    Scanamorphos: a map-making software for Herschel and similar scanning bolometer arrays

    Scanamorphos is one of the public softwares available to post-process scan observations performed with the Herschel photometer arrays. This post-processing mainly consists in subtracting the total low-frequency noise (both its thermal and non-thermal components), masking high-frequency artefacts such as cosmic ray hits, and projecting the data onto a map. Although it was developed for Herschel, it is also applicable with minimal adjustment to scan observations made with some other imaging arrays subjected to low-frequency noise, provided they entail sufficient redundancy; it was successfully applied to P-Artemis, an instrument operating on the APEX telescope. Contrary to matrix-inversion softwares and high-pass filters, Scanamorphos does not assume any particular noise model, and does not apply any Fourier-space filtering to the data, but is an empirical tool using purely the redundancy built in the observations -- taking advantage of the fact that each portion of the sky is sampled at multiple times by multiple bolometers. It is an interactive software in the sense that the user is allowed to optionally visualize and control results at each intermediate step, but the processing is fully automated.     Acid/base-triggered switching of circularly polarized luminescence and electronic circular dichroism in organic and organometallic helicenes.

    Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence acid/base switching activity has been demonstrated in helicene-bipyridine proligand 1 a and in its “rollover” cycloplatinated derivative 2 a. Whereas proligand 1 a displays a strong bathochromic shift (>160 nm) of the nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence upon protonation, complex 2 a displays slightly stronger emission. This strikingly different behavior between singlet emission in the organic helicene and triplet emission in the organometallic derivative has been rationalized by using quantum-chemical calculations. The very large bathochromic shift of the emission observed upon protonation of azahelicene-bipyridine 1 a has been attributed to the decrease in aromaticity (promoting a charge-transfer-type transition rather than a π–π* transition) as well as an increase in the HOMO–LUMO character of the transition and stabilization of the LUMO level upon protonation

    Cold Dust but Warm Gas in the Unusual Elliptical Galaxy NGC 4125

    Data from the Herschel Space Observatory have revealed an unusual elliptical galaxy, NGC 4125, which has strong and extended submillimeter emission from cold dust but only very strict upper limits to its CO and Hi emission. Depending on the dust emissivity, the total dust mass is 2-5 x 10(6) M-circle dot. While the neutral gas-to-dust mass ratio is extremely low (= 10(4) K faster than the dust is evaporated.     Mid--IR emission of galaxies in the Virgo cluster: II. Integrated properties

    We analyse the integrated properties of the Mid-IR emission of a complete, optically selected sample of galaxies in the Virgo cluster observed with the ISOCAM instrument on board the ISO satellite. The analysis shows that the Mid-IR emission up to 15 mic of optically-selected, normal early-type galaxies (E, S0 and S0a) is dominated by the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the cold stellar component. The Mid-IR emission of late-type galaxies is instead dominated by the thermal emission from dust. The small dust grains emitting in the Mid-IR have an excess of emission if compared to big grains emitting in the Far-IR. While the Far-IR emission increases with the intensity of the interstellar radiation field, their Mid-IR emission is non--linearly related to the UV radiation field. The spectral energy distributions of the target galaxies indicate that there is a linear relationship between the UV radiation field and the Mid-IR emission of galaxies for low or intermediate activities of star formation, while the emission from the hot dust seems to drop for strong UV fields. The Mid-IR colour of late-type galaxies is not related to their activity of star formation. The properties of the dust emission in the Mid-IR seem more related to the mass than to the morphological type of the target galaxy. Since the activity of star formation is anticorrelated to the mass of galaxies, this reflects a relationship between the emission of dust in the Mid-IR and the UV radiation field: galaxies with the lowest Mid-IR emission for a given UV field are low mass, dwarf galaxies.     The physical characteristics of the gas in the disk of Centaurus A using the Herschel Space Observatory

    We search for variations in the disk of Centaurus A of the emission from atomic fine structure lines using Herschel PACS and SPIRE spectroscopy. In particular we observe the [C II](158 μ\mum), [N II](122 and 205 μ\mum), [O I](63 and 145 μ\mum) and [O III](88 μ\mum) lines, which all play an important role in cooling the gas in photo-ionized and photodissociation regions. We determine that the ([C II]+[O I]63_{63})/FTIRF_{TIR} line ratio, a proxy for the heating efficiency of the gas, shows no significant radial trend across the observed region, in contrast to observations of other nearby galaxies. We determine that 10 - 20% of the observed [C II] emission originates in ionized gas. Comparison between our observations and a PDR model shows that the strength of the far-ultraviolet radiation field, G0G_0, varies between 101.7510^{1.75} and 102.7510^{2.75} and the hydrogen nucleus density varies between 102.7510^{2.75} and 103.7510^{3.75} cm3^{-3}, with no significant radial trend in either property. In the context of the emission line properties of the grand-design spiral galaxy M51 and the elliptical galaxy NGC 4125, the gas in Cen A appears more characteristic of that in typical disk galaxies rather than elliptical galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 22 pages, 10 figures, 5 table

    Activité nycthémérale et utilisation de la séquence radier-profond par les truitelles d'un an (Salmo trutta L.)

    Le comportement d'un groupe de dix truitelles d'un an (Salmo trutta L.) a été étudié au cours de deux cycles d'observation de 3 jours dans une séquence radier-profond reconstituée en milieu semi-naturel. Des changements de préférences d'habitat ont été mis en évidence à l'échelle du nycthémère et correspondent à des changements d'activité (repos, nage et alimentation). Lorsqu'elles sont en nage statique et en alimentation sur la dérive, les truitelles défendent leur poste et occupent le radier et le profond en pleine eau. Au repos, elles sont posées sur le fond du contre-courant et du profond, et elles n'exhibent pas de comportement agonistique. De plus, les truitelles ont montré un rythme d'activité diurne prononcé
