    Influence of initial body weight, beak trimming, and inclusion of Na-butyrate in the diet on growth performance, body weight uniformity, and digestive tract traits of brown pullets from hatching to 16 wk of age

    The influence of initial BW and beak trimming on growth performance, BW uniformity, and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) traits was studied in brown pullets fed diets supplemented or not with 0.3% Na-butyrate (Butirex C4; Novation 2002 S. L.) from hatching to 16 wk of age. The GIT traits studied were the pH, relative weight (RW, g/kg BW), and fresh contents of the GIT organs and the relative length (cm/kg BW) of the small intestine and cecum, at 5, 10, and 16 wk of age. There were 12 treatments organized as a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial, with the initial BW of the pullets at hatching (34.2 vs. 37.9 g), beak trimming procedure [low (L-0) or high (H-0) intensity of infrared treatment applied at the hatchery, and traditional beak trimming at 8 d of age (F-8)], and inclusion of Na-butyrate in the diet (0 vs. 0.3%) as main effects. No interactions among main effects were detected for any of the variables studied and therefore, only main effects are presented

    Shear-induced microstructural transitions in aqueous systems containing an esterquat cationic surfactant

    Se presenta un estudio basado en técnicas reológicas y de microscopía electrónica de barrido de bajas temperaturas (cryo-SEM) sobre los cambios de microestructura provocados por el flujo en cizalla de dispersiones acuosas de un tensioactivo catiónico tipo esterquat. Se comparan micrografías de cryo-SEM y las respuestas bajo cizalla oscilatoria de dispersiones sin y con cloruro de calcio. Esta última no presenta zona de comportamiento viscoelástico lineal, apuntando su respuesta no lineal a un fenómeno de estructuración inducida por cizalla. Ensayos transitorios de inicio al flujo, entre 0,1s-1 y 2000s-1, confirman que se producen aumentos de viscosidad más acusados con el tiempo de flujo a medida que aumenta la velocidad de cizalla. La técnica de cryo-SEM apoya que los resultados transitorios se deben a que un exceso de energía mecánica provoca transiciones de bicapas de tensioactivo a vesículas. Diferentes ensayos reológicos realizados en serie avalan la naturaleza irreversible, en la escala de tiempo de esta investigación, de las transiciones microestructurales inducidas por cizalla. Se demuestra que a pesar de la presencia de cloruro de calcio (0,1%), la aplicación de una velocidad de cizalla excesiva puede dar lugar a la aparición de respuestas viscoelásticas lineales significativas.This paper deals with a rheological and microstructural (cryo- SEM) characterization of shear-induced microstructure transitions in aqueous dispersions of an esterquat cationic surfactant. Cryo-SEM micrographs and oscillatory shear results of systems containing or not calcium chloride are compared. The addition of calcium chloride precluded the occurrence of significant viscoelastic properties and the estimation of the linear viscoelastic range. The non-linear oscillatory response pointed to the occurrence of incipient shear-induced build-up phenomena. Start-up flow tests between 0.1s-1 and 2000s-1 showed that the increase of viscosity with shear time was more marked as shear rate was increased. Cryo-SEM observations supported that build-up results in transient flow were due to an excess of mechanical energy, which resulted in transitions from surfactant bilayers to vesicles. Several series of rheological tests were carried out to demonstrate that shear-induced microstructure transitions were irreversible in the time scale of this investigation. Despite the addition of calcium chloride (0.1% wt), the shear-induced dispersion of vesicles may provoke the onset of significant linear viscoelasticity.Es presenta un estudi basat en tècniques reològiques i de microscòpia electrònica d’escombratge de baixes temperaturas (cryo-SEM) sobre els canvis de microestructura provocats pel flux en cisalla de dispersions aquoses d’un tensioactiu catiònic tipus esterquat. Es comparen micrografies de cryo-SEM i les respostes sota cisallament oscil•latòri de dispersions sense i amb clorur de calci. Aquesta darrera no presenta zona de comportament viscoelàstic lineal, apuntant la seva resposta no lineal a un fenomen d’estructuració induïda per cisallament. Assaigs transitoris d’inici al flux, entre 0,1s-1 y 2000s-1, confirmen que es produeixen augments de viscositat més acusats amb el temps de flux a mesura que augmenta la velocitat de cisallament. La técnica de cryo-SEM recolza que els resultats transitoris es deuen a que un excés d’energia mecànica provoca transicions de bicapes de tensioactiu a vesícules.     The Cognitive Scale of Basic and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living for Multidomain Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Patients: Validation of its Extended Version

