Democracy as a Way of Life: Critical Reflections on a Deweyan Theme

    Get PDF
This article aims to critically assess John Dewey’s ideal of “democracy as a way of life”, an evocative though elusive moral and political ideal linked to both his communal notion of democracy and his reformist view of liberal-ism. Beyond the school, where citizenship education begins, Dewey claims that individuals learn democratic habits when they associate and participate in political activities, which are not solely confined to political institutions. Exploring Dewey’s democratic theory invites a twofold account. It takes to contextualize Dewey’s views in light of the political debates of his time, in particular the interwar debates on the crisis of liberalism and democracy. And it takes to examine his democratic thought in terms of educational theory and policy. Both aspects integrate into the argume

Analysis of the deep semiotic structure of Korea's propaganda messages

The following exploratory study analyzes and compares the propaganda of South Korea and North Korea. To do so, we used the Elements for a Communication Theory of Propaganda model, which is a semiothic analysis model developed by Pineda (2006). We will be focusing on propagados and propagandemas. We found that North Korea's propaganda met the goals of defending the State, exalting the leader, and the influence of China and the Sovietic Union. South Korea, on the other hand, based their propaganda in USA's political marketing model and on exalting political candidates, as well as the importance of the people

Extensión universitaria y formación docente : La alfabetización como práctica social y escolar

    Get PDF

Optimization and mechanisms for biodecoloration of a mixture of dyes by Trichosporon akiyoshidainum HP 2023

Trichosporon akiyoshidainum HP2023 is a basidiomycetous yeast isolated from Las Yungas rainforest (Tucumán, Argentina) and selected based on its outstanding textile-dye-decolorizing ability. In this work, the decolorization process was optimized using Reactive Black 5 as dye model. Lactose and urea were chosen as carbon and nitrogen sources through a one-at-time approach. Afterwards, factorial designs were employed for medium optimization, leading to the formulation of a simpler optimized medium which contains in g L−1: lactose 10, yeast extract 1, urea 0.5, KH2PO4 1 and MgSO4 1. Temperature and agitation conditions were also optimized. The optimized medium and incubation conditions for dye removal were extrapolated to other dyes individually and a mixture of them. Dye removal process happened through both biosorption and biodegradation mechanisms, depending primarily on the dye structure. A positive relation between initial inoculum and dye removal rate and a negative relation between initial dye concentration and final dye removal percentages were found. Under optimized conditions, T. akiyoshidainum HP2023 was able to completely remove a mixture of dyes up to a concentration of 300 mg L−1, a concentration much higher than those expected in real effluents.Fil: Martorell, María Martha. Finding Chemical Pathways Toward the Valorization of Automobile-Service-Station Wastes

    Get PDF
Automobile-service-station wastes make for an acute environmental concern because they contain polyaromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals, surfactants, and other harmful elements. An eco-friendly way to treat and take advantage of these wastes is embodied in the concept called "valorization". In the present work, valorization is described as a chemical process to remove solids from contaminated water and to stabilize oily sludge into a saponified product. Electrocoagulation and coagulation with aluminum were applied to separate oil-water emulsions and removed 99.7% of turbidity. Both coagulation processes obtained approximately 0.85 kg of treated water and 0.027 kg of dried oily sludge per kg of wastewater. A saponification process with dosages of 10% NaOH stabilized the dried oily sludge. In hopes of finding pathways to valorize wastes, chemical treatments with aluminum and NaOH obtained a product that can be used as a surfactant or as an energy source. Keywords: sludge, electrocoagulation, saponification, oil, wastewater

    Assisted Muscular Rehabilitation

In the market, there are very sophisticatedbiofeedback tools, such as those developed by meyerPT [1] orBiometric Ltd. [2], which provide information to the patientthrough tones and allows the generation of records and show datain real time. However, the cost of these tools makes difficult theaccess to them. This problem is what make the patients apply tothe expertise of a specialist and a qualitative valuation. For thisreason, this project focused on developing a friendly userbiofeedback interface created in MATLAB, which brings valuableinformation about muscular signals generated by the human bodyto avoid the subjectivity that may exist in the traditional method, reaching better results in less time thanks to the continuemonitoring and data recorders. The interface shows visualindicators, which are used to feedback the patient, in order topresent the execution of the muscular exercises at a certain forceintensity, analyses the muscular fatigue during the training andcreate a data record to identify the evolution of the muscleaccording to the developing of the therapy sessions

The insurance industry in modem Spanish history has not practically yet been studied, notwithstanding the considerable significance of this financial activity which is not only a reflection of economic development but also in itself motive power thereof. It may also be used as an indicator of the evolution of other sectors, since in the capitalist system everything of value is always insured. This paper is intended as a first approach to the insurance industry in Spain from 1800 to 1934 and as such it has been given a maximum of generality so as to present a framework which may be used for further investigation.Publicad
