Spontaneous charge carrier localization in extended one-dimensional systems

Charge carrier localization in extended atomic systems has been described previously as being driven by disorder, point defects or distortions of the ionic lattice. Here we show for the first time by means of first-principles computations that charge carriers can spontaneously localize due to a purely electronic effect in otherwise perfectly ordered structures. Optimally-tuned range-separated density functional theory and many-body perturbation calculations within the GW approximation reveal that in trans-polyacetylene and polythiophene the hole density localizes on a length scale of several nanometers. This is due to exchange-induced translational symmetry breaking of the charge density. Ionization potentials, optical absorption peaks, excitonic binding energies and the optimally-tuned range parameter itself all become independent of polymer length as it exceeds the critical localization scale. Moreover, lattice disorder and the formation of a polaron result from the charge localization in contrast to the traditional view that lattice distortions precede charge localization. Our results can explain experimental findings that polarons in conjugated polymers form instantaneously after exposure to ultrafast light pulses.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Ground-state degeneracies leave recognizable topological scars in the one-particle density

In Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) a fictitious system of non-interacting particles is constructed having the same ground-state (GS) density as the physical system of interest. A fundamental open question in DFT concerns the ability of an exact KS calculation to spot and characterize the GS degeneracies in the physical system. In this article we provide theoretical evidence suggesting that the GS density, as a function of position on a 2D manifold of parameters affecting the external potential, is "topologically scarred" in a distinct way by degeneracies. These scars are sufficiently detailed to enable determination of the positions of degeneracies and even the associated Berry phases. We conclude that an exact KS calculation can spot and characterize the degeneracies of the physical system

[EN] Burnout Syndrome as symptomatic response to work stress that appears in professions with high workload and responsibility, and that is manifested in health professions, is hamful both personally employed in psychiatric symptoms involved, and a social level for damage which may result in patient care. The presence of the Syndrome in the hospitals services at different locations of Spain and with special presence in the emergencies, demonstrates the need for a prevalence study indicating the status of the current national problems in these services, as determining the presence of the Syndrome in the other medical staff. We will determine the prevalence of the Burnout Syndrome in the National Health System in Spain, and we will identify the emergencies as a professional area of highest risk The proposed study will be descriptive cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of the Syndrome. The selection of subjects that form part of the sample will take place at random (probability) between health professional services in order to make a methodological description of the current situation and determine the professional emergency area as vulnerable based on their characteristics. To identify the presence of the Syndrome we will use MBI Maslach Burnout Inventory (1986), once the strengths and weaknesses in the assessment instrument will be analyzed. Also we will use the Symptom Check List SCL-90-Revised (2002) to complement the results of MBI, after reviewing an analysis of their behavior in a clinical sample

[Abstract] This paper presents SeQual, a scalable tool to efficiently perform quality control of large genomic datasets. Our tool currently supports more than 30 different operations (e.g., filtering, trimming, formatting) that can be applied to DNA/RNA reads in FASTQ/FASTA formats to improve subsequent downstream analyses, while providing a simple and user-friendly graphical interface for non-expert users. Furthermore, SeQual takes full advantage of Big Data technologies to process massive datasets on distributed-memory systems such as clusters by relying on the open-source Apache Spark cluster computing framework. Our scalable Spark-based implementation allows to reduce the runtime from more than three hours to less than 20 minutes when processing a paired-end dataset with 251 million reads per input file on an 8-node multi-core cluster.10.13039/501100004837-Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain (Grant Number: TIN2016-75845-P and PID2019-104184RB-I00) 10.13039/501100004837-AEI/FEDER/EU (Grant Number: 10.13039/501100011033) 10.13039/501100010801-Xunta de Galicia and FEDER funds (Centro de Investigación de Galicia accreditation 2019–2022 and the Consolidation Program of Competitive Reference Groups) (Grant Number: ED431G 2019/01 and ED431C 2017/04)Xunta de Galicia; ED431G 2019/01Xunta de Galicia; ED431C 2017/0

Analysis of the relationships between Patagonian squid (Doryteuthis gahi)

    Get PDF
Doryteuthis (Loligo) gahi is the second most important cephalopod species in the SW Atlantic from a fisheries point of view. This species and hence, the fisheries profitability and sustainability, are subject to large inter-annual variability in recruitment strength, mainly due to interannual and seasonal variations of the Falkland/Malvinas Current. In this working document we analyse the environmental, geographical, temporal and physical factors affecting the distribution (abundance) of D. gahi in two areas where its abundance is highest, using geographic information systems tools. We found a slight positive correlation between CPUE and longitude, as well as between CPUE and depth in the northern area, but no correlations could be found between SST and the other explanatory variables. Regarding the southern area in summer-autumn, we found that CPUE increases with longitude as we go to the east, and with latitude. We also found positive correlations between SST and CPUE, as well as with depth. In winter spring our study revealed a slight relationship between CPUE and location, and with depth

Analysis of the relationship between Argentine short-finned squid (Illex argentinus) abundance and environmental parameters in the SW Atlantic Ocean using GIS tools

The Argentine short-finned squid Illex argentinus is the main cephalopod species which occurs in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. It is the most highly fished species in terms of catches and is the major target of large-scale directed fishing carried out by “jiggers”, and to a lesser extent, by trawlers. The variability of main current systems in the region (Brazil and Falkland/Malvinas Currents) has been suggested to influence the abundance and distribution of I. argentinus, thus largely affecting profitability and sustainability of the fisheries. In this working document we analyse the environmental, geographical, temporal and physical factors affecting the distribution (abundance) of I. argentinus in two areas of highest distribution, using geographic information systems tools. Strong correlation was found between Illex abundance and the season of the year, as well as with latitude, confirming our knowledge of the fishery and the literature on this specie

Introduction The relationship between EHG (temporal pattern, IEMG, power spectra ) and the biomechanical parameter in isometric and dynamic muscle tension represents an essential method in the analysis of the specificity of training effects and of the individual characteristics in motor control modelling and in practical motor learning. METHODS Force-time, power-time relationships under concentric and isometric conditions (MVC) with and without preloading were determined. For EHG purpose, surface electrodes (O= 5 mm; interelectrode distance 40 mm) were placed over the belly of each muscle (Tric.br.;Bic.br.; Delt.an.; Pect.ma.). Bipolar myoelectrical potentials were recorded with the passive electrode placed between the two actives: signals were preamplified and band-pass filtered (CMRRT 70 db, BP= 10 Hz- 1 KHz: Zin=1,5 MR. gain= 1000). EMG signals and the force were digitized on-line with a sampling frequency of 1000 Hz. For time structure analysis EMG signals were full-wave rectified and bandpass filtered (20-70 Hz) to obtain envelop curve patterns of each muscle. Power spectra analysis (median frequency MF) were performed using 1024 and pl2 data points. 3 groups (n=4) of sport students were involved in the investigation. Subjects performed a 8 week training period under different loading conditions. RESULTS # In the concentric tasks subjects show individual strategies in the muscular coordination patterns dependent on the load intensity. # Differences in the muscular interactivity pattern are not necessarily matching similar variation in the mechanical output. # For increasing loads there is a linear relationship between muscular activation level and mechanical power output. # In the power spectra, trends are consistent but also discontinuous. Median frequency could possibly indicate that some subjects have resources in motor units recruitment . # Other considerations are discussed referring to the muscular activation and the isometric MVC under preloading conditions
