This study was funded by the BIORENEW and LIGNODECO EU projects (NMP2-CT-2006-026456 and KBBE-2009-3-244362, respectively) and the ELLE and RAPERO Spanish MICINN (co-financed by FEDER funds) projects AGL2008-00709 and BIO2008-01533, respectively).Peer reviewe

Mesenchymal stromal cells combined with elastin-like recombinamers increase angiogenesis in vivo after hindlimb ischemia

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaHindlimb ischemia is an unmet medical need, especially for those patients unable to undergo vascular surgery. Cellular therapy, mainly through mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) administration, may be a potentially attractive approach in this setting. In the current work, we aimed to assess the potential of the combination of MSCs with a proangiogenic elastin-like recombinamer (ELR)–based hydrogel in a hindlimb ischemia murine model. Human bone marrow MSCs were isolated from four healthy donors, while ELR biomaterials were genetically engineered. Hindlimb ischemia was induced through ligation of the right femoral artery, and mice were intramuscularly injected with ELR biomaterial, 0.5 × 106 MSCs or the combination, and also compared to untreated animals. Tissue perfusion was monitored using laser Doppler perfusion imaging. Histological analysis of hindlimbs was performed after hematoxylin and eosin staining. Immunofluorescence with anti–human mitochondria antibody was used for human MSC detection, and the biomaterial was detected by elastin staining. To analyze the capillary density, immunostaining with an anti–CD31 antibody was performed. Our results show that the injection of MSCs significantly improves tissue reperfusion from day 7 (p = 0.0044) to day 21 (p = 0.0216), similar to the infusion of MSC + ELR (p = 0.0038, p = 0.0014), without significant differences between both groups. After histological evaluation, ELR hydrogels induced minimal inflammation in the injection sites, showing biocompatibility. MSCs persisted with the biomaterial after 21 days, both in vitro and in vivo. Finally, we observed a higher blood vessel density when mice were treated with MSCs compared to control (p<0.0001), but this effect was maximized and significantly different to the remaining experimental conditions when mice were treated with the combination of MSCs and the ELR biomaterial (p < 0.0001). In summary, the combination of an ELR-based hydrogel with MSCs may improve the angiogenic effects of both strategies on revascularization of ischemic tissues.Spanish Government (RTI2018-096320-B-C22, FPU16-04015, PID2019-110709RB-I00, PID2020-118669RA-I00)Interreg V España Portugal POCTEP (0624_2IQBIONEURO_6_E), Centro en Red de Medicina Regenerativa y Terapia Celular de Castilla y LeónConsejería de Educación de Castilla y León (CAS079P17)Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) (PI19/01630)Programs of ISCIII- European Regional Development Fund (RD16/0011/0015, RD21/ 0017/0006

Plasma Assisted Oblique Angle Deposition of Transparent and Conductive in- Plane Anisotropic ITO Thin Films

Oblique angle deposition (OAD) is a powerful technique for the fabrication of porous nanostructured oxide thin films. OAD films typically present a columnar tilted nanostructure due to geometrical shadowing effects during the thin film growth. In this work, we study the fabrication of transparent and conducting indium tin oxide films (ITO) by OAD assisted by a microwave ECR plasma. The objective of assisting the deposition with a plasma discharge is to modify the growth mechanism of the OAD process introducing additional parameters to control the columnar microstructure, composition, porosity of the films. The results indicate the OAD ITO deposition assisted by the plasma discharge is a very effective process to develop in-plane structural anisotropy in the ITO nanocolumnar films what determines their electrical properties.España MINECO-AEI MAT2016-79866-R, MAT2013-40852-R, MAT2013-42900-PEspaña MINECO-CSIC 201560E055, IJCI-2014-21226
