Implementing an LGBTQ Training for Teen Pregnancy Prevention Facilitators

    Get PDF
Teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections remain a major health concern and are linked to a number of poor outcomes. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth are particularly at risk for these issues. Although evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention (TPP) programs exist, they are not necessarily tailored to meet the needs of LGBTQ youth. This paper reports on the development and implementation of a LGBTQ training for TPP facilitators working for the Augusta Partnership for Children in Augusta, GA. The four-hour workshop covered a range of topics including terminology, identity, intersectionality, and risk/resilience factors through a combination of lecture, video clips, and interactive activities. The training was well-received with most facilitators rating the training as excellent on satisfaction surveys completed one-week after the training. Qualitative comments were also largely positive; areas for improvement included discussion of the legal context around LGBTQ issues and the impact of race on LGBTQ issues. Future work is needed to expand on these findings by examining the impact of such trainings on TPP program implementation and, ultimately, on LGBTQ youth

The mass-metallicity-kinematics relation of the stellar components of EAGLE galaxies

In this work, we study the stellar mass -- stellar metallicity relation as a function of the morpho-kinematics of galaxies in {\sc{eagle}} cosmological simulations. According to our findings, at a given stellar mass (MM_\star), stellar metallicity shows a secondary dependence on the morpho-kinematics of galaxies, which is more evident towards high masses. At the high-mass end (M1010 MM_\star \gtrsim 10^{10}~\rm{M}_\odot), dispersion-supported systems show lower metallicities, on average. In addition, low-mass galaxies with higher rotational support are somewhat more metal-poor. More massive galaxies tend to exhibit flatter morphologies, being prolate systems less metal-enriched, on average. As the redshift zz increases, those aforementioned dependences of metallicity on kinematics and morphology tend to become stronger at high masses. These trends are consistent with the dependences of the stellar mass -- gas-phase metallicity relation on gas fraction, star formation rate and stellar age, and the relation of the latter quantities with galaxy morpho-kinematics.Fil: Zenocratti, Lucas Jesús. Study of Electrochemical and Biological Characteristics of As-Cast Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta System Based on Its Microstructure

[EN] The quaternary Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta (TNZT) alloy was successfully cast-fabricated with the objective to be used in the medical field. Samples' microstructure was compared to CP-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V (control samples) and related to corrosion, ion release and biological properties. As-cast TNZT was formed with large grain sizes (285 m) compared to the ultrafine grain sizes of CP-Ti (11 m) and the + ultrafine grain sizes of 1.45 m and 0.74 m. Hardness and flexural elastic moduli (94 HV and 43 GPa) came close to the biological structures, such as dentin and enamel values. The ion release mechanism of as-cast TNZT was significantly lesser than CP-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V, which can be related to the difference in samples¿ grain sizes and chemical compositions. However, the corrosion rate was higher than for the control samples; this way offers corrosion properties inferior with respect to the properties obtained in the reference materials. Biological assays demonstrated that the two-cell (hDPSCs and MG-63) lineage studied presented good adhesion and capability to differentiate in bone cells on the as-cast TNZT surface, and no cytotoxicity effects were found. Details and reasons based on samples¿ microstructure are discussed. The authors thank the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad for Research Project RTI2018-097810-B-I00 and the European Commission for FEDER funds.Correa Rossi, M.; Navarro, B.; Milian Medina, L.; Vicente-Escuder, Á.; Amigó, V. Guidelines for the monitoring of Rosalia alpina

