El programa, que ha pasado por diversas fases en tres años, utiliza la mentoría de alumnos ve-teranos. Pese a la reducida participación, ha posibilitado el desarrollo de diversas actividades formativas y socializantes (para mentores y mentoriza-dos), así como un mejor conocimiento de los problemas que afectan a los alumnos noveles.Universidad de Málaga.     A1298C polymorphism in the MTHFR gene predisposes to cardiovascular risk in rheumatoid arthritis

    8 páginas, 1 figura, 3 tablas.-- et al.[Introduction]: We determined the contribution of the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677 C>T and 1298 A>C gene polymorphisms to the susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We also assessed whether these two MTHFR gene polymorphisms may be implicated in the development of cardiovascular (CV) events and subclinical atherosclerosis manifested by the presence of endothelial dysfunction, in a series of Spanish patients with RA. [Methods]: Six hundred and twelve patients fulfilling the 1987 American College of Rheumatology classification criteria for RA, seen at the rheumatology outpatient clinics of Hospital Xeral-Calde, Lugo and Hospital San Carlos, Madrid, were studied. Patients and controls (n = 865) were genotyped using predesigned TaqMan SNP genotyping assays. [Results]: No significant differences in allele or genotype frequencies for the MTHFR gene polymorphisms between RA patients and controls were found. Also, no association between the MTHFR 677 C>T polymorphism and CV events or endothelial dysfunction was observed. However, the MTHFR 1298 allele C frequency was increased in patients with CV events after 5 years (38.7% versus 30.3%; odds ratio = 1.45; 95% confidence interval = 1.00 to 2.10; P = 0.04) and 10 years (42.2% versus 31.0%; odds ratio = 1.62; 95% confidence interval = 1.08 to 2.43; P = 0.01) follow up. Moreover, patients carrying the MTHFR 1298 AC and CC genotypes had a significantly decreased flow-mediated endothelium-dependent vasodilatation (4.3 ± 3.9%) compared with those carrying the MTHFR 1298 AA genotype (6.5 ± 4.4%) (P = 0.005). [Conclusions]: Our results show that the MTHFR 1298 A>C gene polymorphism confers an increased risk for subclinical atherosclerosis and CV events in patients with RA.The present study was supported by two grants from Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias PI06-0024 and PS09/00748 (Spain).     Assessment of the variability of the I-V characteristic of HfO2-based resistive switching devices and its simulation using the quasi-static memdiode model

    Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABVariability of the conduction characteristics of filamentary-type resistive switching devices or resistive RAMs (RRAMs) is a hot research topic both in academia and industry because it is currently considered one of the major showstoppers for the successful development and application of this technology. In this work, we thoroughly investigate the statistics of the cycle-to-cycle (C2C) variability observed in the experimental current-voltage (I-V) curves of HfO-based memristive structures using the fitdistrplus package for the R language. This exploratory analysis allows us to identify which parametric probability distributions are the most suitable candidates for describing our data. This study involves graphical tools such as the density, skewness-kurtosis (S-K), and quantile-quantile (Q-Q) plots. The analysis is completed with the aid of goodness-of-fit statistics (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Cramer-von Mises, Anderson-Darling) and criteria (Akaike's and Bayesian). The selected distributions are incorporated into the SPICE script of the quasi-static memdiode model for resistive switching devices and used for simulating uncorrelated C2C variability. Finally, a one-way sensitivity analysis is carried out in order to test the impact of the model parameters variation in the output characteristics of the device

    MicroRNA MIR396 regulates the switch between stem cells and transit-amplifying cells in arabidopsis roots

    To ensure an adequate organ mass, the daughters of stem cells progress through a transit-amplifying phase displaying rapid cell division cycles before differentiating. Here, we show that Arabidopsis thaliana microRNA miR396 regulates the transition of root stem cells into transit-amplifying cells by interacting with GROWTH-REGULATING FACTORs (GRFs). The GRFs are expressed in transit-amplifying cells but are excluded from the stem cells through inhibition by miR396. Inactivation of the GRFs increases the meristem size and induces periclinal formative divisions in transit-amplifying cells. The GRFs repress PLETHORA (PLT) genes, regulating their spatial expression gradient. Conversely, PLT activates MIR396 in the stem cells to repress the GRFs. We identified a pathway regulated by GRF transcription factors that represses stem cell-promoting genes in actively proliferating cells, which is essential for the progression of the cell cycle and the orientation of the cell division plane. If unchecked, the expression of the GRFs in the stem cell niche suppresses formative cell divisions and distorts the organization of the quiescent center. We propose that the interactions identified here between miR396 and GRF and PLT transcription factors are necessary to establish the boundary between the stem cell niche and the transit-amplifying region.Fil: Rodriguez Virasoro, Ramiro Esteban.     Analysis of the upconversion emission of yttrium orthoaluminate nanoperovskite co-doped with Er3+/Yb3+ ions for thermal sensing applications

