Artisanal and small-scale mining on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego is aimed at the extraction of two resources: aggregates and peat. The former have a stone or earth origin, and are produced for the local construction industry. The latter, in turn, is derived from organic matter, and is mainly used in the agricultural and oil industry. According to the Mining Code, they are both defined as non-renewable, so stocks do not regenerate after they are mined. This work seeks, through a documentary analysis within the framework of a predominantly qualitative methodology, to characterize the economic activity of the mining sector, describe the current value chains, identify the key actors involved in the sector and analyze the legal framework that regulates the exploitation of both resources, in order to determine the type of sustainability that responds to the development of this activity on the island.Fil: Cantero, Camila Aldana. [EN] Abietane diterpenoids are naturally occurring plant metabolites with a broad spectrum of biological effects including antibacterial. antileishmanial, antitumor, antioxidant, as well as antiinfiammatory activities. Recently, we found that some analogues of natural ferruginol (2) actively inhibited dengue virus 2 (DENV-2) replication. Due to the similarity with DENY, we envisaged that abietane diteipenoids would also be active against Zika virus (ZIKV). Six selected semi-synthetic abietane derivatives of (+)-dehydroabietylatnine (3) were tested. Cytotoxicity was determined by Mn' assay in Vero cells. In vitro anti-ZIKV (clinical isolate. imT17) activity was evaluated by plaque assay. Interestingly, these molecules showed potential as anti-ZIKV agents, with EC50 values ranging from 0.67 to 18.57 mu M. and cytotoxicity (CC50 values) from 256 to 35.09 mu M. The 18-Oxoferruginol (8) (EC50 = 2.60 mu M, SI = 13.51) and 12-nitro-N-benzoyldehydroabietylamine (9) (ECG 0.67 mu M, SI = 3.82) were the most active compounds, followed by 12-hydroxy-N-tosyldehydroabietylamine (7) (EC50 = 3.58 mu M, SI = 3.20) and 12-hydroxy-N,N-phthaloyldehydroabietylamine (5) (EC50 = 7.76 mu M, SI = 1.23). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on anti-Zika virus properties of abietanes.Financial support from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, under a cooperation "ADSIDEO" research grant (AD1902), is gratefully acknowledged.

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: A large increase in the number of Brazilian studies on psychiatric genetics has been observed in the 1970's since the first publications conducted by a group of researchers in Brazil. Here we reviewed the literature and evaluated the advantages and difficulties of psychiatric genetic studies in the Brazilian population. CONCLUSION: The Brazilian population is one of the most heterogeneous populations in the world, formed mainly by the admixture between European, African and Native American populations. Although the admixture process is not a particularity of the Brazilian population, much of the history and social development in Brazil underlies the ethnic melting pot we observe nowadays. Such ethnical heterogeneity of the Brazilian population obviously brings some problems when performing genetic studies. However, the Brazilian population offers a number of particular characteristics that are of major interest when genetic studies are carried out, such as the presence of isolated populations. Thus, differences in the genetic profile and in the exposure to environmental risks may result in different interactions and pathways to psychopathology.OBJETIVO E MÉTODO: Desde a década de 70, quando os primeiros estudos em genética psiquiátrica conduzidos por um grupo de brasileiros foram publicados, o número de trabalhos realizados no Brasil vem aumentando consideravelmente.

    Get PDF

Demographic Histories of ERV-K in Humans, Chimpanzees and Rhesus Monkeys

    Get PDF
We detected 19 complete endogenous retroviruses of the K family in the genome of rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta; RhERV-K) and 12 full length elements in the genome of the common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes; CERV-K). These sequences were compared with 55 human HERV-K and 20 CERV-K reported previously, producing a total data set of 106 full-length ERV-K genomes. Overall, 61% of the human elements compared to 21% of the chimpanzee and 47% of rhesus elements had estimated integration times less than 4.5 million years before present (MYBP), with an average integration times of 7.8 MYBP, 13.4 MYBP and 10.3 MYBP for HERV-K, CERV-K and RhERV-K, respectively. By excluding those ERV-K sequences generated by chromosomal duplication, we used 63 of the 106 elements to compare the population dynamics of ERV-K among species. This analysis indicated that both HERV-K and RhERV-K had similar demographic histories, including markedly smaller effective population sizes, compared to CERV-K. We propose that these differing ERV-K dynamics reflect underlying differences in the evolutionary ecology of the host species, such that host ecology and demography represent important determinants of ERV-K dynamics
