Global existence for a nonlocal model for adhesive contact

In this paper we address the analytical investigation of a model for adhesive contact, which includes nonlocal sources of damage on the contact surface, such as the elongation. The resulting PDE system features various nonlinearities rendering the unilateral contact conditions, the physical constraints on the internal variables, as well as the integral contributions related to the nonlocal forces. For the associated initial-boundary value problem we obtain a global-in-time existence result by proving the existence of a local solution via a suitable approximation procedure and then by extending the local solution to a global one by a nonstandard prolongation argument

A Qualitative Inquiry of the Interdisciplinary Engagement of Teacher\u27s and Therapist\u27s providing Virtual Services to Children with Disabilities

In this research project, my goal was to determine if using the sensory-based equipment, used in Sensory Fit Families, as a bridge helped promote interdisciplinary discussions leading to a better or more effective service delivery model. I did this research through virtual interviews and transcribing the data. I examined teachers’ and therapists’ perceptions toward interdisciplinary collaboration when delivering online (virtual) instruction to preschool-aged children with disabilities. With this, I was able to triangulate key information on relevant content, activities, and feedback that focus on a unique collaboration between Physical Education teachers, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Pathologists, and Special Education teachers. The school setting for this study was at Racker Center in Cortland, NY. Through the interview questions, I retained so much valuable information and hands-on experience to share and use in my future career as an Educator.https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/slides/1021/thumbnail.jp

Degree of non-K\"ahlerianity for 6-dimensional nilmanifolds

We use Bott-Chern cohomology to measure the non-K\"ahlerianity of 6-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with the invariant complex structures in M. Ceballos, A. Otal, L. Ugarte, and R. Villacampa's classification, [Invariant Complex Structures on 6-Nilmanifolds: Classification, Fr\"olicher Spectral Sequence and Special Hermitian Metrics, J. Geom. Anal. (2014)]. We investigate the existence of pluriclosed metric in connection with such a classification

Tourism Initiatives Developed through Collaboration with Foreign Organizations: The Emergence of Responsible Practices in Cuba

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Tourism Planning & Development on 7 July 2017, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/21568316.2017.1349688 This study concerns tourism initiatives by foreign organizations and their contributions to the emergence of responsible tourism in Cuba. Using the framework of Community Benefit Tourism Initiatives, this study investigates the local actors’ and the foreign organizations’ perspective on responsible tourism, the processes of planning and developing tourism initiatives, their implementation and the effects on the local communities. The empirical part concerns a case study about an initiative originated from a cultural development project by an Italian D-NGO and developed through the collaboration with an Italian tour operator. The findings suggest that, even in the case where such initiatives aren’t strategically planned and start with a limited participation of local actors, they can lead to important benefits for the local communities. The findings also suggest that these types of initiatives can constitute a solid basis for future developments with an increasing active participation by the local actors

Bayesian Measurement Error Correction in Structured Additive Distributional Regression with an Application to the Analysis of Sensor Data on Soil-Plant Variability

The flexibility of the Bayesian approach to account for covariates with measurement error is combined with semiparametric regression models for a class of continuous, discrete and mixed univariate response distributions with potentially all parameters depending on a structured additive predictor. Markov chain Monte Carlo enables a modular and numerically efficient implementation of Bayesian measurement error correction based on the imputation of unobserved error-free covariate values. We allow for very general measurement errors, including correlated replicates with heterogeneous variances. The proposal is first assessed by a simulation trial, then it is applied to the assessment of a soil-plant relationship crucial for implementing efficient agricultural management practices. Observations on multi-depth soil information forage ground-cover for a seven hectares Alfalfa stand in South Italy were obtained using sensors with very refined spatial resolution. Estimating a functional relation between ground-cover and soil with these data involves addressing issues linked to the spatial and temporal misalignment and the large data size. We propose a preliminary spatial interpolation on a lattice covering the field and subsequent analysis by a structured additive distributional regression model accounting for measurement error in the soil covariate. Results are interpreted and commented in connection to possible Alfalfa management strategies

Analysis of a unilateral contact problem taking into account adhesion and friction

AbstractIn this paper, we investigate a contact problem between a viscoelastic body and a rigid foundation, when both the effects of the (irreversible) adhesion and of the friction are taken into account. We describe the adhesion phenomenon in terms of a damage surface parameter according to Frémondʼs theory, and we model unilateral contact by Signorini conditions, and friction by a nonlocal Coulomb law. All the constraints on the internal variables as well as the contact and the friction conditions are rendered by means of subdifferential operators, whence the highly nonlinear character of the resulting PDE system. Our main result states the existence of a global-in-time solution (to a suitable variational formulation) of the related Cauchy problem. It is proved by an approximation procedure combined with time discretization