    [EN] The upconversion emissions of yttrium orthoaluminate nano-perovskite co-doped with Er3+/Yb3+ have been studied. Strong green and red upconversion emissions, which can be observed by naked eyes, were observed when exciting the sample at 980 nm. In particular, the green band was monitored as a function of temperature and the obtained results suggest that this nano-perovskite can be used as an optical temperature sensor by exciting in the infrared range.     Features and impact of missing values in the association of self-rated health with mortality in care homes: a longitudinal study

    BACKGROUND: Self-rated health (SRH) is a health measure used in studies of older adults. The objective of this study is to analyze SRH as a predictor of mortality in the institutionalized older population and the characteristics of those who do not provide information about their SRH on health questionnaires. METHODS: This is a 15-year follow-up study of older adult residents in nursing or care homes in of Madrid, Spain. SRH was measured on a 5-point Likert type scale. The association between answering the SRH question and socio-demographic and health characteristics was evaluated through prevalence ratio (PR), estimated by Poisson regression models. Survival rates associated with SRH were studied through a multivariate Cox regression. RESULTS: The sample has a mean age of 83.4 (standard deviation, SD = 7.3), with 75.7% women. Twelve percent did not answer the SRH item. Those who did not answer showed a higher probability of disability (Barthel index, PR = 0.76, 95% confidence interval = 0.67-0.86) and/or dementia (PR = 8.03, 3.38-19.03). A trend for higher mortality was observed in those persons who did not respond (adjusted hazard ratio HR = 1.26, 0.75-2.11). The mortality rate was 32% higher for those who declared poor SRH in comparison with those who reported good SRH (adjusted HR = 1.32, 1.08-1.6). CONCLUSIONS: There is an elevated number of people who do not respond to the SRH item, mainly those with disabilities and cognitive deterioration.     Meta-DiSc 2.0:a web application for meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy data

    BACKGROUND: Diagnostic evidence of the accuracy of a test for identifying a target condition of interest can be estimated using systematic approaches following standardized methodologies. Statistical methods for the meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) studies are relatively complex, presenting a challenge for reviewers without extensive statistical expertise. In 2006, we developed Meta-DiSc, a free user-friendly software to perform test accuracy meta-analysis. This statistical program is now widely used for performing DTA meta-analyses. We aimed to build a new version of the Meta-DiSc software to include statistical methods based on hierarchical models and an enhanced web-based interface to improve user experience. RESULTS: In this article, we present the updated version, Meta-DiSc 2.0, a web-based application developed using the R Shiny package. This new version implements recommended state-of-the-art statistical models to overcome the limitations of the statistical approaches included in the previous version. Meta-DiSc 2.0 performs statistical analyses of DTA reviews using a bivariate random effects model. The application offers a thorough analysis of heterogeneity, calculating logit variance estimates of sensitivity and specificity, the bivariate I-squared, the area of the 95% prediction ellipse, and the median odds ratios for sensitivity and specificity, and facilitating subgroup and meta-regression analyses. Furthermore, univariate random effects models can be applied to meta-analyses with few studies or with non-convergent bivariate models. The application interface has an intuitive design set out in four main menus: file upload; graphical description (forest and ROC plane plots); meta-analysis (pooling of sensitivity and specificity, estimation of likelihood ratios and diagnostic odds ratio, sROC curve); and summary of findings (impact of test through downstream consequences in a hypothetical population with a given prevalence). All computational algorithms have been validated in several real datasets by comparing results obtained with STATA/SAS and MetaDTA packages. CONCLUSION: We have developed and validated an updated version of the Meta-DiSc software that is more accessible and statistically sound. The web application is freely available at www.metadisc.es