    The Ext. Cog-ADL Scale demonstrated good psychometric properties. Episodic and working memory tests were the main predictors of most cognitive-functional items of the scale. While patients with dementia obtained lower scores in most error categories of the scale, affecting both BADL and IADL, mdMCI patients showed a more specific pattern of difficulties.     Integración de personas con discapacidad en la Economía social. Elementos facilitadores y obstáculos detectados

    La integración efectiva de las personas con discapacidad en la sociedad pasa por su incorporación en el mercado laboral. Más allá de las ventajas y desventajas de las diferentes políticas laborales, es importante profundizar en el estudio de los factores que favorecen su integración, especialmente en el mercado laboral ordinario. La Economía social se caracteriza por una serie de principios diferenciales, entre los que cabe destacar la valorización del ser humano y la generación de valor social por encima de los resultados económicos o financieros. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es analizar la contribución de la Economía social a la cohesión social en términos del empleo de trabajadores/as con discapacidad, y en particular, el cumplimiento de la cuota de reserva y, detectar tanto los elementos facilitadores como los principales obstáculos encontrados sobre los que trabajar en el diseño de políticas laborales para una mejor y mayor incorporación del colectivo. Para ello, se ha realizado una encuesta ad-hoc dirigida a empresas y entidades de la Economía social. Los resultados muestran que las entidades de la Economía social cumplen en su mayoría con la cuota de reserva, siendo este cumplimiento el principal facilitador de la integración de personas con discapacidad en sus plantillas, junto con la existencia de ayudas y/o desgravaciones fiscales. La mayoría de las entidades no encuentran dificultades en la integración del colectivo, aunque sí reconocen tener que enfrentarse a dificultades relacionadas con la adaptación de la persona al puesto y al entorno

    Rare-earth-doped fluoride nanoparticles with engineered long luminescence lifetime for time-gated: In vivo optical imaging in the second biological window

    Biomedicine is continuously demanding new luminescent materials to be used as optical probes for the acquisition of high resolution, high contrast and high penetration in vivo images. These materials, in combination with advanced techniques, could constitute the first step towards new diagnosis and therapy tools. In this work, we report on the synthesis of long lifetime rare-earth-doped fluoride nanoparticles by adopting different strategies: core/shell and dopant engineering. The here developed nanoparticles show intense infrared emission in the second biological window with a long luminescence lifetime close to 1 millisecond. These two properties make the here presented nanoparticles excellent candidates for time-gated infrared optical bioimaging. Indeed, their potential application as optical imaging contrast agents for autofluorescence-free in vivo small animal imaging has been demonstrated, allowing high contrast real-time tracking of gastrointestinal absorption of nanoparticles and transcranial imaging of intracerebrally injected nanoparticles in the murine brainThis work was supported in part by the grants from the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities, China (HIT.     Influenza A H1N1 Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Characteristics and Risk Factors—A Case-Control Study

    Introduction. Influenza A H1N1 community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a quite frequent respiratory disease. Despite being considered more serious than other CAPs, there are very few studies comparing its characteristics with noninfluenza CAP. We aim to establish the differences between pneumonia due to H1N1 virus and pneumonia not caused by H1N1 influenza virus and to determine the probability that a pneumonia is due to an H1N1 virus infection based on the most relevant variables. Methods. We used a case-control study where cases were H1N1 CAP patients with confirmed microbiological diagnosis and controls were patients with CAP admitted to hospital. H1N1 and other influenza types were discarded among controls. We calculated the probability of being a case or control using multivariate logistic regression. Results. We included 99 cases and 270 controls. Cases were younger than controls (53 vs 71 years, respectively). Mortality was much higher for H1N1 patients (13% vs 0.3%), and admission to intensive care unit was more frequent for H1N1 cases. The variables most associated with presenting H1N1 CAP were bilateral affectation on chest X-rays (OR: 5.70; 95% CI 2.69–10.40), followed by presence of arthromyalgias, with cases presenting close to three times more arthromyalgias compared to controls. Low leukocytes count and high AST values were also significantly associated with H1N1 CAP. H1N1 CAPs are characterized by bilateral affectation, low leukocyte count, presence of arthromyalgias, and high AST. Conclusions. A few and easy to obtain clinical parameters might be extremely useful to distinguish H1N1 CAP from CAPs of other origin.S

    Multicentric Standardization of protocols for the diagnosis of human mitochondrial respiratory chain defects

