Adaptive behaviour and paddle tennis: a case study of Down’s syndrome

Adaptive behaviour is one of the key elements to diagnose intellectual disability. In addition, these be-haviors are crucial in order to operate on the daily life. As a population with a high risk of developing a sedentary lifestyle, adapted physical activity programs for people and children with intellectual disability are needed. Therefore the aim of this study is to assess the influence of adapted paddle tennis intervention program on the adaptive behaviour of a child with Down’s syndrome. In a case study of child with Down’s syndrome (male, Caucasian, age = 4.5 years), he participated on a paddle tennis program with a length of 12 weeks. The child’s parents assessed the adaptive behaviour before and after the program through the Adapted Behaviour Scale (ABS-S:2). Obtained data showed that three domains presented a positive increasing. Parents reported that physical development increased from 19 to 23.5, and this in-crease was corroborated by the instructor (post score = 23.8). Moreover, language development increases from 18.5 to 28 (parents). The paddle tennis instructor perceived an increase in speaking abilities after the program. The self-management domain also showed an increase from 8 to 17. The adapted paddle tennis program is suitable for promoting physical activity and for improving adaptive behaviour in children with intellectual disabilities. This research has been subsidized by the Fundación Repsol, through the "Adaptive Behaviour and a Paddle Tennis: a case study of Down´s syndrome" project (Fundación Deporte Joven, Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), Asociación Padelparatodos (ASPADO), UAM

Palabras clave: Resiliencia; entrenadores; pádel; deporte adaptadoIn Sport, most research on resilience is focused on athletes, with quite a low amount on coaches, especially regarding adapted sport. Therefore, the aims of this research are: to describe the resilience characteristics of Adapted paddle coaches by developing specific scales for the sample under study; to establish possible differences in the total resilience levels considering different personal and sport variables; to establish possible relationships between the resilience levels of Adapted Paddle Coaches and the age and experience variables; to compare the resilience levels within the current sample with results in previous studies; and to evaluate reliability levels obtained with the resilience scale used. The sample comprised 111 adapted paddle coaches, to whom two questionnaires were given: a sociodemographic one for adapted paddle coaches (Ruiz, 2004; Ruiz-Barquín, De la Vega, De la Rocha y Batista, 2015a) and the Spanish version of resilience (Ruiz, De la Vega, Poveda, Rosado & Serpa, 2012). The results conclude that the sample group has a large percentage of coaches with high resilience (35.10%), showing higher levels than those in previous studies, and appropriate reliability levels. The absence of significant differences, taking into account the personal and sport variables, and the implications of practices deriving from the results obtained, are discussed in the articl

Tourist destinations and cooperative agreements between airlines

The important links that are formed between tourist destinations and the airline industry are evident in the previous literature. These links are active in both directions. The characteristics and the policies of tourist destinations can affect such relevant aspects as the organization of airline route networks, the inauguration of new routes and their expansion. In this study, it is proposed that the value of a tourist destination and the in- clusion of airports close to the tourist destination on the routes of an airline are also related to whether that airline decides to plan its route networks with its own resources or to complement those resources with assistance from other partner airlines through cooperative alliances, specifically code-share agreements. Taking into ac- count the assumptions of the Resource-Based and the Relational views, the value of a tourist destination can be a relevant factor in the cooperative behaviour of airlines. Moreover, the routes within which the most valuable tourist destinations are embedded can be of different types. It is therefore of interest to know whether the type of route plays a relevant role in the preference for cooperative behaviour among the routes that include tourist destinations. Around 50,000 routes and the most important global tourist destinations were considered to analyse this behaviour. The results showed that the airlines under study preferred to operate the routes that included valuable tourist destinations with their own resources, although this behaviour was more variable when differentiating between types of routesMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO). Potentiation of morphine-induced antinociception and locomotion by citalopram is accompanied by anxiolytic-like effects

Morphine and related opioids are the mainstay of analgesic treatment, especially in patients suffering chronic pain. Besides their antinociceptive effects they may also exhibit anxiolytic-like properties that could contribute to pain relief. The pharmacological manipulation of the serotonergic system may not only modulate pain transmission and processing but also other behavioral effects of opioids. The present study aimed to analyze the effect of the concurrent treatment with citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, on the antinociceptive, locomotor and anxiety-related effects induced by acute and subchronic administration of morphine in mice. Citalopram (15 mg/kg) enhanced the acute antinociceptive effects of morphine when concurrently administered as evidenced by a two-fold increase in the ED50 for the antinociceptive effect of morphine in the hot-plate test. Chronic studies also revealed that concurrent citalopram treatment (15 mg/kg) delayed the development of tolerance to the thermal antinociceptive effects of morphine. Additionally, morphine-induced hyperlocomotion was potentiated by citalopram as assessed in the open-field test and in the spontaneous activity recording in the home cage, a behavioral outcome to which tolerance or desensitization was not developed. Interestingly, chronic administration of both drugs promoted an anxiolytic effect as evidenced by the increased central activity in the open field test. Future investigations on this pharmacological interaction, such as the possible translational research in clinics, might have consequences in future strategies for the therapeutic management of pain. This research was supported by the grant SAF2010-15663 from the Spanish Government (MINECO). A quasi-experimental analysis is performed through the analysis of variance and multivariate analysis of variance methodology. The null hypothesis establishes that the variables of age, sex and difference in online vs. face-to-face support do not influence the results obtained in the development tests in which children participated in during their early childhood. The variables were selected based on what was established by Bowlby (1969) where our findings show that the difference between the online vs. the face-to-face program influenced the results obtained in the SDQ: CAS test.