    Get PDF
Rosalia alpina (Linnaeus, 1758) is a large longhorn beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) which is protected by the Habitats Directive and which typically inhabits beech forests characterised by the presence of mature, dead (or moribund) and sun-exposed trees. A revision of the current knowledge on systematics, ecology and conservation of R. alpina is reported. The research was carried out as part of the LIFE MIPP project which aims to find a standard monitoring method for saproxylic beetles protected in Europe. For monitoring this species, different methods were tested and compared in two areas of the Apennines, utilising wild trees, logs and tripods (artificially built with beech woods), all potentially suitable for the reproduction of the species. Even if all methods succeeded in the survey of the target species, these results showed that the use of wild trees outperformed other methods. Indeed, the use of wild trees allowed more adults to be observed and required less intensive labour. However, monitoring the rosalia longicorn on wild trees has the main disadvantage that they can hardly be considered “standard sampling units”, as each tree may be differently attractive to adults. Our results demonstrated that the most important factors influencing the attraction of single trunks were wood volume, sun-exposure and decay stage. Based on the results obtained during the project LIFE MIPP, as well as on a literature review, a standard monitoring method for R. alpina was developed

Effect of Rearing Temperature on Growth and Microbiota Composition of Hermetia illucens

    Get PDF
The potential utilization of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) as food or feed is interesting due to the nutritive value and the sustainability of the rearing process. In the present study, larvae and prepupae of H. illucens were reared at 20, 27, and 33 °C, to determine whether temperature affects the whole insect microbiota, described using microbiological risk assessment techniques and 16S rRNA gene survey. The larvae efficiently grew across the tested temperatures. Higher temperatures promoted faster larval development and greater final biomass but also higher mortality. Viable Enterobacteriaceae, Bacillus cereus, Campylobacter, Clostridium perfringens, coagulase-positive staphylococci, Listeriaceae, and Salmonella were detected in prepupae. Campylobacter and Listeriaceae counts got higher with the increasing temperature. Based on 16S rRNA gene analysis, the microbiota of larvae was dominated by Providencia (>60%) and other Proteobateria (mainly Klebsiella) and evolved to a more complex composition in prepupae, with a bloom of Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Bacilli, while Providencia was still present as the main component. Prepupae largely shared the microbiota with the frass where it was reared, except for few lowly represented taxa. The rearing temperature was negatively associated with the amount of Providencia, and positively associated with a variety of other genera, such as Alcaligenes, Pseudogracilibacillus, Bacillus, Proteus, Enterococcus, Pediococcus, Bordetella, Pseudomonas, and Kerstersia. With respect to the microbiological risk assessment, attention should be paid to abundant genera, such as Bacillus, Myroides, Proteus, Providencia, and Morganella, which encompass species described as opportunistic pathogens, bearing drug resistances or causing severe morbidity

The tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) promotes survival and migration of acute myeloid leukemia cells through CD63/PI3K/Akt/p21 signaling

    Get PDF
We and others have shown that the Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1), a member of the inflammatory network exerting pleiotropic effects in the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment, regulates the survival and proliferation of different cell types, including normal hematopoietic progenitor cells. Moreover, TIMP-1 has been shown to be involved in cancer progression. However, its role in leukemic microenvironment has not been addressed. Here, we investigated the activity of TIMP-1 on Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) cell functions. First, we found that TIMP-1 levels were increased in the BM plasma of AML patients at diagnosis. In vitro, recombinant human (rh)TIMP-1 promoted the survival and cell cycle S-phase entry of AML cells. These kinetic effects were related to the downregulation of cyclindependent kinase inhibitor p21. rhTIMP-1 increases CXCL12-driven migration of leukemic cells through PI3K signaling. Interestingly, activation of CD63 receptor was required for TIMP-1's cytokine/chemokine activity. Of note, rhTIMP-1 stimulation modulated mRNA expression of Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1a, downstream of PI3K/Akt activation. We then co-cultured AML cells with normal or leukemic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to investigate the interaction of TIMP-1 with cellular component(s) of BM microenvironment. Our results showed that the proliferation and migration of leukemic cells were greatly enhanced by rhTIMP-1 in presence of AML-MSCs as compared to normal MSCs. Thus, we demonstrated that TIMP-1 modulates leukemic blasts survival, migration and function via CD63/PI3K/ Akt/p21 signaling. As a "bad actor" in a "bad soil", we propose TIMP-1 as a potential novel therapeutic target in leukemic BM microenvironment
