Cuatro Cienegas basin (CCB) is a biodiversity reservoir within the Chihuahuan desert that includes several water systems subject to marked seasonality. While several studies have focused on biodiversity inventories, this is the first study that describes seasonal changes in diversity within the basin. We sampled Pseudomonas populations from a seasonally variable water system at four different sampling dates (August 2003, January 2004, January 2005, and August 2005). A total of 70 Pseudomonas isolates across seasons were obtained, genotyped by fingerprinting (BOX-PCR), and taxonomically characterized by 16S rDNA sequencing. We found 35 unique genotypes, and two numerically dominant lineages (16S rDNA sequences) that made up 64% of the sample: P. cuatrocienegasensis and P. otitidis. We did not recover genotypes across seasons, but lineages reoccurred across seasons; P. cuatrocienegasensis was isolated exclusively in winter, while P. otitidis was only recovered in summer. We statistically show that taxonomic identity of isolates is not independent of the sampling season, and that winter and summer populations are different. In addition to the genetic description of populations, we show exploratory measures of growth rates at different temperatures, suggesting physiological differences between populations. Altogether, the results indicate seasonal changes in diversity of free-living aquatic Pseudomonas populations from CCB

Tesis (Pedagogía en Inglés)The importance of drama activities as a key element in the acquisition of a second language has been acknowledged by theorists and researchers of the area who consider this tool as an important factor to increase student’s motivation and to develop communicative skills such as oral performance. The main objective of this research was to prove empirically, through a quasi-experimental design, the effectiveness of drama activities to improve student’s oral production and motivation. These activities were adapted to the reality of the Chilean classroom according to the different contexts of foreign language learning in the Windmill College municipal school located in Villa Alemana, the subsidized school Embajadores del Rey, and finally the private school Hebreo Dr Jaim Weitzman located in Viña del Mar. The quasi-experiment was implemented in high school, with the participation of 3 classes, making a total of 50 students. The implementation of drama took place in the second semester of 2018 and lasted approximately six weeks. The results show that the strategy is, in fact, effective in secondary education.

Machine Learning for Detection of Cognitive Impairment

    Get PDF
The detection of cognitive problems, especially in the early stages, is critical and the method by which it is diagnosed is manual and depends on one or more specialist doctors, to diagnose it as the cognitive decline escalates into the early stage of dementia, e.g., Alzheimer's disease (AD). The early stages of AD are very similar to Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI); it is essential to identify the possible factors associated with the disease. This research aims to demonstrate that automated models can differentiate and classify MCI and AD in the early stages. The present research used a combination of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to identify AD, using gene expressions. The algorithms used for the classification of cognitive problems and healthy people (control) were: Linear Regression, Decision Trees (DT), Naîve Bayes (NB) and Deep Learning (DP). The result of this research shows ML algorithms can identify AD, in early stages, with an 80% accuracy, using a Deep Learning (DL) algorithm.Fil: Diaz, Valeria. Universidad de Palermo. This working paper describes the collection system, and the validation and compilation processes of this instrument at the Central Bank of Chile. It includes the legal framework governing the information requirements, the sources, characterization of data collected, methodology used in the valuation process, and the different breakdowns for publishing, among others. In addition, the paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages of the Chilean system.

Women “Cronistas” in Colonial Latin America

    Get PDF
These archive images bring forth myriad questions about how the past and present are represented. They show the violent intersection of world visions and discursive traditions; translation and survival; dialogue, destruction, and change. It is a storytelling that is individual as well as collective and a space for that which has been expelled or relegated from hegemonic discourse, although this recognition may be limited to a specifi c period, stuck in the quagmire of incessant change. The most critical question that arises here is the following: To whom are we referring when we speak of women cronistas in colonial Latin America? Which types of writing and texts are we indicating? If these texts can be grouped under the broad concept of colonial chronicles , what connections can be made with the predominant colonial literary corpus – a literature directly associated with masculine voices, articulated from the sphere of power and authority? What bonds are established with the actors (soldiers, monks, indigenous nobles, mestizos)? As Julie Greer Johnson has noted, “Because men dominated the writing of both history and literature, the image of women during the colonial period is largely based upon their vision” (157). Nevertheless, Greer Johnson chooses to focus on men’s representation of women. In contrast, this chapter reveals how women represent, write, speak, remember, and affi rm themselves and make requests in the complex sphere of the early Latin American colonial world.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

Changes in P-glycoprotein activity are mediated by the growth of a tumour cell line as multicellular spheroids

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Expression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), the multidrug resistance (MDR) 1 gene product, can lead to multidrug resistance in tumours. However, the physiological role of P-gp in tumours growing as multicellular spheroids is not well understood. Recent evidence suggests that P-gp activity may be modulated by cellular components such as membrane proteins, membrane-anchoring proteins or membrane-lipid composition. Since, multicellular spheroids studies have evidenced alterations in numerous cellular components, including those related to the plasma membrane function, result plausible that some of these changes might modulate P-gp function and be responsible for the acquisition of multicellular drug resistance. In the present study, we asked if a human lung cancer cell line (INER-51) grown as multicellular spheroids can modify the P-gp activity to decrease the levels of doxorubicin (DXR) retained and increase their drug resistance. RESULTS: Our results showed that INER-51 spheroids retain 3-folds lower doxorubicin than the same cells as monolayers however; differences in retention were not observed when the P-gp substrate Rho-123 was used. Interestingly, neither the use of the P-gp-modulating agent cyclosporin-A (Cs-A) nor a decrease in ATP-pools were able to increase DXR retention in the multicellular spheroids. Only the lack of P-gp expression throughout the pharmacological selection of a P-gp negative (P-gp(neg)) mutant clone (PSC-1) derived from INER-51 cells, allow increase of DXR retention in spheroids. CONCLUSION: Thus, multicellular arrangement appears to alter the P-gp activity to maintain lower levels of DXR. However, the non expression of P-gp by cells forming multicellular spheroids has only a minor impact in the resistance to chemotherapeutic agents

    Lossless reshaping of structured light

Structured light concerns the control of light in its spatial degrees of freedom (amplitude, phase and polarization), and has proven instrumental in many applications. The creation of structured light usually involves the conversion of a Gaussian mode to a desired structure in a single step, while the detection is often the reverse process, both fundamentally lossy or imperfect. Here we show how to ideally reshape structured light in a lossless manner in a simple two-step process. We outline the core theoretical arguments, and demonstrate reshaping of arbitrary structured light patterns, in the process highlighting when the technique is applicable and when not, and how best to implement it. This work will be a useful addition to the structured light toolkit, and particularly relevant to those wishing to use the spatial modes of light as a basis in classical and quantum communication