    The quantification of mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) enzymatic activities is essential for diagnosis of a wide range of mitochondrial diseases, ranging from inherited defects to secondary dysfunctions. MRC lesion is frequently linked to extended cell damage through the generation of proton leak or oxidative stress, threatening organ viability and patient health. However, the intrinsic challenge of a methodological setup and the high variability in measuring MRC enzymatic activities represents a major obstacle for comparative analysis amongst institutions. To improve experimental and statistical robustness, seven Spanish centers with extensive experience in mitochondrial research and diagnosis joined to standardize common protocols for spectrophotometric MRC enzymatic measurements using minimum amounts of sample. Herein, we present the detailed protocols, reference ranges, tips and troubleshooting methods for experimental and analytical setups in different sample preparations and tissues that will allow an international standardization of common protocols for the diagnosis of MRC defects. Methodological standardization is a crucial step to obtain comparable reference ranges and international standards for laboratory assays to set the path for further diagnosis and research in the field of mitochondrial diseases

    Polypropylene and polyvinylidene fluoride transobturator slings for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence : 1-Year outcomes from a multicentre randomized trial

    Finançament de: Fundación Dexeus Salud de la Mujer; CardiolinkTo compare the effectiveness and safety of polypropylene (PP) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) transobturator tapes (TOT) for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This is a multicentre randomized trial. Women with SUI or stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence and scheduled for a TOT procedure were randomized to PP or PVDF slings. The primary outcome was 1-year cure or improvement rate using composite criteria. Complications were also compared. Relationships with outcomes were analyzed using multivariable logistic regressions models. From April 2016 to January 2018 285 participants were randomized. PP and PVDF slings showed similar high cure or improvement rate (91.0% vs. 95.6%, p = .138). Improvement in validated questionnaires was also similar. PVDF slings were associated with a lower rate of de novo urgency incontinence (adjusted odds ratio = 0.35; 95% confidence interval = 0.15-0.80). We found no statistical differences in complications rates, although a higher incidence of long-term pain events were observed in the PP group. The study is underpowered to find differences in specific complications owing to the low number of events. PP and PVDF TOTs are equally effective, although PVDF is associated with fewer cases of de novo urgency incontinence. Further studies are needed to give robust conclusions on safety profiles

    Control of a hippocampal recurrent excitatory circuit by cannabinoid receptor-interacting protein Gap43

    The type-1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1R) is widely expressed in excitatory and inhibitory nerve terminals, and by suppressing neurotransmitter release, its activation modulates neural circuits and brain function. While the interaction of CB1R with various intracellular proteins is thought to alter receptor signaling, the identity and role of these proteins are poorly understood.Using a highthroughput proteomic analysis complemented with an array of in vitro and in vivo approaches in the mouse brain, we report that the C-terminal, intracellular domain of CB1R interacts specifically with growth-associated protein of 43 kDa (GAP43). The CB1R-GAP43 interaction occurs selectively at mossy cell axon boutons, which establish excitatory synapses with dentate granule cells in the hippocampus. This interaction impairs CB1R-mediated suppression of mossy cell to granule cell transmission, thereby inhibiting cannabinoidmediated anti-convulsant activity inmice. Thus, GAP43 acts as a synapse typespecific regulatory partner of CB1R that hampers CB1R-mediated effects on hippocampal circuit function

    Development and validation of a clinical score to estimate progression to severe or critical state in Covid-19 pneumonia hospitalized patients

    The prognosis of a patient with Covid-19 pneumonia is uncertain. Our objective was to establish a predictive model of disease progression to facilitate early decision-making. A retrospective study was performed of patients admitted with Covid-19 pneumonia, classified as severe (admission to the intensive care unit, mechanic invasive ventilation, or death) or non-severe. A predictive model based on clinical, analytical, and radiological parameters was built. The probability of progression to severe disease was estimated by logistic regression analysis. Calibration and discrimination (receiver operating characteristics curves and AUC) were assessed to determine model performance. During the study period 1,152 patients presented with Covid-19 infection, of whom 229 (19.9%) were admitted for pneumonia. During hospitalization, 51 (22.3%) progressed to severe disease, of whom 26 required ICU care (11.4); 17 (7.4%) underwent invasive mechanical ventilation, and 32 (14%) died of any cause. Five predictors determined within 24 hours of admission were identified: Diabetes, Age, Lymphocyte count, SaO2, and pH (DALSH score). The prediction model showed a good clinical performance, including discrimination (AUC 0.87 CI 0.81, 0.92) and calibration (Brier score = 0.11). In total, 0%, 12%, and 50% of patients with severity risk scores ≤5%, 6-25%, and >25% exhibited disease progression, respectively.
