Interaction patterns of brain activity across space, time and frequency. Part I: methods
We consider exploratory methods for the discovery of cortical functional
connectivity. Typically, data for the i-th subject (i=1...NS) is represented as
an NVxNT matrix Xi, corresponding to brain activity sampled at NT moments in
time from NV cortical voxels. A widely used method of analysis first
concatenates all subjects along the temporal dimension, and then performs an
independent component analysis (ICA) for estimating the common cortical
patterns of functional connectivity. There exist many other interesting
variations of this technique, as reviewed in [Calhoun et al. 2009 Neuroimage
45: S163-172]. We present methods for the more general problem of discovering
functional connectivity occurring at all possible time lags. For this purpose,
brain activity is viewed as a function of space and time, which allows the use
of the relatively new techniques of functional data analysis [Ramsay &
Silverman 2005: Functional data analysis. New York: Springer]. In essence, our
method first vectorizes the data from each subject, which constitutes the
natural discrete representation of a function of several variables, followed by
concatenation of all subjects. The singular value decomposition (SVD), as well
as the ICA of this new matrix of dimension [rows=(NT*NV); columns=NS] will
reveal spatio-temporal patterns of connectivity. As a further example, in the
case of EEG neuroimaging, Xi of size NVxNW may represent spectral density for
electric neuronal activity at NW discrete frequencies from NV cortical voxels,
from the i-th EEG epoch. In this case our functional data analysis approach
would reveal coupling of brain regions at possibly different frequencies.Comment: Technical report 2011-March-15, The KEY Institute for Brain-Mind

Volitional ethanol consumption as a function of auditorily induced stress
The literature on alcohol is replete with studies attempting to determine whether or not the relief of tension (i.e.; certain hypothesized aversive states such as fear, anxiety, and frustration, which ~an influence behavior) plays a role in the etiology of moderate and excessive drinking by humans. The classic presentation of the tension reduction hypothesis (TRH) by Conger (1956) provided the impetus for the analysis of chronic alcohol consumption using animal subjects. By applying established behaviorist principles to the problem of chronic excessive drinking he developed a theory which accounts fer this behavioral phenomenon. ·According to his theory, the response of drinking alcohol is one of many possible tension reducing responses in the organism\u27s repertoire. This theory suggests that the human user of alcohol exhibits the drinking response as a consequence of some tension state and that the sedative action of alcohol serves as a reinforcer of the response by reducing the tension state
Traumatic Spondylopelvic Dissociation: A Report of Two Cases of Spondylolisthesis at L5-S1 and Review of Literature.
Study Design Retrospective chart review and review of literature. Objective Few case reports of traumatic L5-S1 displacement have been presented in the literature. Here we present two cases of traumatic spondylolisthesis showing both anterior and posterior displacement, the treatment algorithm, and a review of the literature. Methods The authors conducted a retrospective review of representative patients and a literature review of traumatic spondylolisthesis at the L5-S1 junction. Two representative patients were identified with traumatic spondylolisthesis: one with an anterior dissociation, and the other with a posterior dissociation. Results Radiographic, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging illustrated the bony and soft tissue injury found in each patient, as well as the final stabilization and outcomes. Operative stabilization was necessary, and both patients were treated with open reduction internal fixation. The patient with posterior dissociation had complete recovery without neurologic sequelae. The patient with anterior dissociation had persistent bilateral L5-S1 radiculopathy with intact rectal tone, due to neurologic compression. Conclusions Few cases of traumatic spondylopelvic dissociation that are isolated to the L5-S1 disk space are described in the literature. We examined both an anterior and a posterior dissociation and treated both with L5-S1 posterior spinal fusion. The patient with anterior dissociation had persistent L5-S1 root injury; however, the patient with posterior dissociation had no neurologic deficits. This is the opposite of what is expected based on anatomy. These cases offer insight into the management of anterior and posterior L5-S1 spondylopelvic dissociation

Guatemala’s intangible cultural heritage: the Agreement on Identity and Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Compliance after 1995. Some examples.
In 1995, the Agreement on Identity and Rights
of Indigenous Peoples was signed in Guatemala.
More than 20 years later, some progress has been
made but the number of claims and suits for noncompliance with the Agreement is rising daily.
However, an analysis of the road travelled since its
signing indicates that it is not the Agreement which
is at fault; rather, it is the lack of tolerance and
education of some Guatemalans that has prevented
community integration and identification within a
framework of respect and harmony
Open business intelligence: on the importance of data quality awareness in user-friendly data mining
Citizens demand more and more data for making decisions in their daily life. Therefore, mechanisms that allow citizens to understand and analyze linked open data (LOD) in a user-friendly manner are highly required. To this aim, the concept of Open Business Intelligence (OpenBI) is introduced in this position paper. OpenBI facilitates non-expert users to (i) analyze and visualize LOD, thus generating actionable information by means of reporting, OLAP analysis, dashboards or data mining; and to (ii) share the new acquired information as LOD to be reused by anyone. One of the most challenging issues of OpenBI is related to data mining, since non-experts (as citizens) need guidance during preprocessing and application of mining algorithms due to the complexity of the mining process and the low quality of the data sources. This is even worst when dealing with LOD, not only because of the different kind of links among data, but also because of its high dimensionality. As a consequence, in this position paper we advocate that data mining for OpenBI requires data quality-aware mechanisms for guiding non-expert users in obtaining and sharing the most reliable knowledge from the available LOD
