    With the arrival of new hardware and software technologies, supervisory control and data acquisition human-machine interfaces (SCADA/HMI), usually text-based, can now benefit from the advantages the inclusion of multimedia information brings. However, due to the special requirements imposed by such systems, integrating audio and video data into the SCADA interfaces is not a trivial task.     Efficient nickel and copper-based catalysts supported on modified graphite materials for the hydrogen production from formic acid decomposition

    Ni, Cu and Ni-Cu catalysts supported on high surface area graphite were synthesized by incipient wet impregnation. Also, the effect of doping the graphite support with alkali oxides (Li, Na and K) was studied. The catalysts were tested in the formic acid decomposition reaction to produce hydrogen. The bimetallic Ni-Cu catalyst doped with K showed the best catalytic performance with 100% conversion of formic acid at 130 °C and a 95% of selectivity to hydrogen. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the catalysts follows the order: Ni-Cu/K > NiCu/Na > Ni-Cu > Ni-Cu/Li. While the order for the apparent activation energy values is: Ni-Cu > Ni-Cu/Li > Ni-Cu/Na > Ni-Cu/K. The mechanism of the reaction is approached by programmed temperature surface reaction (TPSR) experiments and attenuated total reflectance (ATR). The greater catalytic activity of the Ni-Cu catalyst doped with potassium is ascribed to the lower stability of the formate, bicarbonate and carbonate species on its surface.Fil: Faroldi, Betina María Cecilia.     Transgenerational inheritance of environmental information in Caenorhabditis elegans

    Motivation: In 1906 Luther Burbank, an American botanist, said “Heridity is only the sum of all past environment” (Burbank, 1906). This idea has always been present in spite of being left behind after sustaining that the germline was isolated of the rest of the organism and, therefore, of the environment. With the rediscovery of epigenetics as a regulatory system which controls gene expression without affecting the composition of genes themselves, this idea has regained importance. Not only a great number of cases of environmental changes that influenced the epigenetics in a great variety of species began to be observed; but also the effects of these changes could last for three or more generations. This phenomenon was known as transgenerational epigenetic inheritance (Heard and Martienssen, 2014). This project aims to study the phenomenon of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance in the Caenorhabditis elegans model animal. The idea is to set the parameters where we can identify the phenomenon and reveal the molecular mechanism involved in the process.Methods: We set two different experiments, resistance to pathogen and behavioral respond to the pathogen. For the resistance experiment, plates with Escherichia coli (OP50, main source of nematode's food) and plates with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA14, a pathogen) were used to grow mothers and then the percentage of descendants that reach adulthood were scored. For the behavioral experiment, plates with OP50 and plates with both bacteria (PA14 and OP50) were used to grow mothers. Then their eggs were placed on plates containing OP50 and PA14. We counted the percent of worms that went to OP50 and to PA14.Results: It has been observed that individuals whose mothers have been exposed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa are more resistant to it than those whose mothers have never been in contact with the pathogen. On the other hand, it has been observed that this inheritance not only affects the defense mechanisms of the organism, but also influences its behavior. At this time we are studying the genetic pathways involved in this process by using mutants affected in epigenetic and in other candidate pathways.Conclusions: Our results suggest that there is not only an inheritance to stress resistance but also an acquired behavioral inheritance.     The concept of a biorefinery that integrates processes and technologies for biomass conversion demands efficient utilization of all components. Hydrothermal processing is a potential clean technology to convert raw materials such as lignocellulosic materials and aquatic biomass into bioenergy and high added-value chemicals. In this technology, water at high temperatures and pressures is applied for hydrolysis, extraction and structural modification of materials. This review is focused on providing an updated overview on the fundamentals, modelling, separation and applications of the main components of lignocellulosic materials and conversion of aquatic biomass (macro- and micro- algae) into value-added products.The authors Hector A.     Endoglin Protein Interactome Profiling Identifies TRIM21 and Galectin-3 as New Binding Partners

