Deconstructing Weight Management Interventions for Young Adults: Looking Inside the Black Box of the EARLY Consortium Trials.

ObjectiveThe goal of the present study was to deconstruct the 17 treatment arms used in the Early Adult Reduction of weight through LifestYle (EARLY) weight management trials.MethodsIntervention materials were coded to reflect behavioral domains and behavior change techniques (BCTs) within those domains planned for each treatment arm. The analytical hierarchy process was employed to determine an emphasis profile of domains in each intervention.ResultsThe intervention arms used BCTs from all of the 16 domains, with an average of 29.3 BCTs per intervention arm. All 12 of the interventions included BCTs from the six domains of Goals and Planning, Feedback and Monitoring, Social Support, Shaping Knowledge, Natural Consequences, and Comparison of Outcomes; 11 of the 12 interventions shared 15 BCTs in common across those six domains.ConclusionsWeight management interventions are complex. The shared set of BCTs used in the EARLY trials may represent a core intervention that could be studied to determine the required emphases of BCTs and whether additional BCTs add to or detract from efficacy. Deconstructing interventions will aid in reproducibility and understanding of active ingredients

In this article, the authors argue that the case study approach and, specifically, case study competitions constitute an ideal pedagogical strategy for achieving this objective in an effective and efficient manner, with resulting benefits for both students and employers

ACC/AHA/ACP-ASIM guidelines for the management of patients with chronic stable angina: A Report of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on Practice Guidelines (Committee on Management of Patients With Chronic Stable Angina)

The ACC/AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines was formed to make recommendations regarding the diagnosis and treatment of patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. Ischemic heart disease is the single leading cause of death in the U.S. The most common manifestation of this disease is chronic stable angina. Recognizing the importance of the management of this common entity and the absence of national clinical practice guidelines in this area, the task force formed the current committee to develop guidelines for the management of patients with stable angina. Because this problem is frequently encountered in the practice of internal medicine, the task force invited the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) to serve as a partner in this effort by naming four general internists to serve on the committee

Evaluation of the National Park Service’s Progress Towards the Climate Change Action Plan

This project, facilitated by Dr. Bianchi of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, evaluated the progress the National Parks Service (NPS) has made towards reducing the impacts of climate change based on the objectives of the Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP). In addition, it identified areas of improvement and made suggestions for additional actions. This was achieved by examining the eight action areas of the CCAP and identifying examples that support each goal. This report identified areas where the NPS has been successful, and it made recommendations for improvement where insufficient actions were found
