The focus of this study is to investigate how motivation, language learning strategies, and transfer of first language (L1) knowledge of grammar influence the learner’s second language proficiency level. The study was done in a Thames Valley University undergraduate Spanish beginners course (n = 96). The central question on which the research is based can be given as: “What student characteristics have the potential to influence the ultimate level of Spanish language achievement in particular in integrated classes of full time undergraduate (FTU) students and part time associated (PTA) students? This exploratory ex post facto study in social science is approached in a linguistic and educational ontology. The analysis of variance ANOVA was carried out to find the differences in the mean scores between the dependent variables across groups and gender. In addition, a Pearson product moment correlation was employed to find the relationship between L1 knowledge of grammar and an achievement test. A multiple regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the total scores in Spanish and the dependent variable, using a Part correlation to see the shared variance of these variables. The results show that there are only statistically significant differences in the mean scores between the full time undergraduate group and the part time associated group in relation to motivation, language learning strategies (LLS) and L1 knowledge of grammar. On the contrary, no significant differences were found between interaction with gender and groups. The results show high correlation among the dependent variable and the tests. However, there is no statistical significance among the tests for the FTU or the PTA groups. The results show statistical significant correlation among the total scores in Spanish and the L1 knowledge of grammar, Cognitive-LLS (C-LLS), and integrative motivation for the FTU; and L1 knowledge of grammar and C-LLS for the PTA It was concluded that the PTA group achieve a higher proficiency level than the FTU group after the same period of time learning Spanish. In addition, L1 knowledge of grammar has a strong influence on L2 proficiency level. Integrative motivation and metacognitive LLS (M-LLS) enhances second language (L2) proficiency level

This representation determines the hyponymic, metaphorical and metonymical definitions as well as those of nominal adjacents. In their turn, the Law and Penal Codes delimit the intension and the extension of the defined thing and presuppose a juridical knowledge by the addressee that does not exist in Alfonso X´s encyclopaedi

Everyday, e-commerce sites are updating with thousands of images and their associated metadata (textual information), deepening the problem, akin to finding a needle in a haystack. In this paper, we leverage both the images and textual meta-data and propose a joint multi-modal embedding that maps both the text and images into a common latent space. Distances in the latent space correspond to similarity between products, allowing us to effectively perform retrieval in this latent space, which is both efficient and accurate. We train this embedding using large-scale real world e-commerce data by both minimizing the similarity between related products and using auxiliary classification networks to that encourage the embedding to have semantic meaning. We compare against existing approaches and show significant improvements in retrieval tasks on a large-scale e-commerce dataset. We also provide an analysis of the different metadata.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Environmental fiscal reform is undergoing an intense restructuring process, progressively acquiring greater significance. In the European context, more than three quarters of environmental taxes are made up by tax on energy, the use of which is indiscriminately on the increase in developed economies. With the objective studying the degree of harmonization within energy taxation, this paper analyses different methods in the analysis of convergence, first it performed an analysis of conditional convergence beta is used, then the techniques and apply beta sigma absolute convergence for each of the groups defined terms countries. As results revealed the existence of two groups of countries in terms of energy intensive, which independently have a clear process of convergence in energy fiscal pressure

The following article intend to analize the situation in Spain of not married couples, specially homosexual couples, who wish to be adoptives parents. We would like to insist on some specific circunstances which the actual law doesn ́t cover. It happens to be seriously incongruous with others areas of protection of under age children as for instance, fostering them. We insist on the circunstances which the imposibility of the adoption of the homosexual couples may vulnere the children right

A Hemispherical Contact Model for Simplifying 3D Occlusal Surfaces

Statement of problem Currently, dental articulators can recreate mandibular movements and occlusal contacts. However, whether virtual articulators can also provide information about occluding dental surfaces, functional movements, and the mandibular condyles is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the occluding surfaces on dental casts obtained from a patient and approximate them to a hemispherical contact model. Both models were tested by digitizing the Dentatus ARL dental articulator. Material and methods A combination of photogrammetry and structure from motion methods were used to scan a Dentatus ARL articulator and representative dental casts. Using computer-aided engineering and finite element analysis, contact points and action vectors to the forces on occluding surfaces and condyles were obtained for cast and hemispherical models. This experiment was performed using centric occlusion and 3 different condylar inclinations. The Kruskal-Wallis 1-way analysis of variance on ranks test was used to allow all pairwise comparisons between condylar inclination and mechanical action vector values in each location (α=.05). Results Action vectors from the cast model and each location of the hemispherical model were calculated to show the mechanical consequences and the similarity among models. Overall, no significant differences were observed for action vectors (A20 versus A40 versus A60) at each location (dental cast/hemisphere, right condylar, and left condylar) in the analysis of dental casts and the hemisphere model (.382≤P≤.999). Conclusions This study provided graphical information that may assist the dental professional in determining which occlusal contacts should be modified to attain condylar and balanced centric occlusion

HINODE Observations of Chromospheric Brightenings in the Ca II H Line during small-scale Flux Emergence Events

\ion{Ca}{2} H emission is a well-known indicator of magnetic activity in the Sun and other stars. It is also viewed as an important signature of chromospheric heating. However, the \ion{Ca}{2} H line has not been used as a diagnostic of magnetic flux emergence from the solar interior. Here we report on Hinode observations of chromospheric \ion{Ca}{2} H brightenings associated with a repeated, small-scale flux emergence event. We describe this process and investigate the evolution of the magnetic flux, G-band brightness, and \ion{Ca}{2} H intensity in the emerging region. Our results suggest that energy is released in the chromosphere as a consequence of interactions between the emerging flux and the pre-existing magnetic field, in agreement with recent 3D numerical simulations.Comment: 12 Pages, 6 Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