    This article belongs to the Special Issue TGF-beta/BMP Signaling PathwayEndoglin is a 180-kDa glycoprotein receptor primarily expressed by the vascular endothelium and involved in cardiovascular disease and cancer. Heterozygous mutations in the endoglin gene (ENG) cause hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia type 1, a vascular disease that presents with nasal and gastrointestinal bleeding, skin and mucosa telangiectases, and arteriovenous malformations in internal organs. A circulating form of endoglin (alias soluble endoglin, sEng), proteolytically released from the membrane-bound protein, has been observed in several inflammation-related pathological conditions and appears to contribute to endothelial dysfunction and cancer development through unknown mechanisms. Membrane-bound endoglin is an auxiliary component of the TGF-ß receptor complex and the extracellular region of endoglin has been shown to interact with types I and II TGF-ß receptors, as well as with BMP9 and BMP10 ligands, both members of the TGF-ß family. To search for novel protein interactors, we screened a microarray containing over 9000 unique human proteins using recombinant sEng as bait. We find that sEng binds with high affinity, at least, to 22 new proteins. Among these, we validated the interaction of endoglin with galectin-3, a secreted member of the lectin family with capacity to bind membrane glycoproteins, and with tripartite motif-containing protein 21 (TRIM21), an E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase. Using human endothelial cells and Chinese hamster ovary cells, we showed that endoglin co-immunoprecipitates and co-localizes with galectin-3 or TRIM21.     Removal of paracetamol on biomass-derived activated carbon: Modeling the fixed bed breakthrough curves using batch adsorption experiments

    The remediation of paracetamol (PA), an emerging contaminant frequently found in wastewater treatment plants, has been studied in the low concentration range (0.3–10 mg L−1) using as adsorbent a biomass-derived activated carbon. PA uptake of up to 100 mg g−1 over the activated carbon has been obtained, with the adsorption isotherms being fairly explained by the Langmuir model. The application of Reichemberg and the Vermeulen equations to the batch kinetics experiments allowed estimating homogeneous and heterogeneous diffusion coefficients, reflecting the dependence of diffusion with the surface coverage of PA. A series of rapid small-scale column tests were carried out to determine the breakthrough curves under different operational conditions (temperature, PA concentration, flow rate, bed length). The suitability of the proposed adsorbent for the remediation of PA in fixed-bed adsorption was proven by the high PA adsorption capacity along with the fast adsorption and the reduced height of the mass transfer zone of the columns. We have demonstrated that, thanks to the use of the heterogeneous diffusion coefficient, the proposed mathematical approach for the numerical solution to the mass balance of the column provides a reliable description of the breakthrough profiles and the design parameters, being much more accurate than models based in the classical linear driving force.We gratefully thank Junta de Andalucía (P09-FQM-5156) and Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO – Spain) (Project CTQ2012-36408) and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER – Spain) for financial support

    Effect of Yb concentration on the resistivity and lifetime of CdTe:Ge:Yb codoped crystals

    The resistivity and electron lifetime of CdTe:Ge:Yb crystals are reported, demonstrating that the effect of Yb concentration is crucial for accurate electrical compensation. It is also demonstrated that the codoping of CdTe with Ge as deep donor and with Yb as rare-earth element could be a promising way to obtain semiinsulating CdTe crystals with good transport properties.     Reclassifying Hepatic Cell Death during Liver Damage:Ferroptosis-A Novel Form of Non-Apoptotic Cell Death?

    Ferroptosis has emerged as a new type of cell death in different pathological conditions, including neurological and kidney diseases and, especially, in different types of cancer. The hallmark of this regulated cell death is the presence of iron-driven lipid peroxidation; the activation of key genes related to this process such as glutathione peroxidase-4 (gpx4), acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member-4 (acsl4), carbonyl reductase [NADPH] 3 (cbr3), and prostaglandin peroxidase synthase-2 (ptgs2); and morphological changes including shrunken and electron-dense mitochondria. Iron overload in the liver has long been recognized as both a major trigger of liver damage in different diseases, and it is also associated with liver fibrosis. New evidence suggests that ferroptosis might be a novel type of non-apoptotic cell death in several liver diseases including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), drug-induced liver injury (DILI), viral hepatitis, and hemochromatosis. The interaction between iron-related lipid peroxidation, cellular stress signals, and antioxidant systems plays a pivotal role in the development of this novel type of cell death. In addition, integrated responses from lipidic mediators together with free iron from iron-containing enzymes are essential to understanding this process. The presence of ferroptosis and the exact mechanisms leading to this non-apoptotic type of cell death in the liver remain scarcely elucidated. Recognizing ferroptosis as a novel type of cell death in the liver could lead to the understanding of the complex interaction between different types of cell death, their role in progression of liver fibrosis, the development of new biomarkers, as well as the use of modulators of ferroptosis, allowing improved theranostic approaches in the clinic
